If I understand correctly the rumour that Rainbow is a lesbian originated with a 'Ms Magazine' article trying to attack the show. So I snigger when some brony make jokes about her sexuality. I think to myself 'Your indulging in a sentiment created to hurt the show"
But in truth I feel in fact if for some it makes them like Rainbow Dash more it's not a bad thing. and Sometimes I think that the show's writers could use this rumour to tell a very good story about how there is nothing wrong with homosexuality, if they had the courage (and if Hasbro would let them).
As for Rule 34. well nearly all the cast are female and rule 34 has made all the main six lesbians at some point, but itβs thanks to Ms that it has rubbed of on Rainbow
if they get to introduce male love interests (I'm betting on somewhere around season four or five)
the "lesbianiseation" will die down slightly.
Honestly I don't feel it matters much because even if she is a lesbian looking at the canon (BACK FANFIC! BACK I SAY!) it seem to me that she isn't gay for any of the other main six. So it doesnβt change who she is at heart. A good and loyal friend who sometimes doesnβt think deeply enough for her own good

However it is wrong to assume that just because you want to see a character straight means we all should. You are exactly right that these charries aren't designed with sexuality in mind. Thusly you could see Rainbow as a straight girl, and I could see her has a lesbian and we'd both technaically be correct. Until there is clear proof that makes it a certain way there's no barring either example.

It's obvious that there is sexualities in MLP by both the heterosexual crushes and the standing parent relationships. And I find the notion that we should only present the most 'commonly accepted' relationship types to kids to be short-sighted and reinforces bad behavior. This doesn't mean that I think any of the 'mane' six to be lesbian, but I do think it would be perfectly acceptable to have, say, same-sex parents or not scorning MLP fans from creating same-sex OCs.
Or, perhaps acknowledge that Steven Magnet is gay.

MEH. I disagree with people arbitrarily DECIDING what orientation Dash is, whether it's hetero, lesbian, bi, or veggie-philiac. They never say ONE TIME in the show what her orientation is (because it's a children's show, and that would be a bit awkward) so really, it's open to interpretation. I personally ship her with AJ, but I don't froth at the mouth when people say that she would look good with a male character.
tl;dr: They never defined Dash's sexuality, so no one is necessarily "wrong".
