Description
Finally got around to finishing this sucker thanks to a lot of prodding from my bro Dan. Here it is, boss! Now to get cranking on the ancient temple scene. The textures are all painted. As practice I didn't use any photo texture sources for this.
2,800 tris. Diffuse, spec, normals at 1024x1024. 3D modeling in 3DS MAX, textures in PS CS4, renders in Marmoset.
edit2: Updated with two more angles. Wires forthcoming.
edit3: Updated with better render and a wireframe view.

I used 3DS MAX and Photoshop to make the asset, and took a screencap of the render in Marmoset Toolbag, which is a free model viewer basically. 3DS MAX is exorbitantly expensive (well over a grand) but Photoshop is only around 300 if you get a Wacom tablet to go with it, which is just about necessary anyway.

Yeah, I have to admit, the Japanese have had an edge over Western artists in terms of impractical designs for a while now.

THAT.
Is highly impractical. So, how does PS4 work with 3D? I heard something about being able to paint directly on the model. Or did you just use UVs?

I just used traditional UVs to texture this sucker, although I'm considering using zbrush to paint out seams on assets in the future.

It's not highly impractical.
It's only, slightly, impractical..?

A number of people seem to agree with you here, but I think you guys just have low standards for practicality. C'mon, I mean, three blades?! Sheesh! Hehehe.

Hay, moar blades = moar killing.
What more do you want in a sword?
I certainly don't want to look fancy, I'll just swing it like a mace

it's not that impractical, it's not even dull.

ZackF In reply to ShadowoftheVlad [2009-11-23 20:03:22 +0000 UTC]
It may not be as impractical as some of the most absurd designs out there, but you have to at least admit that those extra blades would make the thing fairly unwieldy.

Impractical?.....NO! Swords NEED to have lots of useless parts and pieces on them in order for them to look really nifty and impressive! That way when the sword bearer faces against someone they say:
"Uh oh...that guy has a seriously brutal sword...I should run away first!" ::evil guy flees::
True story. ::nods solemnly::

Believe me, I completely understand the necessity of big swords and impracticality...but then again...you KNEW that, right?
Here's one I made... ever seen it before? hehe...

What do you mean, impractical? It cuts people, doesn't it?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
ZackF In reply to DeadPegasus [2009-10-21 18:21:16 +0000 UTC]
It does indeed, the problem is that the person wielding it is likely to be among those people.

Just don't fuck around with it while weilding it. It's no different from any other double edged sword. Practice makes perfect.
