Description
1-
In photoshop, start out with a new picture, size 50 px by 50 px. Using the the percentage count in the bottom left corner, let's make our icon 4 times bigger so we can sketch in detail. Figure out a good brush, and sketch away. Also, create a new, blank layer labeled 'lines', which we will use in the following step.

2-
Okay, now you need to line it. Pick the color you want to have your lineart (you can change it later) and MAKE SURE YOU ARE ON THE LINES LAYER! If you aren't, you'll have to start over again. Of course, you can always use my best friend, Step Backward (Alt+Ctrl+Z) to get as far back as you can, and hopefully not have to redo your sketch.

3-
Now time to color. First, transparent our sketch layer by clicking the eye, so that it disappears. Color flat, not time for shading yet. Also, leave the eye space blank. We'll take care of that later.

4-
Make a new layer underneath the color layer for eyes. and draw your eyes starting with the whites, and then going to irises, and then pupils. And on your color layer, shade. Do it yourself, shading is different with each artist.

OPTIONAL STEPS:

-Now, if you want to, you can add a bg, change the color of the lineart, whatever. You don't have to though. I added A PURDY FLOWER FIELD BG. RAWK ONNNNN

This should be somewhat close to your final. If you want to, you can animate the icon at iaza.com.
