FULL VIEW/DOWNLOAD FOR THE BEST RESULTS.Phew, there's a huge file!
fshshak. Darn. I should really remake this someday. D8
When I read this - even though I wrote it -, I get a headache halfway. Take a break in between to just test things out; it helps! ;D
A small tutorial for the male torso can be found here: [link]
A tutorial for hands can be found here: [link]
Again a tutorial done for , so that is to whom the left drawing belongs. But honestly. This way, she wil not improve. Ever. She refuses to do the practise, draws only from anime/bases, and I actually cared. That was stupid of me.
Dears, don't make her mistake. Don't make ugly drawings all your life just because real practise is dull. BE someone, live: everyone can improve, if they have the WILL for it. The things Crystal appears to lack. Very.
All I did was note down the things that are helpful. Things I was taught, things I found out. I'm young, yes. But I've literally been drawing since the day I could hold a pencil and put lines on paper with it. I'm... not as inexperienced as everyone foolishly thinks of fresh seventeen-year-olds. ;___;
If this tutorial confuses you, or if it all gives you a headache, take a five minute break and then read things through again. Check them for yourself in the mirror or from a picture, maybe discover something more. If you're uncertain of what you can or cannot do, practise is the only resolve: and even when you feel that you're a good artist, when you feel that you're fine like this, don't. Accept that we all suck and need to improve, at all times.
I suck. I suck so much that I've got no right to put this tutorial up. And I'm prepared to do something about that.
Make sure that you are, too! ;D
Now share your thoughts and questions in a comment if you have any; what you knew of this list, what you didn't know, or even request constructive critique. You could then get that critique from anyone who'd like to, but if you'd expect them from me, there's no use in linking things just because you want to hear the words βThat's not bad, that's great; you're the best living being around!β
Practise your hearts out, dears!
Misspelled "bottom" by "bottem". Lolwhut? So tired. ;__;

What kind of pencil was used to draw the more detailed male?
What kind would you recommend when sketching?
By the way this is a lovely tutorial. I works well. <3

I prefer 4B pencils - although I'm not sure it that's what it's called where you live. Basically it's just a rather soft kind of graphite pencil. (Happens to be of the "Staedtler" brand, though that probably doesn't matter, it's just fairly cheap ;D )
And as for recommended pencils to sketch with, I'd say that depends on how you like to draw. Some people prefer a lighter/harder pencil, as it doesn't wear out as quickly since it doesn't need sharpening as much. But I like the softer ones: you don't have to press them down too hard to get a smoother line. Though I press them down so hard the shot I work on for a while (in animation) leaves an imprint on the lightbox.

Thank you
Ghaha, yes, I suppose there's always those too stubborn to learn, in everything. ;D
My boyfriend for one had issues with the stove today. I told him he had to twist the knob to the right to make the flame smaller, alas, my comments annoyed him hence he didn't do it. Ended up with burned butter. It's... one way to learn, from your mistakes.

Well, some guys simply prefer the hard way of learning something..I suppose your boyfriend is also one of them

Thanks for making this tutorial! The tips were really helpful :3
I can draw the face parts seperately, but it always looks a tad funny when I put the whole head together ><"
It's always nice to see someone my age to be interested in realism :'D -highfives-

Ahh yes, proportions can be difficult Especially drawing two eyes more or less the same is a pain.
Thank you very much, I'm glad it helped you!

Brilliant! you emphasise the key point of drawing, looking at the subject. I read a very interesting article on the subject some time ago (can't remember where). It said that rather than drawing what we see, we draw "symbols" for things like children do, like for a house we draw a square front for a house, with a triangle roof and rectangle windows and a door, but it doesn't look like a house, it's just a symbol.
If we actually look at our work critically we can see these lazy symbols that creep into pictures through lack of observation. The advice given to help with this was to draw using negative space, or copy from a picture turned upside-down to avoid processing the image and replacing parts of it with these symbols. A brilliant example of this is the "spiky oval" eye, it's the symbol for eye that we've been drawing since we first learned to draw, and now a lot of us need to re-learn and accept that these symbolic shapes aren't acceptable if we want realistic art to happen.
I invite everyone to look up the Renaissance and what it meant for art. It was the transition from symbolic hieroglyphic-style drawings like those found in old tapestries to the brilliantly anatomically correct works of da Vinci. It seems that within us, we each need to relearn and retrace this artistic Renaissance.
Sorry for hijacking, great tut

