Description This sketch materialized in a dentist's waiting room. I was the ride for someone who was getting a lot of dental work done and couldn't drive. I found an interesting photo in one of the waiting room magazines and this sketch is what came of it. I didn't try to get a perfect likeness from the photo; I used it as "inspiration." But it probably still resembles the reference photo.

Freehand drawing, Moleskine sketchbook, approximately 5x5 inches, done in about 2 hours. Standard 0.5 mm mechanical pencil bought at the grocery store, HD lead.

I did some minor Photoshop adjustments and cleaning up on the drawing.

I like this sketch because again it's all CROSSHATCHING. Not one pencil stroke was purposely blended or smeared. I did lift up some pencil here and there with my mechanical pencil's eraser, but that was all. I kept some of the Moleskine paper creamy color in this scan.

Because I'm such a crosshatching geek, I made this cropped detail of some of the crosshatching:

U have a perfect feeling of the shape. The lightness of the shades are just where they need to be. I can't find anything to fight the eye.
You spent hours at the dentist's waiting room well ^^

wow, he looks beautiful....i guess it's just that if you make your money with beeing a male model
Even though i don't know the refpic, i think you drew him beautifully.
I'm more of a "blending-girl" but this crosshatching-style looks awesome.
It adds some kind of hardness on his face or makes his cheekbones and lips more pronounced. And the eyes are mesmerizing okay, i'll stop babbling

just...wonderful work

PS: i hope your friend didn't suffer to much at the dentist treatment

Thank you! I love crosshatching and have pretty much been drawing this way forever and I really enjoy it. And thanks, my friend was fine after the dentist visit. Heavy medication helped!

Cross hatching definitely suits his face, being all manly and stuff - no girly blending for him!

Thanks! No indeed, no blending! To be honest, I haven't blended graphite in . . . forever! I just prefer crosshatching.

Just been on your website - you got some pretty rockin stuff there kinda makes me wish i was into oil painting, it all looks so complex and awesome

Thanks! I'm glad you like the site!

Oil painting is awesome but don't be intimidated by it. I started painting when I was about 13 and trust me, I didn't understand the complexities then, but still managed to get along. The secret is to just get started!
