Description I love owls. This is a Great Horned Owl from the Brookfield Zoo. It's a case of being there at the right time. This guy had just finished a health checkup and was being brought back to his perch. The keeper happened to walk by while I was photographing some of the other animals. I immediately stopped what I was doing to drool over the owl. She saw my interest and slowed down, sensing I had questions or something. I lifted my camera meekly and asked if I could photograph him. She said yes so I took the chance. So glad I asked! This was the only picture I got of him and thank goodness it turned out! A few other kids started freaking out when they saw me so close to the owl, thinking they could pet him. But the keeper was smart enough to take him away so only I got some up-close time with him.

I did edit this some, cropped it to focus on the owl and did some other minor edits. But the picture turned out well on its own so I'm quite pleased.

He is so pretty. It's a fantastic shot, he's so crisp and clear.

At work I tend to get asked a lot if people can pet the birds... kids actually understand they aren't like a doggy or kitty better than adults when I explain why they can't pet them. Usually it's the adults who have the look on their face as if they're thinking, "you can touch it why can't I?"

Thank you so much! I was pretty much reacting to him as a teenage girl would react to some sexy male celebrity.

I would never pet a bird in the wild, just because I have common sense and an elementary education. Isn't it sad how so often a child's understanding and intelligence can fade away and just make them a jerk?

Yea it's impressive how the common sense you learn as a child just fades away in some people.

I don't know if you are into domestic birds too; but the Kaytee Company up in Chilton used to do live shows with birds. Maybe they still do, but it was some years ago.

I like all birds but I don't live anywhere near Chilton. I took this on a vacation up in Chicago.

My bad, when you said "Brookfield Zoo", I immediately thought of Brookfield, WI. Then I remembered, "hey, Brookfield doesn't have a zoo!"

Lol, actually, I meant Brookfield in Chicago, IL. I was up in WI briefly during that vacation though I don't live up there.

Did you go up in that one skyscraper, the one with the glass bump out?

Sears Tower? Nah. Not a big fan of heights and there are other sights in Chicago I'd rather see.

I actually went there a few years ago. It's neat but I prefer the Field Museum.
