Description As a companion piece to "Fred & Sylvia", I drew up these profiles. According to research done by Col. John W. Harris, USAF, Retired, this B-26 Invader was originally built as a B-26B by Douglas Aircraft in Tulsa Oklahoma. As originally built, it had ten 50 caliber guns, 6 in the nose and two twin 50 gun turrets. Add to that, assorted bomb packages, rockets... and you have a pretty formidable flying machine.

The B-26 Invader was a real hot rod and an incredibly versatile aircraft, it had twin 2000 hp Pratt & Whitney R-2800-27 "Double Wasp" two row 18 cylinder radial engines. The B-26 Invader had a top speed of 355, initial climb of 2000 feet per minute with service ceiling of 22,100 feet! Empty, she weighed 22,362 LB and fully loaded she weighed in at at a whopping 41,800 LB! The B-26 Invader had a wingspan of 70 feet, a length of 50 feet 8 inches and a height of 18 feet 6 inches. The B-26 came in several configuration and could carry as many as 14 Colt-Browning M-3 50 caliber machine guns! A fully loaded B-26 could carry 6000 LB of Bombs, 4000 LB internally and 2000 on her wings! Can you spell destruction boys and girls? For a prop driven plane, the B-26 was noting to mess with!

Her crews loved her for her speed, power and durability. She could pack a punch and take a beating and still keep flying. Although originally built in WWII, the B-26 saw action in both the Korean and Vietnam Wars! Today there are a few still flying, many more are museum pieces. The B-26 Invader was a real fighting machine and a tribute to the guys who flew them and the guys who maintained them.

Thanks! I've been working with a retired AF pilot and navigator on these. They will come up with photos and details and I illustrate them, it's a fun project. We are trying to document every B-26 that the 13th Bomb Squadron flew during the Korean War. -YD
