Another multi-POD timeline. This one has in-depth records and internet, however, so we were able to gather a good deal of information on it. It certainly has its ups and downs in comparison to OTL. For instance, FDR's death means there was no New Deal, and poverty is still a major issue for the US; but that general poverty means that the Civil Rights movement was earlier, faster, and more peaceful. And a slight alteration in Hilter's childhood and early life means no Holocaust, but less moral motivation for the Allies, a larger troop pool and a lack of camps to build and fund for the Germans means that the Nazis win World War II. Fascism exists, but is more liberalized. Proper Communism exists, but is democratic. Ghandi was still assassinated, but never went back to India, instead creating a racially equal and free South Africa by the late 1930s. On balance, this TL is worth further investigation.
After the deaths of both FDR and Herbert Hoover over the course of the election year, the rise of Joe France was seen as seemingly out of nowhere. Barely winning the election, President France would make attempts to alleviate the Great Depression, but never managed to drag the Union out of the muck. Fearful of destroying the fragile peace that had fallen across the nation after the Great Bread Riots of 1932, President France would institute isolationist policies, proclaiming that America needed to focus on its own welfare above anything else. While not entirely successful, the stability and lack of other prominent options aside from fringe groups inspired by the late Huey Long led to France's second term, and another four years of 'Internal Development'.
In Europe, the rise of the National Socialist German Workers' Party in Germany made many turn to the once crumbling nation in awe. Proclaiming a "Germany for Germans", the party rose on propaganda of nativism, revanchism, militarism, and staunch opposition of 'bourgeois bankers'. While some party members would take this last point to the degree of antisemitism (as, according to them, the majority of banks were owned by Jews), after the death of party officials Goebbels and Hess by communist assassins, this began to die out, and when future Fuhrer Adolf Hitler was asked about their stances, he responded, "The first girl I ever loved was a Jew. My favourite teacher in Vienna, before a lack of funds made me leave art school, was Jew. Never have I met German Jew who was not just that; a German Jew." This quote and subsequent alterations would be the basis for the majority of recruitment drives in minority regions within the NSR. of Germany. In contrast, rumors of ethnic cleansing for "national security" by the French dealt blows to the Allied war effort.
After establishing the National Socialist Republic of Germany, the Germans would begin "peaceful" annexation of surrounding regions, but always they looked towards reclaiming all of Germany by force. When the French--having been taken control of by their own homegrown fascist movement--made a Pact of Non-Aggression with the USSR, the world knew what was coming. The Soviet invasion of Poland and Ostprussen and the French invasion of the Rhine were coordinated together, and the Germans were quick to respond in repelling these forces. As the Soviets collapsed due to infighting after the death of Joseph Stalin by food poisoning, the Germans gained the opportunity they had been waiting for. Together with their Dutch allies, they began swarming into Poland and France, the Nazi war machine quick to consolidate claims, their Italian allies proving invaluable in crippling Mediterranean supply lines.
As the Soviets reformed, after nearly a decade of civil war, into the far more democratic Brotherhood of Man, they would not gain any European land until their annexation of Turkey, followed by the great Balkan War, or the War of Slavic Unity, in which the Brotherhood proved capable of handling the Italians after the Germans showed little interest in defending "slavic degenerates" who had "shamefully refused" to assist in the "Glorious War". Making an uneasy alliance with Japan after the latter's somewhat successful conquest of coastal China, the two powers would eventually slay the Chinese Dragon, partitioning the land between them. However, territorial disputes and the pressure of the Germans, who already had an alliance with the Japanese, eventually saw the two distance themselves.
The British, remaining neutral, did watch with unease as the Germans exploded across the continent. Although they supported the rebel takeover of the 'Free French' puppet state based in Vichy, the United Kingdom realized that their influence in Europe was ending, instead deciding to further influence their Dominions and allies across the world. This decision allowed them to become the most powerful economy and primary negotiator in the world. Over time this put them at odds with the Germans, creating a Cold War as the rest of the non-fascist nations turned to Britain for leadership, the still weak United States having closed itself off.
Fastforward to the year 2015, and we see the US, considered a 'second world' or 'second rate' country, finally deciding to cave into the hegemonic soft power of the British, officially joining the Commonwealth of Nations, a political alliance and economic union. Further, the breakaway state of the Second Texan Republic proves a fine example of the growing influence of Mexico, not just in the prosperous region of Central America, but on a global scale. This is addition to Brotherhood control of the Socialist State of California, and German control of the Dixie Federation. The Quebecois continue their bloody war of independence, backed by the revanchist Republic of Cascadia, who is trying to reclaim the land they lost to the Canadians in the British Military Intervention in Columbia, also known as Operation Temperate Storm. Prior to this, the Columbians had seceded and joined with the Free State of Washington, but neither areas had ever been recognized since their founding the 1960s, and as such the situation is yet to be officially recognized as a war.
Tensions are on the rise everywhere; from the funding of Anti-British terrorists in Africa by the rebel groups in the Belgian Congo, to troop counts being risen along the Parisian Wall, to border skirmishes between North and South Spain, and further threats by the virulent Hindustan to peaceful Islamistan, no one feels safe. However, world leaders have decided to meet in the neutral Republic of Hedjaz, where a so called "Mecca Accords" are being drafted to begin the prohibition of the use of nuclear weapons in warfare between signatories. While this does allow for warfare to be considered viable again, many hope for the talks to succeed, if only to ensure that whatever wars occur actually have survivors.
