Description For a while now I've been meaning to write a new Guide for how I draw in Sugimori's style, but I never had the time. Recently I was able to find time to make the guide, so here it is! I hope it's helpful. I'm pretty bad at giving advice (and by extension, even worse at writing guides) so if this isn't helpful at all I apologize.

Like it says at the end, if you have any questions regarding the guide, feel free to ask.

Enjoy.

Sorry for the late reply.

There isn't a download link listed here, since it's a program you have to purchase.

That guide is really awesome, I was already wondering how you could copy Sugimori's style like that, when I first noticed your drawing of Shiny Mewtwo, I'd have sworn it was made by him x)
I'm using Gimp but I'm not really experienced with computer colouring yet, so I hope I can use all the features there, too ^^
Thanks either way

How do you usually pick the colors of the shadows and highlights on your artwork?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Xous54 In reply to pally-den [2012-01-03 22:08:38 +0000 UTC]

For my Sugimori-style art of official PokΓ©mon I'm mainly aiming for totally accuracy of the style, so I just use the same colors Sugimori used in his artwork of the PokΓ©mon. If I'm making a Sugimori-style piece where I want to use my own colors, for shading I normally just gradually overlay some very dark blue until it looks right, and for highlights I overlay a lighter version of the base color until it looks right. Sometimes a piece calls for other lighting to be cast onto the PokΓ©mon (Zekrom and Reshiram have this a lot) so when it comes to that it's another case of gradually adding a color until it looks right.

In all of my other work, though, I normally just pick the colors of the shadows and highlights as I go. (Unless I have a good idea of how I'm going to color in the piece from the get-go, which was the case with my latest Musketeer pieces.)

Unfortunately I'm terrible at explaining things, so I hope this helps at least a little. If there's anything I need to explain more, let me know and I'll try my best.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Xous54 In reply to Big-Sax [2012-01-03 21:59:58 +0000 UTC]

For this guide, I simply used the same colors Sugimori used. I only do this for the official-style artwork for the sake of accuracy - in my other artwork I choose my own colors.

What is that other little bit of color on the tail and body. Its just a darker yellow. How do you do that and can you name the brush that you use.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Xous54 In reply to HonoKuma [2011-12-25 01:35:43 +0000 UTC]

Hm... I'm not exactly sure what you're referring to, but do you mean the way the base yellow kinda has two different colors of yellow in it (one lighter, one darker)? First I put down the lighter color of yellow and then zig-zagged the brush with the darker yellow across it. The brush I used is the same as the one I used in the rest of the image. (Normal circular brush, 68 Hardness.)

If that's not what you're talking about, I apologize. D:

Jasc Paint Shop Pro 9 is actually a pretty old program. My mom bought it a few years back, but I don't know where she got it. You can probably do a search for it and a place to buy it should come up.

Newer versions of the program go by the name "Corel Paint Shop Pro," so if you're interested in getting the latest version look for that.

I'm new to computer colouring, and a lot of what you explained here I can use for non-Sugimori drawings.
I guess it just took Pokemon to make it stick
Is there anything Pikachu can't do?

how do you know the best colour and/or shade to use?
and are there colours/shades that should not be used for Sugi style?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Xous54 In reply to DNZGames [2011-12-18 00:09:24 +0000 UTC]

As far as Sugimori-style artwork goes, if you're going for accuracy you can simply use the same colors he uses in his artwork. If you're making a yellow Fakemon, for example, look for a PokΓ©mon with that color and use the colors from Sugimori's art for that PokΓ©mon. I don't recommend this if you're going for complete originality, but if accuracy of the style is a must, then this can be considered a shortcut.

However, if you want to come up with your own colors for Sugimori-style work, here are a few tips: The colors he uses are muted somewhat. Try going for colors that look a bit dull. (Like if you want a purple, try going for a color that looks like purple + gray.)

For shades, I've found the shades seem to come from mixing the base color with a bit of very dark blue at varying opacities. The darker the area, the more you'll notice the blue coming out.

Colors that should be avoided for Sugimori-style art are colors that are very vibrant. As stated previously, he mostly uses colors that are a bit dulled down.

i know you're a very busy person, but if you could may you give some feedback on [link] - I know the drawing itself is not brilliant (i drew it with a mouse on MSPaint) but I just want to see if I'm getting the style ok.

Xous54 In reply to DNZGames [2012-01-03 22:20:51 +0000 UTC]

Sorry for the late response - it's hard to keep up with comments sometimes. xD

Overall, the style looks pretty nice. The only thing I can think of to critique is the way the tail is shaded. This is mostly my opinion on it, since as it's shaded now it looks fine style-wise - all of the shadows and highlights are positioned right.

I would have made the majority of the tail shaded dark (the dark yellow used on the feet, etc.) with the brightest parts being the normal (base color) yellow instead of the brightest yellow that's used there now. Basically, coloring in the tail as if it were "further back". This gives the image a little more depth and gives the impression that the head and other parts of the image with the brightest yellow are closer to the viewer.
