Description Here are two panels from Sonic issue 166. On the left, we see my original pencils, where Sonic is bawling over the loss of his children in the future. And on the right is the toned down version for the final product.

If you were a parent who lost your children, I'm pretty sure you would cry every ounce of H2O out of your body =/

i'm just curious: did you tone his bawling down because you thought it was out of character?

No, my editor asked me to tone it down.

I know this comic thing is in 25 years into the future when Sonic was king, wasn't it? If so, I wanna know what exactly happened to his kids? Poor Sonic though.

I too suspect it was Sega insisting that Sonic be "tough". The more emotions, the better, as far as I'm concerned. Regardless of Sega's interventions though, wonderful work.

I still don't get why SEGA allowed Shadow to cry in 171 when they hate to see Sonic crying. Not that I didn't like it, I'm just surprised. Or was it just because Shadow wasn't crying too hard? Or because they care more about Sonic's "cool" image? Or was it covered a while ago and I missed it?

Back on topic, I don't get why SEGA would think that showing emotion is a bad thing. Well, I will never get them anyway, so I might as well not even try.

Trance88 In reply to Ultra-Devil-Chao [2007-03-13 18:26:41 +0000 UTC]

Why wouldn't they allow the comic to give them emotions that sega hasn't?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Ultra-Devil-Chao In reply to Trance88 [2007-03-14 18:49:59 +0000 UTC]

Because, SEGA is going for the "cool" image for Sonic, and in their minds, showing that you care about things (AKA showing emotion) is not "cool". Talking about...

I have that issue. I never knew they toned that part down. I think it would've been better if he did cry, like in your orrigenal drawings.

I guess Sonic, being a "hip" video game character is not allowed to show any slight emotion like that...
After all... Apparently crying is onley for "wusses."

Loss of his CHILDREN!?
I knew I should've read that issue.
honestly,I think they should've used your original version-it shows more emotion.
I know they probably did it so that the children who read it wouldn't be upset.
Still the final version is cool.

Ahh, so that's what it's like in the comic biz.

You know, I've been thinking for a long time now of making a fan comic of a plot starring Sonic, Amy, and some of me and my friends characters. But I have absolutely no experience, mind sharing some small advice?

By the way, I just got my newest comic Wednesday, and I've noticed Archie's been using you in many of the past issues...did they make you the offical artists for the rest of the series?

That's very interesting, I really like the penciled version a lot! I think they show the emotion of what Sonic was going through. But, the final looks good to? So, how did you get the job at Archie?

NOOOOOO! poor Sonic he looks so heart broken,
who killed his kids and why?, how many kids did he have?, son(s) or (and) daughter(s),
whats their names, do thay look like him ^w^, whos the lucky one to be his wife.
Please tell me because im so far behind, the last one i bought was #115 so i never really
heard of you till now on dA
dont get me wrong i haven't gone off the comics its just that there was only one shop
that we knew that that sold them, now its not there anymore
i think its been 3 years now?, tell me on your free time though i understand how busy you are,
P.S your art is awsome! Keep up the great work!

Yardley In reply to Emm456 [2006-11-24 05:44:38 +0000 UTC]

Um, that's a lot to explain, but in the possible future, Sonic had two kids. Manic and Sonia with Sally, but then he did some time travelling to fix the past, and as a result his future was altered so that he no longer had children, but still remembers them from his previous alternate future. WHEW! I know that's confusing. But if you read the Mobius 25 Years later stories iwhich came out in the 140's, I believe and issues 166 and 167, you'll get the whole answer.

I thought that something didnt fit there. Your style is always so expressive, but Sonic just didnt seem as "devestated" as one would think. Though I understand why, seeing it's always been said really the only thing SEGA ever asks for in the comic is that Sonic never appear weak.

Hmm..I think that for the first two--the second panel better fits the situation, in which he has to deal with the shock of it all...But the second panel makes him look more annoyed than anything else...But breathtaking work, nonetheless!

Haven't gotten the comic yet but I've heard spoilers around. It's quite a dramatic contrast between the two, though I have to admit I do like the end result of the first sample. Only because it makes it look like the fact that his family is gone has just hit Sonic, and he's still reeling over it.

The first version of the second sample would have been awesome in the comic, though. We never really get to see Sonic just break down, and after losing his family it would have been fitting. Either way, you expressions amazes me and I love them. I'm looking forward to getting the comic to see the whole story in action. :3

Nice dramatic looks, as usual - could be the biggest thing since 'The Darkest Storm'!

They both look really awsome!
But I kinda like the 2nd ones. (On the right)

I guess the ones on the left, to me, are too realistic for the Sonic I know.
I mean, the first ones DO show a lot of gripping emotion. But, the re-drawn ones just seem more "Sonic-y"to me. ^_^

Great job, again!

You know, I'd have to say I much prefer the more intense display of emotion in your original panels. It's his CHILDREN for pete's sake, he should be emotionally destroyed, not mildly shocked... :/ I'm willing to bet you had to tone it down because of more than a few coporate high-ups not willing to destroy his "image". Down with that I say.

Yardley In reply to Kasumi9 [2006-09-14 17:24:17 +0000 UTC]

Please don't do that. I was just showing this as a fun insight into the book. Its true that Sega does not want Sonic portrayed as too weak, so that's why Mike Pellerito asked me to tone it down. Writing to Archie and Mike won't change Sega's mind, and I don't want to cause Mike any trouble 'cuz he's a great guy and has been wonderful to work with.

The left side shows him in utter agony, whereas the right just shows shock, confusion, and pain. He doesn't have the nearly shattered look in the right side. Admittably, I prefer the left.
