Description This is the same design as seen in my "steampunk mecha" deviation, now being lovingly modeled in 3D par moi. I'll be updating this post nightly with my progress on the model.

Day 1: Started from a blank scene in 3DS Max 9, modeled basic legs, missile shoulder, and cockpit.

Day 2: Detailed the cockpit and added dual cannon shoulder. I'll probably redesign the chair to be more stylish. Switched to rendering with mental ray instead of 3DS scanline.

Day 3: Made basic backside of the mech and detailed that top shoulder thingy.

Days 4 & 5: Focused on leg articulation and details. Slow going, sorry for missing a day. Did some experimenting with lighting and rendering.

Remember, this is a work in progress!

Incredible! Very inspiring! I would love to see detail on the back matching the detail put into the legs

Thank you! Hopefully someday I can make time to finish this guy up properly.

Looks like it could kick some ass lol. Did you make this all from one peice?

I'm new to 3D Max and trying to get advice and befreind other 3D modlers

Hiya! I've been using a mixture of box modeling (via Edit Poly) and modeling from primitives. Lots of cylinder and tube primitives. The model currently consists of 149 separate objects, although probably about 120 of those are instances of little bolts and rivets.

I've been saving out copies of the file as I progress, currently sitting at 16 files. I'm planning to show some sort of animation or slideshow of the development of the model once I finish it, so you might be interested in that.

I most certainly would be! I have 22 saved versions of my creature model, mainly because I dont trust my file not to get corrupted. I've been trying to boxmodel everything from a single primative. My lecturers havent told me much else, but its early days!

Thanks Mai! Dunno, probably not with those smokestacks.

Love what you've done with legs.

I think you could experiment with adding more bulk to the pelvic platform area, though. The legs and upper body are now quite beefy, and makes that area look quite unfurnished and weak.

ZackF In reply to HunterKi11er [2008-01-13 23:29:10 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I've been thinking about how impossibly thin the pelvic area looks at this point. I'll do something about reinforcing it once I finish off the legs completely. Thanks man.

Looking good Zack, can't wait for the textures and the cockpit details (that was my favourite part!)

ZackF In reply to Callypso [2008-01-10 18:50:02 +0000 UTC]

I'm tempted to go all-out on the cockpit since there's tons of cool gadgetry stuff I could put in there, but in terms of it being a faux videogame asset very little of that stuff would be noticeable.

Csp499 [2008-01-08 04:57:55 +0000 UTC]

Well, at this point it's naturally so, but it doesn't look too "steampunkish". I'd think a steampunk-style mecha would have more exposed framework, and something like a big chimney coming out the back, and nothing all smooth like that module on the side.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ZackF In reply to Csp499 [2008-01-08 05:07:43 +0000 UTC]

Granted, I haven't really gotten to the steampunky details yet. I suppose it's more like general 19th-century aesthetics rather than specifically steam-powered technology, although I haven't ruled that out yet. Keep in mind that this is currently a work in progress from a single day of work; the side module will be more detailed eventually.
