xyxtlin — Fatter isn't always better

Description
I get a little tired of people implying (or just outright saying) that anything fatter I draw is always better (no matter how much work I put into something I've just drawn that just happens to look "slimmer" pay no attention to higher quality line art folks!).

I was feeling a bit more irked about it last night than usual, I decided to make a statement with this little "tutorial"

Yes, I could just draw super fat things, yes I could do drawings in 5 minutes flat... why wouldn't I? because I care about quality.

Admittedly I'm just an amature artist, and I don't have nearly as much talent as most people here on DA, but at least I care about some of the art I do.

Bring out the flame throwers

Post Production note: "Looks" was a typo, and I'm too lazy to go back and fix it

Oh yeah... by the way... people have different visions of how big something is. It's not really "size distortion"... what may be chubby to one's view may be fatter to someone else's view.
I personally think your "chubby" girls are very plump. Besides, "chubby" is a size spectrum within the fat spectrum.

I feel the same way about my art, Xyxtlin!
But, I do like chubby through obese sizes. So, I think I am fairly flexible, it's just that I don't draw really fat things at the moment.
Anyway, I completely understand how you feel.

As an artist, I think I'd like your style whether skinny or fat, but then again, I'm not into super huge females like you've just described. I just find chubby cute. Yes, I do look for art that has some sexual feel to it, but I also look for something that has effort to it- just look at my favs - there's a mix between fetish art and other things. Just ignore them, they need to calm down.

well, I don't really need it anyway. I'll just keep drawing what I want to.

Hahahaha! I absolutely love this picture. Had me laughing, especially the legs and flag.

Onto the actual message. It must just be me, but I don't really get any requests or comments like that. I think that it's just a few people, and the nature of the community doesn't lend itself well for just being artistic. It's pretty obvious to me when I do a piece and there's more comments saying out good the girl looks rather than the quality of the art. I don't mind at all mind you, as I've been in the community for as long as you have(Not producing though) and sort of expected it. It can get a little discouraging since we, as artists, can easily discern quality art and may feel a little annoyed or jealous of low quality getting such high praise. It's a shame, but in the end it's something that's never going to go away. Anyway, nicely said and done.

thanks for your feedback man, I appreciate it.

I have to say that its not so much being compared to other artists that bugs me, its when stuff I worked much less on are "better" than stuff I actually cared enough to put effort into.

lol

Right, gotcha. I just felt it could easily be applied that way, which you've probably noticed. It just goes on to reinforce that yeah, you're correct. I've often felt weird that some of my backgrounds people love and they'll be quick rush jobs that I didn't particularly care about. But this all goes onto the very old notion that we should produce for ourselves. I particularly find that hard when it seems my fans keep me going, but it's probably the best advice I could give.

I don't comment much on /anything/. Stuff I like, stuff I don't like... if I comment on it, it's got some sort of commentable trait. There are three things I can see in art. Style, polish, and content. Style is something that will be present throughout all your drawings. It's something I could point out on your userpage, or else repeat myself a billion times, and even so, I couldn't go into much detail. I could say your style is generally cute, but that's all I could pinpoint, despite that I know there's a lot more to it. I think that's true of most people who comment, too, unless they're also artists. Then there's polish. If I know more than an artist about polish, then they probably don't care enough to bother commenting, and otherwise, they know more than me, so I couldn't pinpoint any problems they didn't already know about, and certainly not any sollutions. Once more, I think this is something true of most of the community that doesn't draw.

