Description
Mini-drawing of a sleeping chasmosaurine Sierraceratops turneri from the Late Cretaceous of New Mexico (USA).Sierraceratops was described from a single specimen from the Hall Lake Formation, Sierra County (hence the animal's name). The first bones were found back in 1997, and the following year they were attributed to Torosaurus latus. It took a long time before new bones were collected, and finally, last year, a new taxon was described. The holotype includes parts of the skull, vertebrae, ribs, a shoulder girdle with a pair of forelimb bones and an ilium. The closest relatives of Sierraceratops were Mexican Coahuilaceratops magnacuerna and Texan Bravoceratops polyphemus. This ceratopsian was relatively small, 4.5 meters in length and had not very long, but massive brow horns (in the drawing they are, of course, enlarged by keratinous sheaths).
Black and white gel ink pens, 2022.
