Description
Finally got around to finishing this sucker thanks to a lot of prodding from my bro Dan. Here it is, boss! Now to get cranking on the ancient temple scene. The textures are all painted. As practice I didn't use any photo texture sources for this.
2,800 tris. Diffuse, spec, normals at 1024x1024. 3D modeling in 3DS MAX, textures in PS CS4, renders in Marmoset.
edit2: Updated with two more angles. Wires forthcoming.
edit3: Updated with better render and a wireframe view.

who cares if impractical? Will scare them off!

p.s, tip heavy blades are good for downward slashing and crushing attacks, so it really wouldnt matter with a sword like that if the pommel and handle arent heavy enough to offset the blade

well i dont see anything impractical about the blade itself, only the guard. i could probably forge this in my own forge, ofcourse taking off the bladed guards and adding a personalized one that would actually work. but aside from that it isnt impractical, just needs some work and altering. actually, the blade itself is a very beautiful design, mind if i borrow it and actually forge it for future projects?

It's been a while, but I think I added the bloom in Photoshop by masking out the brightest parts of the image, duping that, then blurring it and setting it to Lighten or Dodge.

Ok. I was hoping it was done in engine somehow :s

It is slightly impractical (not balanced right unless that hilt is a lot heavier than it looks; axe blades should be farther away from the hands and they would make the weight distribution even worse)... but awesome looking!

lots of polygons on that sword, and it doesn't really seem impractical, more like downbalanced
Very cool looking nonetheless, very detailed

Its funny, everytime I look for inspiration pieces you always come up! I've already faved this piece a while back, but as I'm now doing research into sword topology (specifically the wrapped leather features on a handel) I would love to see what your textures look like, or even a full wire frame rotation as I just can't get my head around how well modelled you have the handle, and well... just damn well all of it! Keep up the great stuff as always Zack!

...CAN I HAZ!!! Very shiney *0* the detailing is wonderful on the hilt and you can tell by the glint where the light is coming from. That sometimes is forgotten in abyss with digital/ game development art. Bravo! Very nice job.

Great piece of work, didn't know that you really could paint it with your hand instead of taking a photo as the source!

Thanks! Texture painting can be a lot of fun, especially if you are going for a sort of stylized look.
