Robert Hunter was abducted by Kree agents and experimented on. He developed the power to violently explode at will and reform his body. Despite this great power however, Nitro enjoyed few successes as a supervillain. His greatest claim to fame is exposing Kree superhero Captain Marvel to the experimental gas which caused his cancer and eventual death. His next success set into motion the events of the superhuman Civil War. During a battle with the New Warriors, Nitro, his powers amplified by the drug Mutant Growth Hormone, blew up the town of Stamord, Connecticut. The explosion killed the New Warriors and more than six hundred civilians. Nitro tried to escape only to be hunted down by Wolverine, who turned the villain over to Namor to be punished for his crimes. He has since been returned to American custody only to escape and continue his career as a small-time criminal.
