History:

Dominion war had great impact on Federation and Starfleet, especially Starfleet which losed over one third of its total fleet. High numbers of lost ships and possible future threats meant rapid recovery. Multiple new classes of ships enter service to replace older classes which were shown as highly ineficient during the war, like Miranda and Excelsior classes. Starfleet needed new ships capable of combat but also capable of exploration. One ship was introduced during the Dominion war, Prometheus class. Despite the early incident with Tal-Shiar, class prove itself quickly in combat against Dominion. However MVAM was expensive and time consuming making production of Prometheus class slower then it should. After the war, Starfleet start its recovery and many new classes enter service. Among this new classes was Asgard class attack cruiser which was under development from 2377 and was launched in 2384. Asgard class was slightly bigger then Prometheus class but feature indentical systems to that of Prometheus with exception of MVAM. Officially ship was called Asgard class multi-purpose cruiser, however due fact that it carried marines, it was often called attack or assault cruiser.

After the launch Asgard become the fastest ship in the fleet. Highly manuverable this versatile cruiser prove herself over and over. Capable of outrunning anything in the quadrant and protecting itself against any threats.

Asgard tactical and defensive systems were similar to many Starfleet ships that enter service in that time. Her standard armament was 12x Type XII phaser arrays and four rapid/burst fire torpedo tubes that were capable of firing any torpedoes Starfleet use, Asgards often used only Quantum and Photon torpedoes. Her defensive systems were also quite strong and resilient, with her system been slightly stronger then that of the Prometheus class but sharing the same heavy Duranium/Tritanium hull with 18 cm of Ablative armor and high level structural integrity field. Asgard also have EM dispersal field.

Class was often deployed on less dangerous borders and outside Federation space to protect other exploration or survey ships. Although primary warship, in Starfleet tradition ship is equipped with exploration laboratories and VIP quaters. This allows crew to explore and also to initiate first contacts as well carrying diplomats. Ship have slightly larger but equally advanced sickbay and her EMH can move around the ship thanks to the holographic emitters on all decks.

One of unique part of the ship were here warp nacelles which were quite modular and pylons were designed to be able to fit different nacelles if needed. This means Asgard can receive brand new redesigned nacelles without any problem.

Asgard class also carry small number of MACO, these marines were often used on assaulting the enemy ships, starbases or planteray bases. While Asgard crew praise the class, they were uncommon sight due small numbers as many other classes enter service. One of the class responsible for lower number is Inquiry which was primary response cruiser from mid 2380's. Despite not been the thoughest ship in the fleet, Asgard by far is the fastest one and will continue to serve Starfleet well into 25th century.
