First, you select it and make sure that in Select, Transparent Selection is on.
In color two, make sure that the color you want to make gradiented is there.
Copy and paste he part with hair into a gradient of the colors.
Copy the newly gradiented hair onto the original picture.

When I was expirimenting with gradients I found that if you divide the canvas up to that where one color ends another begins on the same pixel you get a much smoother transition. Great tutorial anyway!
