Description
Finally got around to finishing this sucker thanks to a lot of prodding from my bro Dan. Here it is, boss! Now to get cranking on the ancient temple scene. The textures are all painted. As practice I didn't use any photo texture sources for this.
2,800 tris. Diffuse, spec, normals at 1024x1024. 3D modeling in 3DS MAX, textures in PS CS4, renders in Marmoset.
edit2: Updated with two more angles. Wires forthcoming.
edit3: Updated with better render and a wireframe view.

Too wide to be a dagger and too short to be a sword; it looks like it could be a gladius almost..Nevertheless, it's freakin awesome! I really wish I had your texturing skills! I have a hard time making metal look like metal

Hehe, I'll take your word for it -- no master of blade terminology am I. Thanks, glad you like it!

Sweet~
I actually came back to this. Decided to leave another comment...
So you did this in an imaging program? Pretty damn cool; looks like you made it by hand, rather than with a mouse.
Lessee~ um~
I dunno if you take requests at all, especially from strangers, but... could you make a bastard sword of an odachi and a fakir's horn?

Thanks! Yep, this is all made with digital painting, modeling and rendering programs. I actually didn't use a mouse for the painting part, using a drawing tablet is pretty crucial for most digital artwork. Hehe, interesting request, I'm not sure how I'd go about combining those. For now though I'm focusing on more sci-fi stuff.

Thanks for replying yet again to my review. Please let me know if you're gonna pick up the request.
`Til next time, dude.

Thank you very much! I've learned a lot from looking at the processes other artists use, so I try to include some of mine in my gallery.

Nice detail on the blade. The whole thing is very "Devil May Cry".

Thanks! Very true, that series definitely goes over the top with their weapon designs.

It's an axe-bastard-sword, it also has a dagger-like blade on it so it can be used by rogues!

well deserved DD this is splendid, I really like the design. my only worry is, as I'm a bit less into next gen, isn't it a bit heavy in ressources seeing the texture size and polycount?

Thank you! Well, as is usually the answer regarding mesh optimization, it depends. As a first-person mesh for a game like Oblivion it'd be perfectly fine. As a third-person mesh it's a bit more iffy, but that still depends on the game. Most likely it'd get LOD'd to being a 512 map and under 2k triangles as a third-person mesh.

You bet, with such a sword the PC's hand would look lame in Oblivion XD ...I still love to go around with it though. And slice people and monsters just for the sake of using it.
I see, it sounds right this way. Holy LOD... =]

wooow actual game art in the game art section!
This is pretty beautiful, I've tended to stay away from high poly stuff but things like this really try to lure me.

Haha, I know right? Some people seem to think that "game art" means "take screenshots of your favorite game." Argh. Thanks man!

This is a fantastic model... it really fits the "over-the-top fantasy" style perfectly... like something you'd see in today's MMOs
Also, painted textures? Wow... kudos to you. What do you use for a tablet?

Did you paint the textures in photoshop using the 3d features or by taking uvs and bringing them into photoshop? If you used ps's 3d feature oh well does it work? I have yet to use it lol

kouotsu In reply to Beast0785 [2009-11-24 07:59:52 +0000 UTC]
I've been trying out CS4's poly painting the past few days. It has two major flaws:
1. There's no masking feature so if you have polygons behind what you're trying to paint they will catch any painting that goes off the edge.
2. You can double click and open up the model's texture in another tab to work on whichever you want dynamically, but there's a common problem of the connection between the two files being lost, so drawing on the texture doesn't affect the model's texture and vice versa.
I'm still going to be using it a lot, but just as a side tool with regular painting. It's great for fixing seams and painting things that tend to unwrap poorly like hair. I hear you can paint alphas and see the results in real-time but I didn't actually try it yet.

I just went the traditional UV flats route painting on this one, so I can't comment on the Photoshop 3D painting stuff yet.
