Description:
The Black Sun’s doctor and a skilled one at that. Unlike most of the principle characters, not much is known about Apache's past. His background, as well as his true age, are a complete mystery to everyone, and Apache himself is quite unwilling to shed any light on it. What is known is that he originally hailed from his homeworld of Aquila, and that he was the healer amongst his tribe, but for one reason or another he left Aquila and journeyed into space. Somewhere along that line, he also learned modern medicine (as practiced by various civilizations) and the workings of various species, thus expanding his field of medical knowledge tremendously. Any of this could have occurred within the last hundred years or so, as Aquilans have great lifespans that can go up to multiple centuries.
During his travels through the galaxy, Apache would meet up with a young but aspiring pirate named Morganna Flint, who upon seeing his skill as a doctor, would take him on within her crew. The Aquilan would be one of the few to remain at Morganna's side throughout her growth as a pirate, even when she had risen to the status as the Lady of the newly established Gold Dragon Clan. In turn, Morganna put her full trust into Apache as her doctor as her friend, to the point that she would select him to deliver Jon, and later Alex, upon their respective births. From there, Apache would become something of an uncle figure to the two children, who would grow close to the Aquilan in spite of his hard edged personality and seeming lack of tolerance for "featherless infantile creatures". However, upon Morganna's death and the destruction of the Gold Dragon Clan, Apache would again take to wandering the stars, losing track of the Flint Brothers for years.
For a time, Apache would attempt to establish himself as a legitimate physician, but would fail to gain legal backing for this endeavor. In place of that agenda, he would set up an underworld practice, in which he would hire himself out to beings who could not afford proper medical care legitimately (i.e. criminal types and hard luck cases). Apache would sustain himself from this alone, holding a steady stream of patients and establishing himself as an underground community figure of sorts. Unfortunately however, his past connection to Morganna would catch up to him, in the form of the Imperials, upon learning of his survival, placing a bounty on his head. After narrowly evading one such group of bounty hunters, Apache would find refuge under Captain "Stonebone" Golem, the former raider commander of Morganna's flagship Morgan le Fey, now captain of the battlecruiser Megalith and leader of the Stonebone Pirates. It would be in this capacity that Apache would once again encounter Jon and Alex, who often worked alongside Golem on their "jobs".
When Jon and Alex liberated the U-7501, they both agreed that Apache was the only being in the universe they would have as the ship's doctor. Even so, it would take much convincing on the Flints' part, as well as Golem's, to pry the stubborn Aquilan from his place on the Megalith and onto the umbra. Eventually however, Apache would decide to join the newly christened Flint Pirates and claim his place in the Black Sun's sickbay, where he has remained since.
In terms of personality, Apache is very straight forward and cantankerous, which strangely makes him right at home with the Black Sun crew. He is also very cynical, possessing an old man's dry wit, downbeat attitude and lifetime of experience, the latter of which allows him to adjust to any situation, no matter how dire. Indeed, very few things ever surprise Apache any more, and even those that do he takes in stride. Above all else however, he takes his profession very seriously, as he'll treat anything from a rash to a broken leg as if it were a semi-critical case (depending on the circumstances of course), yet is more than capable of talking (or taking, as he oft prefers) down his patients, even the murderous kind, should they prove hostile. This of course, makes him come across as domineering, but he does keep good care of the crew all the same, so nobody really complains.
Coming from a "primitive" planet and inheriting the medical knowledge and traditions of his people, Apache is an extraordinary healer that, like most "medicine birds", can identify ailments, whether internal or external, by eyesight alone. Beside this, he is also a skilled herbalist, possessing encyclopedia-like knowledge for various herbs and their effects on equally various species. For this purpose, he keeps a small "garden" area on the Black Sun for growing the assorted plants he requires, as well as a "lab" area in sickbay for mixing the different compounds together. Though several of his patients are fearful of these practices, these herbal supplements have proven to be as effective, if not more so, at relieving pain and healing as any sort of "legitimate" medicine. Even so, Apache is more than capable of using outside types of medicine when push comes to shove.
