Description This is a short comic for a contest over at World of Tanks.[link]

The deadline was brutally short (6 days, and it fell right into the most hectic week of the past two months), so it didn't come out quite as good as I hoped, but still it was fun to do, because I've been toying with the idea of drawing a WOT comic for quite some time and this contest merely gave me the best opportunity to get off my lazy ass and actually do it.

Awesome comic.
This should have won its way into the top 5. Too bad the NA server didn't have a contest like this.

Thank you! Weeeel, it actually did win the contest and I got myself a Dicker Max with the prize money, which proved to be a great decision- I love that thing to bits.

And didn't it? I remember something similar going on on the NA server, about a hundred years ago, back in the days when the world was still young and everybody was riding light tanks after the Beta wipe... XD

Dear god, you speak of ancient Greece of WoT.

Pretty much XD

I do play the game since the open beta, so I remember the wailing and gnashing of teeth of people with tier X tanks after being told that everything is going to be wiped clean and they'll have to start over in leichttractors and whatnot. I never got as far as tier X though, when the wipe came I was still around tier VIII.

Ah, well, no, because the Hummel got the Type 59 and the Su 85 (here armed with the ol'107mm - this was drawn well before the nerf) killed the T49.

Besides, wasn't the Bombardier Achievement introduced in one of the updates that came after I drew this? I'm not sure since I'm a TD player and haven't touched a SPG since I sold my S51, back when the Maus ruled the battlefields and the E100 was merely a gleam in the modeller's eye...

Ah, yes, reminds me of a pretend bombardment we got as part of wargames some years ago... Considering how mere artillery simulators can get two platoons of grown men to burrow like demented gophers, I dread to see what a real barrage does to your nerves...

Could be me as well XD. I used to own one of those and enjoyed it quite a lot. Now I found an even better vehicle for me in the A13 Covenanter. About the same speed and agility, lower armour but better sloping leading to more bounce per buck and while the gun is a bit weaker and less precise the four round magazine gives quite a punch at close range. Best flanker for me, especially since I didn't really get the hang of the ELC AMX and disliked it even though it had a big powerful gun and was a speedy little devil.

Hnm I play just German tanks... XD (Well ok the PZ38tna is actually a Chekis tank... but never mind...

I also love to snipe with it... so the better gun is important for me.

I can so understand the 'derp derp' part. Once I had a guy who, in a random battle, started going against him for no reason. Never met him, didn't do anything to him. When he let go and started acting rational again, I shot him in the rear, just to teach him a lesson!

One of the funniest things I've read in quite some time! Thumbs up!

Oh, there are always people like that in the random battles. I'm not sure shooting them in the back is such a great idea though, since I'm sure they won't learn anything and if anything can get you in trouble for friendly fire.

Faremann [2012-06-12 04:28:39 +0000 UTC]

i already wrote this on teh WoT forums and a little research brought me here

these are REALLY well made especially the style you draw them they somehow seem alive(i don't know how to call this, Bad English :/ ) but not on a over the top cartoonish way just right so they look like tanks

the things you are referring to are sadly really true.
I for my part really hope that isn't the last thing we see from you in this direction because i REALLY REALLY like this especially the way you draw the tanks

i know thats may sounds a little odd but i am REALLY impressed of your work here^^

Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Rest assured, I do intend to make more WOT comics in the same style. In fact I wanted to draw some even before the contest rolled along, and that's probably why I managed to draw this in the allotted time - I had the ideas already in my head, it was only a question of getting them onto the paper...

Of course, I also plan to sneak a little "educational" content in the comics, because, let's face it, there are a lot of WOT players out there that have the tactical sense of a pickled herring and could do with a little instruction. I'm certainly no tactical genius, but I'd like to think I did learn a few things in my 6 years of military service, even though I'm an infantryman and not a tank commander.

But you forgot about the tier 10 who drives to his demise thinking he's invincible.

And LOL at the KV wearing glasses.

Well, this particular game only goes up to tier 8, so there are no tier 10s to depict... The funny thing is that was one of the extra panels that got cut due to the tight deadline - not necessary showing a tier 10, but showing the Lowe behave the same boneheaded way.

It's true isn't it, the KVs do need glasses with all their pitifully short view range they have(which I'm not sure didn't exist on the real vehicle, not just it's WOT incarnation).

Yeah, one of my fears was that, due to the drastic cutting of my script which I had to do to fit the tight deadline imposed by Wargaming, the end product would feel a bit disjointed by the sudden back and forth cutting between places and events, so I tried to cram as much visual humour as I could into each panel.

