Lately there have been Fluttermac fans bashing Cheerilee due to her part in the upcoming Hearts and Hooves episode, mostly saying Fluttershy belongs with Big Macintosh.What?
Fluttershy and Big Macintosh have never shared one word with each other, yet people treat it like it's canon.
So far, all they've done is stand next to each other in several scenes in The Last Roundup.
In fact, you know which Mac pairing is the closest to being canon? Twimac.
In Season 1, Twilight was the only member of the Mane 6, aside from Applejack, who knew Big Mac existed (being introduced to him in Friendship is Magic Part 1 and talking about him with AJ in Applebuck Season). In Season 2, several indications that hint at Twimac have been shown to us (Big Mac licking Twilight in Return of Harmony Part 2 and Big Mac running off with Smarty Pants after the spell was lifted in Lesson Zero). But the biggest hint of all is that THEY ACTUALLY INTERACTED WITH EACH OTHER which is more than can be said for Fluttershy!
In fact, I don't really understand why Fluttermac is so popular in the first place! Why? Because she's the helpless damsel and he's the big, strong tough guy? Aren't we all a little sick of cliched pairings?

Your absolutely right. Twimac is the most 'canon' pairing so far. I think, however, in order to understand the fan's shipping, you'll have to understand that it's 'fanon'. That means, as far as the fans are concerned, it's official.
I'm not saying it makes sense, but it may help you understand the fans a little better.
I was a big fluttermac fan just because it looked cute. Period. Fluttershy was cute and shy, and it's funny how the two of them would be so shy around each other. I for one figured it'd never happen. I'm more of a Twimac enthusiast now.

Cheerimac: They were only messing with the CMC at the end (the wink) plus if they did end up together, then the lesson the CMC learned was pointless.
Sparity: Spike is too young for Rarity, plus you know how crushes usually turn out. Also, you know he just likes her because she's hot.

Of course it's not canon! That's not the way fan pairings work. This pairing is so popular because people think the two are cute together. I don't think of Fluttershy as a damsel in distress, as she has shown that she can take care of herself. She just doesn't go into action until her friends or any animals are in danger. I even think she's a secret black belt! I mean, did you see how she handled that bear?! Anyway, they're both shown to be quiet, gentle characters, and now my train of thought has been derailed.
We're not sick of cliched pairings.
I don't bash on Cheerilee just because of one creepy episode.
I also don't bash on any other pairings I don't support.
I'm going back to my FlutterMac search now.

What I find most ironic about the complainers is... (SPOILER!)
CheerileeXMac doesn't become canon at the end anyways. (But some still interpritate then ending that way, even though Cheer' & Mac were just teasing the CMC.)
They have no reason to complain. They can still imagine Big Mac & Fluttershy together all they want.
I can't help, but wonder if the episode's "moral" was partially aimed at overly-obsessive 'shipper fans.

LOL I thought that too.."don't force 2 ponies to be together". I think some fans really need to listen to this advice! Sure,I ship ponies (and even have a fan group for a pair I especially like), But I wouldn't call myself "obsessive". If someone disagrees with me over something like that,I'll respect their opinion. I'm not going to start a fight over who a character should end up with.

Fan-'shipping is fine, but some people get to passionate about their prefered pairings. (Especially the Sonic-fans always fighting over wich girl Sonic should be with, and such.)

I agree one hundred percent. Just because you like FlutterMac doesn't mean you should hate on Cheerilee. I really doubt any pairing in MLP is OFFICIALLY going to happen, so people really shouldn't make such a big deal out of it. They're only going to be disappointed.

I don't give a shit that Fluttermac isn't cannon. I ship it because it's cute and it makes sense to me. Yes, I'm not stupid. I know it isn't cannon. So what? How boring would this fandom be if we only drew things that are cannon?

I must agree here. My favourite pairing is Twilestia (and if anyone finds that creepy I apologise) But don't to see it made canon! I want the writers to tell their own stories. There is a reason why they are writing the show and not us.
I really liked the new episode because I got to see more of Cheeriee (one of my favourite minor characters) but Fluttershy is still my favourite pony. Shipping is fun, but let's not get carried away. it's only fanon. And I would hope that ultimately the show is more important (or at least as important).

Welcome to fan-ships, dude. You'll get the people who stick to canon stuff, and those that, for whatever reason, go into orbit if their own little fantasies aren't rectified.
I think an easier way to explain Fluttermac is the simple fact that both ponies are very gentle and shy. That's the only explanation I can think of. ^^

I'm not ready to freak out about my ship (yes, FlutterMac) being out the window yet just because Big mac is going to be given what's doubtlessly going to be a one-episode love interest. Besides which, the episode summary says that the CMC make Big Mac and Cherilee fall in love, and then come to regret it. And on top of all that, on the off chance Big Mac and Cherilee do become canon, no one said the FlutterMac shippers can't still enjoy their ship.
Tl;dr version: Everybody relax and enjoy the zany antics.

Episode has already leaked. It's more than implied that Mac and Cheerilee are heading towards a relationship.

I saw it this morning, but I didn't think they were headed toward a relationship. The wink at the end seemed more like, "Lol, let's pull one over on the kids." Given that Status Quo is God, for syndication purposes, I don't see Big Mac x Cheerilee going anywhere any time soon.

Although the general consensus from the community is it was deliberately written in an open ended manner for writing convenience because Hasbro wants little to no continuity between S2 episodes.
(It's also why Spike having a crush on Rarity can be canon, but Rarity's feelings toward Spike must remain ambiguous. A mane 6 romance just wouldn't fit the show's non-serial nature.)
Not to mention, while they were playing with the CMC at the end, it's still likely that they were genuinely interested in eachother at that point, and their wink could also be flirtatious as well as joking.

All of that makes senseβthe debate and the open-ended nature of the script, especially the latter. As I recall, Lauren Faust wanted the series to have multi-episode arcs, but Hasbro put the nix on it so they could run reruns in any given order.

I love Big Macintosh and I think Fluttermac is a cute little ship, however I never found it too engaging. Recently I've started fancying Rainbow Dash x Big Mac but in the end, I love the Big Red Stallion. I admit a part of me wants to see CheeriMac be canon, however with the CMC's reputation of failing and being covered in tree sap, I can't help but think that Cheerilee and Big Mac both end up going home and take a cold shower... (and Big Mac later finding out he's pregnant.)

You bring up really good points, especially about Fluttermac being a bit cliche. I only really consider myself a casual Fluttermac shipper as I've only done two drawings of them together, but I'm pretty much open to any other pairings. I'm also pretty excited for 'Hearts and Hooves Day.'

The show writers want to keep pairings to a minimum.
The only pairings that are canon are:
Cadance + Shining Armor
Twilight + Flash Sentry
Cheerilee + Big Mac (probably)

Even semi-canon is arguable. The main thing with Heartstrings/Lyra is the toy's art doesn't match Lyra. She's literally a Twilight Sparkle recolor. And some of us are iffy on just saying "cutie mark = same character" when its been shown some ponies will have the same or similar marks as others.
But thats another discussion. Shippers are crazy. Though at this point, anti-Fluttermacs are starting to become just as obnoxious as the initial Fluttermacs.
