Description

Ushas awoke, and she felt incredibly well rested. She heard a quavering sound. She wondered what it could be. It sounded a bit like the sound her powers had made when made the light core. Being able to control anything made of light that is close by with the greatest of ease, she summoned the light core as she pumped her powers into the levitation system...out through her feet. She looked at the light core, then she freaked out!!!!!

"This light core that powers the temple was at least as big as I am right now. What happened to it? How long have I been asleep? She ran to the door to the light temple. Something didn't feel right. The air felt different. The world sounded different. She looked down.

She saw a city. Since she'd never seen a city, she didn't quite know what it was. She did recognize architecture though. She, after all, had just built the light temple mere hours ago. She was so distracted by this that she immediately flew down to investigate, forgetting all about the light core.

She flew down to the city. She saw various living beings scurrying between the buildings of the new city below her. She wondered, "Are they like me? Can they make their own light?" She did see light coming out of the windows, but it was not like hers. She landed on the street, all aglow. The street had been crowded, but all of the people had run into their homes upon seeing her. She wanted so desperately to talk to someone, to learn about this new part of her world. How had this city sprung up overnight?

She didn't know any customary greetings or even any spoken language, she reached out with her mind, and asked, "Is anyone here? I want to meet you! I am your mo...." Just then a young woman came into the street. She couldn't have been more than 14.

"Shhhhhh!" she exclaimed. "They're all afraid of you! Stop glowing so much!" This confused Ushas. "How will I make light? Why aren't you all making light?" "We can't! That's why everyone is afraid of you!"

"I am not like them after all." she thought. "We are shaped much the same though......it all does come from me I suppose."

She looked into the girls’ eyes. Appraising her. "What is your name?" she asked the girl. Ushas had a name. She figured the girl might too. "Samassa. What’s yours?" Ushas sensed in the mind of Samasa that her name roughly translated to "sunlight". "From me indeed." thought Ushas.

"It's Ushas, a pleasure to meet you. Now, if I tone down the glow will it help the people to approach me?"  she asked. "Couldn't hurt." the girl replied. Ushas toned down her appearance she looked more like the townspeople, however losing her natural glow also made her look more pale somehow. The townspeople deigned not to approach.

Ushas had been brimming with questions since the day the universe began, but now she had more than ever. She especially wanted to know where this city had come from. Sensing this Samasa beckoned her down this street! "Not here! Away from eyes. The people fear what they think your light stands for." Samasa snapped. Ushas didn't think much of anything about that comment. To her light had never "stood" for anything. Light was needed, plain and simple.

She followed Samasa down the street, the street ended at a river. The river seemed to be the edge of the city. "This river is vital to us; the water helps us to grow all of our crops so that we may eat." This excited Ushas. "Do you grow bananas?" she asked excitedly, referencing the only food that she knew existed. "What? No! What's a banana?" Usha blurted out a quick "Never mind!" Though the universe was her baby she was truly a baby in this universe, she had very much to learn.... bananas weren't even the only food she could eat. "To eat we raise cattle, we fish from the river, we pick fruits, and we grow grains," Samasa explained. "Are fruits foods that grow on trees?" Ushas asked. "Yes. But how do you not know that?" Samasa retorted. Usha ignored her. "Bananas are fruits! When do I get to try all your foods?" Samasa frowned back. "Look at the sky."

With the failure of the light core, and the people fleeing from her, and all the strange novel experiences she was having, like intelligent conversation, she had neglected to notice in all her curiosity and all her glow that the sun had not risen that morning. "The sun has not risen in two years. All life needs light." Samasa explained.

This hit Ushas where it hurt. "I have been naive. I have been a bad mother." She may have birthed the universe but she had been sleeping on the job. She knew she had slept for a long time after the birth, and now it was clear to her that she had not been asleep for one night. As her mind aligned with Samasa's she began to understand the meaning of idioms such as two years. While it was not very long to her, it was clearly too long for the sun not to rise. The sun was placed in just the right spot to support this world, but when it had not risen, she should have been there to provide her light for these beautiful people, these people who looked like her, her children. There she had been thinking about getting pregnant again before caring for the child she had….all of existence. Before she knew what she was doing her instincts kicked in.

She was made of light but she was not as hot as a sun. Remembering when the sun burned her hand she jumped in the river briefly, for all the good it would do. Then she ramped her light powers up. Mama Bear was mad. This planet's light was gone, and she didn't know why. Using idioms, she didn't quite understand she turned to Samasa and spoke. "Sweety, I'll be right back. Save a place at the dinner table for me.", smiling sweetly. Then she turned her powers up full bore, channeled her anger, and blasted off into space.

As she angrily pushed through the atmosphere a semi-amusing thought bubbled to the surface. “What the heck is a dinner table?”

Mere mortals cannot comprehend the true form of a goddess, not even if one landed on their street. For this reason, Ushas, and some of her “descendants” appear slightly differently in each picture.
