Description
Here it is, like I promised! My first tutorial. (I don't count the graphite pencil portrait one cause it's not good and it's not even finished. I'll scrap it -_-)Anyway, this tutorial shows how I drew this: [link]
The stock image used as a reference: [link] by ~akai-hinoiri
It's just the way I did it, it doesn't mean it's the best way but a lot of people were interested in seeing a tutorial about it so I decided to make it.
This is also a contest entry for #Traditional-Artists 's tutorial contest
I just hope I didn't write too much, but there are also a lot of pictures. Sorry if some of them aren't the best quality, I couldn't scan the drawing all the time. My scanner is A4 and the drawing is around A3 so it would take a lot of time to stitch the parts together all the time.
At first I thought about making the background of the tutorial white with some bubble brushes in the background but then I figured using the dA color scheme would suit it better
I hope you'll find it useful and please ask if you have any question!
P.S. The title wouldn't fit otherwise so I had to type it without spaces.
Edit: My tutorial has been translated to Russian. You can check it out here: [link] You need to register to be able to see it, but if you are Russian you should really do it, it's a great forum with lots of helpful stuff.
Edit 2: The translation to Russian can also be found here: [link] And you don't need a registration for this one.

Great tutorial, it helped me starting to figure out how to do coloured portraits cause I want to start doing that soon
Btw - for stitching together A4 scans of A3 pictures I highly recommend Microsoft ICE - it's free and brings phantastic results

I'm glad you find it helpful It's easy to stitch it in PS, I was just too lazy to do it for this one XD I think it looks better like this, because I only needed closeups anyway, and I couldn't scan the pencils XD

Thank you so much for posting this tutorial. I learned a lot from it. I tried it this morning and feel like I improved with the face, but I can see what you mean about focusing on the lines for the hair - I got lazy with part of it and that part doesn't look as good. Anyway, thank you again, this tutorial is so helpful!

Very nice picture!
After seing your original picture, I just loved how the picture looked so grainy. I think that's a great technique and gives a lovely impression. So I went to check out your tutorial- and it's indeed a nice one, thanks! But one question;which water color pencils gave of this grainy-feeling? The kohl-noor or the mondeluz ones?
Thanks in advance!

I'm glad you like the tutorial That's one brand, Koh-I-Noor Modeluz. Koh-I-Noor is the brand, and Mondeluz is just the name of that particular set. I think you can get the same result with any watercolor pencils, because the only thing that matters is for them to be a bit softer than the regular pencils. And the paper shouldn't be to flat, like the printing paper, just go with a soft texture.

I don't think my 48 color set can do this...or can it? Do you have any color pencil brand suggestions that you found useful? Because I'm using Faber Castell now but I'm expanding my knowledge on other er types and you seem a good guide on it This is really beautiful by the way I love how the cerulean and bubbles give it an underwater effect. And your tutorial helps lots too

I have a 48 set too I think it's enough, although I wouldn't go under that. Some people can work with less but not me. I use Koh-I-Noor water-soluble colored pencils. I made a mistake, I didn't want the water-soluble ones, they are way softer but I keep using them cause they were expensive. I really wonder what the regular ones are like, I bet they are far easier to use. I have to work in many layers with these but I seem to manage

Yeah it sucks that they are really expensive and you have to use them else it's all for nothing I find it irritating that when i work in layers at times the paper will not absorb any more colors D: is it me or just the paper quality? thanks for answering by the way

No probem!
Your layers need to be very very light so the problem wouldn't appear, at least not straight away. That way you can mix many different colors too. And while doing it keep your pencil sharp! That is if you want it to be smooth.

This is amazing! I love how you can colour it to make it seem so... realistic and have done a tutorial for the rest!!
this is really helpful and i'm going to it immediately, 'cause i know this will help me when i would do a project for my artist class (my topic touchs to much of realistic style and i suck at paiting to get the effect ._.).
THANKS FOR THIS!!

Thanks, I'm glad you find it helpful! I hope you'll do well at that art class. But when it comes to realism it doesn't matter what you use for drawing, it's all about how you see things and if you are able to transfer that to a paper. This is just one of the coloring techniques, it can be used for any style. Anyway, I hope you'll have fun with it!

I hope so! I remember your colored pencil drawings. I don't know if it's because of the poor picture quality but I think they need more depth and contrast.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
synne-amanda In reply to XFadedToBlackX [2010-01-15 22:00:15 +0000 UTC]
It's partly cause of the very poor picture quality, partly the colored pencils I use (they don't give off much color you see...) I'll get some new ones.. actually I've already got some new ones, but not that many colors, so I still need more of them. I really want to get prismacolors though..
oh, and of course it's also because I'm not quite sure how to use the colors, or which colors to use to make it look better, with more depth..
I'll try to get better at all of this.. I just need some new art supplies.. and a better cam, or probably a good scanner. So, the tutorial you made, I'll use that one for help in my next colored pencil drawing.

XFadedToBlackX In reply to synne-amanda [2010-01-16 22:46:33 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, sometimes pencils can be bad quality and leave a very small amount of color on paper. That can't happen with water-soluble ones I use, they are really soft. Actually they are even softer than I'd like them to be XD
I wanted to order Prismacolors from amazon but they had it only on the American site so they were really expensive because of the shipping and taxes so I gave up. I'm satisfied with Koh-I-Noor though. And I heard Faber-Castel are good too.
You don't need way too many pencils. I have 48 and it's enough. Someone even told me once they use only 24 and they are perfectly fine with it. I saw a drawing done with a 24 set and it looked great. I guess the technique of layering I use can help with mixing the colors a bit. But then you mustn't press!
I got a second-hand scanner that wasn't used a lot so it wasn't expensive.

I see.. well, that's good^^ but still, I only have 10 of those pencils in good quality. Oh, yeah, I have a few (3 XD) Faber-Castel pencils..and they're really good Lyra isn't too bad either, but Derwent totally suck -.-
I got it! I'll quit pressing the pencils against the paper.
Thank you so much for all the help/suggestions!

XFadedToBlackX In reply to synne-amanda [2010-01-18 19:17:12 +0000 UTC]
You're welcome!
I'm surprised you say Derwent isn't good, I heard otherwise. But I can't tell, I never used them. Almost everything I have of art material is Koh-I-Noor, cause it's what they sell the most here. Other brands are harder to find. Faber-Castel can be found but it's really expensive. I hate that I can't find any Canson paper though -_-
