If anyone knows how to add preview images, please, tell me. Apparantly that's only for gif-images, but, this is just too huge.

A tutorial for facial anatomy can be found here: [link]
A tutorial for hands can be found here: [link]

Sorry, I rushed on the sketches. D8 Lack of time and exams and a freaking grahpic novel to finish make this a bit difficult.

This one is for , because she's having a hard time with anatomy – at this point the male torso. I sent her a link to a stock photo which I found randomly on google, and she made the left version out of it. I then drew it as well since I'd never add a picture here without permission. Also that made it easier to see and understand certain aspects.

I would link to that reference picture here on dA, but, I haven't seen it around. If you have, do tell me so that I can add the link here!

I hope that this helps you out a bit – if it doesn't, I really don't know what I can do anymore... D8

Anyone else is of course free to... learn from this, if it helps. Yet drawing from the added sketches is a bad idea: after all, you can't trust that I did it 100% right. Look up reference for yourself, or model for yourself: or ask someone else to model for you. Anatomy is difficult, and practise from good examples is the ONLY way to get it right. There are no special tricks for it no matter how much you want to. D8

YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO STEAL THE DISPLAYED WORKS WITHIN THIS. All sketches aside of the one that I've clearly mentioned is Crystal's belong to me, and you may NEVER reupload them without my WRITTEN permission.
I'm pretty sure you're not allowed to use Crystal's work either. So, grow up and don't. ;D

I'm willing to make more like this, or make this one a bit better if anyone wants me to. BUT. Then you must literally nicely say so in a COMMENT, because I simply can't smell whether you want for me to do anything specific or not.

Stock photography of male anatomy is something I can't do. Stock photography of female anatomy is something I won't do. Yes, I'd be my own model. But it'd be considered child porn if I were to put it up. (Yes, 16 year olds are children, too. We may be old enough to drink here and drive in America, but legally, we might just as well be 12. ;D )

Mistake in text next to third sketch: chest plates are not even, closer to each other. (I skipped the comma... )
Also "broud" should obviously be "broad", and for some reason I didn't make that mistake when I used the word elsewhere.

Now thatΒ΄s not very nice.

...Then again leaving it on here like this isnΒ΄t particulary nice either. But it embodies a lot of the most common mistakes people tend to make.

Thanks so much for this tutorial! I LOVE YOU!!

i love this~! very helpful!

what should i do if the person of intrest/model isnt as muscularly defined? hes more what you would call "skinny-fat" aka little to no muscle definition, and has a bit more effeminate shape than what youve shown here. any recommendations??? it would help alot, thanks(ive looked for examples and theres NONE that look right, or if they are, theyre too small to see)

Xannijn In reply to Catbread-Rainbows [2011-07-25 09:28:37 +0000 UTC]

Now that's a rather good question: I must admit that I've usually been lucky on model-matters. In school we get a great variation in models - from super-muscled to super-fat, and both are equally amusing to draw ;D - and the boyfriends I've semi-forced to model were usually pretty muscled as well. Yet honestly, if your preferred model isn't the bodyshape you're looking for, you'd be best off looking for a different model for the time being - which is a whole lot easier to say than to do. D:

The easiest solution would be to work with the small pictures anyway. Or simply keep on looking, and eventually you'll find some larger files that could help you out. There's a huge source of free stock sites out there: they will ask for you to pay for their pictures if you want it in full size (like say 3000 on 4000, which would be awesome quality ), but you can just as well work with the preview image. Since you're not using them for photomanipulation the watermark is of no issue at all: and the average file size is just about 300x400, which is small indeed, but surely not so small that it cannot be worked with. ;D

yet in the end, if you're just looking for basic practise on proportions and basic anatomy, just about any skinny-fat model will do. ;D

i think you misunderstood what i meant. i dont like the hunkier guys, i WANT to draw the more skinny fat ones. I think the more muscled defines are just too "perfect" for what i want. I was asking for tipe on how to make the musles less defined but be able to tell that its a man, not a woman youre looking at. sorry i wasnt very precise with my question. ^ ^'

yes thats some very good advice thank you so much for the help~

Oohh, I see, then sorry for the misplaced rant! If you don't want your man to look like a woman, it's fairly simple: just work with strong/harsher lining, even if - for example - you'd be drawing a soft chubby man. You can use more "constructive" lining for curved lines you might prefer to be gentle with.

Other than that: adding a penis/not adding breasts helps as well ;D Surely the chubbier man tends to have a pair of "breasts" of his own, but even if you'd add those you'll see that they're nothing like woman's breasts.

your tutorial was incredibly helpful when I was drawing a muscled male torso from 3/4 view. Sure, it was 3/4 in the OTHER direction from that one you drew at the bottom there, but still it helped a HUGE deal while trying to figure out how exactly the abs lined up to the angle of his torso. Thank you so, so much!

Xannijn In reply to Artsy-Seachel [2010-12-27 21:59:46 +0000 UTC]

Aww tsssh, failing is relative. ;D

But of course, if you want it anatomically correct, the best thing you can do is find reference or a victim/model, and practise on and on from those.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Artsy-Seachel In reply to Xannijn [2011-01-13 00:10:08 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I guess that's probably the best idea. I've just never really seen the male torso in detail or anything so... O_O

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Xannijn In reply to Artsy-Seachel [2011-01-13 08:58:31 +0000 UTC]

So, what? Then DO that. It's just a torso; I assume you're mature enough not to giggle over something so everyday. ;D

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Artsy-Seachel In reply to Xannijn [2011-01-14 19:24:47 +0000 UTC]

Well it's not that I would giggle over it, I'm just really shy. Also, the thought of stumbling upon something I'd rather not see makes me a little nervous. I have a book about figure drawing, but I think it's only the female figure.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Xannijn In reply to Artsy-Seachel [2011-01-14 21:36:07 +0000 UTC]

Ahh, well, I used to be quite shy as well. And I'm sure it's got a lot to do with age as well. Now I can't shut my yapper for any good. When I was, say, 13/14 I wouldn't go off looking for nude reference. Even at 15 I prefered not to see any actual genitials. But, like anything else, you get used to it surprisingly quickly. You also don't SEE the nude model as a naked man: it's a vase. Just another vase you've got to draw. ;D
...frankly, now all I can think of when I see the models from college is "Shit, I've got sketching homework to finish".

Tell you what: just look up pictures with search terms such as "Shirtless man", or "Man underwear" and such, and you're pretty certain not to find anything you might not want to see. ;D

male anatomy is so frustrating. In SO many ways. I'm entirely self taught and male anatomy is one of the things I struggle with immensely. Thank you for this tutorial. It's been helpful indeed!

I do have a question, though. Would you mind doing a tutorial on hands? I have a few issues with hands, too.

A tutorial on hands? Well... I might. There's already some tutorials on hands out there, but they're often so cartoony or are just a series of drawings without much text. I might try to make one a bit similar to this.

Thank you sooooo much! I've looked for other tutorials, but yeah, they are rather cartoony. And I don't mind that, but I'm trying to make my art more realistic. So... therin lies the problem. Again, thank you!