Actually two if you count the trumpet, but technically one-and-a-half since the trumpet sound in PoP was "tarantara" and I was to lazy to change it once this dawned on me...
In fact both were somewhat accidental - I was listening to the operetta while working (listening to opera while working is something I do and in this case I also listened to the Mikado and Pinafore, since I'm going through a G&S streak at the moment) and when I discovered the panel of the Pz38NA going round the flagpole was a little bare I decided that was exactly the song I'd be humming while doing that in real life, so I worked in...

I didn't know what the reference was until someone on reddit wrote about it. The only song I knew previously from it was the Major General song. After being told what it was, I watched the Tarantara bit all night.

wingsofwrath In reply to 1Wyrmshadow1 [2012-05-22 18:41:36 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, that's probably my favourite bit of the whole operetta. It's so cynical in it's viewpoint (Go you heroes, go end die!) and so over the top at the same time you just can't help but love it...

This also puts me in mind of how, during the first World War, when the British Army still relied on volunteer enlistment, it was commonplace for women to offer white feathers to young men who hadn't yet enlisted as a sign of their perceived cowardice in order to shame them into joining the slaughter...
Of course, this was in fact just a very cleverly choreographed campaign by the British Government to get more volunteers by the magic of peer pressure, but it worked like a charm. [link]

People tend to add lot of shine to the games that they like . They downplay the bad stuff and exaggerate the good . You one the other hand gave the truth , no more no less . I appreciate that .

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

wingsofwrath In reply to BattleHamsterReturns [2012-05-21 17:26:02 +0000 UTC]

Well, again I fail to see why I should be getting praise for behaviour I find normal. Sure, there are people that exaggerate the good points of things they like and don't take criticism lightly, but that doesn't mean I'm something special just because I don't, it's them that should be regarded as twats for doing it...

Besides, with this comic I'm mostly poking fun at some of the WOT players, not the game itself, which I think it's pretty great, especially for something we get to enjoy for free. Not to mention the fact they keep working at it and expanding our gaming pleasure. Sure, it's not always that they do what we would like them to do and sometimes they've taken odd or downright stupid decisions which have enraged people, but as long as they're giving us a free and very enjoyable game I feel it's wrong to gripe about it, because it comes about as selfish and petty.

Same goes for the tight deadline on this contest. Sure, I would have loved a month and I think it would have benefited everybody (Wargaming included) a lot more if they gave it more time, but ultimately, if we chose to participate, then it must mean we agree with the rules of the contest, including the deadline.

BattleHamsterReturns In reply to wingsofwrath [2012-05-21 21:48:31 +0000 UTC]

“ Truth “ as a behavior is anything but normal in many walks of life . Telling the truth in a world of lies is an revolutionary act . I wish i was as optimistic as you in seeing “ truth “ as normal . The “ twats “ you mentioned are the norm , the guys like you whom tell the truth are the exception . Witch is why i tool the time to applaud your gesture

As far as joking about “ some “ players , those “ players “ are in great abundance . I think i get people spamming nonsense in about 90 % of the games i am in . What sort of sick satisfaction do these people get when they spam “ back to base “ while capturing the enemy base is beyond me .
While i agree that the game is great , the reason the Devs are working to expand the game has nothing to do with our happiness . They are adding new stuff to keep us hooked : “ A new tank ? Yes i must play more ! Maybe i should buy gold i simply dont have the time to grind and i really want my IS 7 ! “ : ) . Now of course i am not criticizing them for adding to the game or in wanting to make money . Far from it . However when faced with such glaring problems as the broken Match Maker making tier 6 and 7 nothing more then fodder for countless gold KV 5 and Lowe 's i cant keep from thinking that the Devs go too far .

The contest had a short period because it was not a big thing for them . The seem to have some sort of event about every week or so : destroyer special day / monte-casino victory / Christie suspension tanks / end of ww 2 etc etc . This comic book thing was one such little event , they did not give too much time because they dont expect much to come out of it and have new events planned .