That's very interesting indeed! I don't think we all have to try and make nothing but realistic works anymore, but yes: art could use a new form of renaissance here. And if everyone on deviantart would have a critical eye on their own works, this network would become so much better, without all the excuses of "but it's my style!" and "it's manga/anime/cartoony hence I don't need a base of realism".

o.o I love you. Seriously. Drawing human faces, especially realistically, is one of those things I never thought I could do. But this tutorial has helped SO MUCH. Especially the beginning, when you talked about spacing! It's way easier to get things lined up, knowing approximate distances.
Again, much love <3

Oh, I'm glad to hear that; thank you! <3 It's indeed a lot more logical when you know the basic proportions, they're great things to keep to in most cases. ;D

You know, you would make a spectacular art teacher. Your tutorials are always so helpful.
This one is definitely very useful. While I'm quite good at drawing profiles, I always have a hard time drawing portraits. I can never figure out what I'm doing wrong and all the instructors I've had are completely useless at helping. I definitely appreciate this. <3

Oh, that's really sweet; yet all I share is what I've been taught once, and what they've been taught before, and the ones before them were taught, and so on. Of course there's a different way of putting things, and some different ideas after a bunch of practise like with anyone, but overall I don't do much but... help a little. I won't be making the drawings for those that use this tutorial, and they still might misinterpret this.
Ahaha, yes, some teachers are a bit... unclear with their sayings. But overall that's when they lack the skill of their own. Also I don't get why most of my teachers speak of how difficult it is to draw profiles. But, yes, even when we think it's done right and is easier, we could be wrong β and I should've added this in the tutorial itself. D8 On a face in profile, everything placed within the face is smaller. When you draw the eyes, draw them again, because there's a big chance that they're too big anyway. ;__; Same goes for the mouth; it usually doesn't go far. But things like a nose and ear are far easier in that position, yes! ;D
...*yabbayabbayabba *. D8

Yeah well, nobody's perfect. I think for not being an adult having gone through a teaching school, you teach others very well. I mean, not everyone is going to get it, but I think that a majority of people will be helped by this tutorial. You explain in a way that's easy to understand. ^^
Ohyeah, I agree. I think the first few times you draw a profile, it's difficult. But once you get it once, it's not hard at all.
I agree with the eye thing. xD I always draw the eye too big and have to do it again.

Why can't my art teacher should my class these things? I'm gonna sign up for more than 'basic' next year, that's for sure.
It's taken years for me to hon my style (I should find some old drawings for a before 'n' after type deal) and I'm still not happy with it. You're right; even the best can improve. Cheers~. :'D

okay, I just spent like an hour reading this. I didn't read completely everything, but I read enough to understand it better... do you forgive me now? I promise I will try it. I will do my best to improve. And if that happens...will you please get rid of that comment in the artist description that claims I can't improve? I'm not asking you to do that right away, just if I happen to improve someday.

It's not that YOU as a person can't improve. It's that your current attitude and your current view on things can't let you. There are all sorts of closed minds, dear.

I really can't believe Crystal gave you all that crap.
This is a really lovely tutorial. (As well as the one on the body that you made.)
I saw some very useful tips that I hadn't thought about before here. I saved this to my computer for later use. ;D
I specifically liked the tips about the lips. (Those are my weak point.)
Just know that you're not wasting your time, even if the person it was intended for doesn't use it.
But yeah, great tutorial. <3

I guess it's easy to make me seem like the bad guy when she leaves the other part of the story out.
And that's kind of you dear, thank you! It's just... sad that she wouldn't. I'm not saying that this thing is THE base for her to hold on to in practise, but I did try to make some of the things I know understandable. Just as a little help. But I guess reading really is a big effort?