After that, we have content. This is a more dicey topic. Here we get into things that non-artists will have an opinion about, and where we get into intent of the artist. Intent often shines through, which is why people can look at pictures of something they dislike and be disgusted, but look at pictures of someone with a fetish for said thing and be /angered/. What's the viewpoint of the picture? What is its purpose? To be sexy? To be cute? Funny? Inspirational? Sad? Was it just practice and happens to have a sexy undertone? Then we add viewers. Everybody looks at art for their own reasons. I will admit that I primarily look for art of things that are sexy. I'm a very sexual person in general, and I'm not ashamed of it. I think, ashamed or not, most non-artists do the same. Especially those with fetishes that can't be attained in real life. As such, people with that sexual draw are drawn towards pictures that A) Fall withing what I consider sexy and B) are intended to be sexy, and these can be mutually exclusive. Seeing something you consider sexy /not/ intended so, to some people, ruins it. So, I think most people aim for B then A. As such, if they comment, they often ask for the artist to draw something closer to their interests, or pay more attention to the ones that do. It's a bane of not only the inflation and weight gain community, but of every community that draws sexual things. The weight gain aspect can make things seem worse, at times, however, because very different fetishes often seem similar. I like seeing girls of immense proportions, not just chubby. That's /me/. You don't, that's /you/. But we're considered to have the same fetish on a basic level. So, people with this fetish, who don't actively think about it, think that because you draw chubby, you like all levels of fat that they do, and don't think it's a problem to ask for bigger. Cause to them, bigger /is/ better, if it's drawn with the same style and polish the rest of your work gets. To you, it isn't, because you can't get the viewpoint of sexy across as easy when it /isn't/ sexy to you.

Of course, that makes this a fitting attack, as it's always unpleasent to see something you like portrayed negatively.

Heh. Forgive the long winded pose. I tend to think a lot on sexuality, interests, and all that.

Ehh. Kinda both. I understand where you're coming from, but the way the picture comes off to me is like it's anti-my-fetish as opposed to anti-people-who-don't-appreciate-art-for-art, so there's just a little bit of discomfort that leaks into the post.

xyxtlin In reply to PersonaOMEGA [2006-07-05 01:45:09 +0000 UTC]

well I'm more anti-me-drawing-that than anti-anyone-else-drawing it. I guess you could see this as "you want me to draw it? draw it yourself, here's a tutorial of how I'd draw it for you" sort of post. People who want that kind of stuff should go to people like you, not me, lol.

PersonaOMEGA In reply to xyxtlin [2006-07-05 05:38:06 +0000 UTC]

:Giggles: Well, I'm a writer and a chef, not an artist. They should go to the people I know, I suppose. And like I said, I understand where you're coming from, which is why the post wasn't /really/ negative or anything. People are allowed to like whatever they want, and even participate in it provided it doesn't harm anybody, and just as much, they're allowed to dislike whatever they want, provided they don't use that dislike to harm anybody (though with this one, there's the addition of "Who doesn't deserve it"). I really do understand the hate that comes from "Awesome, but could you do /this/ situation instead?". It's an incredibly selfish thing to ask, especially if you don't know the person, or even worse, know the person doesn't like that, or likes what they're asking to stop.

I've never had to experience it, not being an artist, but I can identify from a creator's point of view. If you don't like the food, don't order at the restaraunt.

I concur with your statement to Shadow. Before I eliminated my previous gallery, I had maybe...3 drawings that really suggested FAism, yet I was impaled by the sheer amounts of requests for drawing overly-inflated females.

I would think that you should stop doing pin-ups. Some people expect you to focus on the fetish than the quality because that's what it seems the form of art you make is centered around that. (the form of art being pin-ups)

I must admit that I was like that once. A long time ago, right after I started on DA.

If you never see any skinnies, you never appreciate the fat ones. I like to look at skinny women from time to time just for comparison purposes

To tell you the truth, I'm more likely to fav a fat/inflated drawing then a skinny one because my account here is about the fetish. Sometimes I see something that's just really well done or makes a point and I'll fav that too but it tends to happen signifigantly less. Just the way it is :/

heh heh... this amuses me... I've occasionally thoughht of drawing a stick girl with giant boobs just to see what'd happen. I don't hang around parg much, but from what I've seen and heard. Some people there don't seem to be into noticing how long it took for the artist to make it.. only finding sources of Beat-off material.

I don't mind character's being fat either, but y'gotta show definition of anatomy, otherwise it's gonna look really half-assed.

I'd have to agree with you here Xyx, it doesn't just happen for the WG side either...

I drew a little test picture when someone said "Draw your character Kihou spherized!" I literally drew a circle, then put her features on said circle. Wouldn't you know that's the only non-fanart picture to get over 1000 hits?

Yet all my normal art, only my best of best friends really comment on it anymore.

So I'll say hurrah here, and I agree... there's an overflow of said art like you mentioned... and too much hype for it.