Sorry i am ranting and taking too much of your time from playing : )

wingsofwrath In reply to BattleHamsterReturns [2012-05-22 09:12:33 +0000 UTC]

Ah, therein lies a little problem - lying, or, "twisting the facts in your favour" is just one of those universal thing that bind us together as a species (and in fact it's not only present in our species, great apes have been found to exhibit it as well). In fact I believe behavioural psychologists consider the onset of purposefully telling untruths as form of defence from being punished for their misdeeds, around age 4, as an indication that the child is developing normally. Of course, lies told by children are usually transparent and it is only later, when the kids also develop a moral framework, that they can both tell a convincing tall tale and refrain from doing it under certain circumstances.
Keeping this in mind, I think it's safe to say that pretty much everybody lies, for various reasons, yet I still believe that in our current society it is truth that is prevalent, simply because a convincing lie needs effort producing, while the truth does not and, under most "normal" circumstances, it is far easier to tell.

The problem here was that the type of lies you describe could safely be called "unnecessary lies", because they serve no viable purpose for the teller and are easily discovered to be untruths which, of course, only damages the teller's credibility. That's why I called people to resort to this kind of idiotic tactics "twats".

Now I think you're exaggerating. Yes, those kinds of idiots are present in 90% of the games, but even then, there are only one or two in a team of fifteen, which is a much lower ratio... Of course, because they're loud, it is often them and them alone that catch your eye, same as with internet trolls.

Again, I think you're being much to cynical about this (and since I am a self confessed cynic and skeptic myself that takes some doing), because I know for sure, having friends that work for game development companies, that, while they're understandably self-centred (they're doing this for profit after all) they are also genuinely trying to better their product and appease their fan base. Sure, as you said, it is to keep us "hooked", but I find the idea of introducing a new tank solely to further the grinding time completely ludicrous. A new tank is a new tank, and I've yet to see one in the whole game that is genuinely bad and has no redeeming features. Even the much maligned Amx 40 is worthy of its moniker "mini-Maus" since I once managed to kill two B1s and one Amx 40 at point blank range, without taking any damage despite the slugging match taking place in the open with all of us immobile (I shot the AMX first, and the B1s kept pinging).
Continuing the same line of reasoning, all the tanks they've introduced in the last patch, the T150, Kv1, Kv2, etc. are in my mind "keepers" and I play with them regularly. Also, since since I was a lot further up the line than that it hasn't affected my grinding at all. Then again, I'm not really interested in the top tiers, I think the best games are around tier V-VI, with a lot of interesting and diverse vehicles on the field, and without all that useless waiting around you get further up, when everybody's afraid to move lest they are the first one to snuff it...

Also, you're being unfair again. Sure the Matchmaker does get the occasional failure which will place a loltraktor in a game full of Mouses (mice?) but other than that, I think it's better now than it used to be, and I've been playing this game since the beta, so I've seen quite a bit of it (even though I'm a casual gamer, so I barely amassed 3.5K battles in all this time, because if I'm working on a deadline weeks might pass without me playing a single round). The Kv5 and Lowe aren't that fearsome, and in fact I've killed enough with my tier V tanks (Kv, KV1, Su85) let alone my tier VI (Kv2, IS [old], Kv1s, Su100, T150) to prove that lower tiers are anything but fodder. In fact, compared with "free" tanks of the same tier, the Lowe is decidedly under armoured (but makes up for it with that fearsome gun, and as a dedicated sniper I might enjoy playing with it) while the Kv5 is a slow rolling fortress that, while armed with the famed '107 is decidedly under gunned for it's tier and only good at blasting away lower tiers. Besides, a fast tank such as the AMX 13/75, might kill a Kv5 with only 6 shots at point blank range by shooting the lower back plate, without taking damage by moving away from the slow turning turret...
The only genuinely worrying premium in the game was the Type 59, which was fast, well armed and completely unstoppable in "swarm mode" but since the devs actually listened for a change and took it off from the store you really can't complain the remaining ones are having such a huge impact on game balance. And may I add, this is one case where they decided the well-being of the community trumped the immediate monetary gains of selling a lot of those to everyone involved...

Yeah, you are right about the contests, I failed to look at it from this perspective. I think this is a clear case of "corporate meddling" - someone up high at Wargaming, possibly not very good at their job, ordered his underlings "get some contests going every week" to keep us entertained (the old corporate media myth that "viewers are goldfish" [link] and that we'll lose interest in any contest running longer than one week) and they conformed, regardless of how much sense such a tight deadline makes in this case.
Other contest they are currently running, such as "guess what" actually fit the weekly format well and are quite enjoyable, In my case because I've always liked visual riddles and the free gold is a nice addition...

No need to apologise for ranting, as discernible from my answer I am much more of a manic motor-mouth (motor-keyboard in this case) than you are...
