I had the whole collection book of these, they didn't really freak me out at the time but... I still felt a little bit shaken by the book even if I didn't know why.

BTW, something I never quite understood is why the cat turned into a dog in the end. Perhaps it was a result of the experiment done to him?

Well, technically it was a cat named Tigger in one his past lives.
In the book, Garfield is actually cowering under a blanket when he introduces this strip.

It's pretty creepy and the art style is also realistic, so it adds to the overall feel of the strip.
