Description
This is my Phase 2 entry for the HARPG'S Next Top Horse show, hosted by *Kalesta ! I'm EXTREMELY proud of how this turned out, I was worried about the thin lines and it looking wonky, and not getting the conformation and the cross-contour lines right, but then I just kept going until I was done. I've never been that focused and into doing a show entry before, and I'm completely head-over-heels for this.Horse: PD Chex High Kaliber
Rider: Aubrie Collins
Talent: Western

Ok, I dont watch you at this point, so im not exactly familiar with this style, but I can give you an overall critique based on what I see. I know this entry is for a very big and very important show, so critique and constructive criticism are important.
Im going to start off with the Vision. How the image looks to me. The overall look of this image is more so on the dull side of the scale as far as liveliness goes. Brighter/more vibrant colours and action in the background will give an image more life. I myself and guilty of this kind of image. Stronger shading / more contrast would give a little more pop. This is a nice image, it just needs some stronger shading/contrast in my opinion.
When it comes to originality, I gave you a 5. There are a few reasons for this. The pose itself, is a very, VERY common one and can get very boring very quickly. I know that it is hard to get creative on barrel entries because theres on so many ways you can draw a horse running a barrel. It can be very exhausting. Past this, there are a few things that I love about this image. First, the score board in the background. I have never seen that and it really caught my attention. Very original and creative. You gave the ridges in the barrel where the colours meet, I like that. Its more realistic. My last point here, is the way you arranged the information was creative. Most only show the time and/or the run number.
Youre technique is more on the realistic side than others Ive seen. But let me give you some pointers using this piece. Your attention to detail is very keen. Its nice to look at. Well done. You have made sure that size comparison seems to flow. Most people overlook this. Even I do sometimes. Your grass looks good. Youre dirt looks like dirt, but is still has a spray-painted on look to it. I would suggest using a 3-colour palette. a light - a medium - a dark. medium shade on bottom, dark in the middle, and light on top. Make sure not to overdo it though. I have a brush to recommend, if youre interest, contact me. Where the time is on the board, in my opinion, would have looked better blurred. This, with a bigger spray of dirt, may have given it more of a quick, action shot feel to it. Maybe even blurring the background. Also, the shadow on the barrel is usually on the same side as the horse, because the horse/rider usually block the light thats reaching the barrel.
The overall impact of the image is not as high as I would like to see as a judge, but the overall feel of the image is pleasant. Its nice to look at and there are no conflicts that I can tell. It is well composed, just needs a little polish is all. Thank you for sharing your art with us and hope to see more in the future.
Sincerely,
J. Anthony

Alright, I always see you requesting critiques on everything and rarely does anyone critique. So I shall! e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s⦠" width="15" height="15" alt="

The lines on this piece are incredibly well done and detailed, I like how thin they are, I think it highlights the shading of the image yet gives it a very well finished appearance.
I personally think this is one of your best drawings as far as the shading goes! The shading on her chest and shoulder is especially well done.
Your rider looks great as usual! Her curly hair is done very well. Only thing I have to say about the rider is that I think there should be less highlights on her hat.. but maybe not, depending on how you want your image to appear as far as lighting goes ^^
The only major thing I think could use work is your background, and it's not that bad. I think the shadow under Kasey could be a little darker and a little bit more underneath her. More in front on her than behind her e.deviantart.net/emoticons/w/w⦠" width="15" height="15" alt="
" title="
(Wink)"/> Also try lightening up the dirt a little bit to make you shadow appear darker.
Your grass looks decent and so does the fence. Perhaps add a shadow from the fence?
Your scoreboard is very nice! Although it does look a little strange sitting in front of your fence, as the black pole doesn't completely cover the white pole of the fence. I think putting it behind the fence, or making the black pole just a tad longer would improve it's appearance. e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s⦠" width="15" height="15" alt="

Overall a very nice drawing - one of my favorites by you so far! Keep up the good work! e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s⦠" width="15" height="15" alt="

Wow. Just wow. I don't know what to say. Honestly, this is phenomenal. Just everything is so amazing. This lines. The rider. The colours. The sand. The details are stunning. You have really outdone yourself on this. I have to second the others, this is definatley one of your best entries. I can tell the effort you've put in. Really, really nice job. It's spectacular. <3

I think this is your best entry every It looks AMAZING. Looks fabulous, best lines ever for ya
I am guessing this is the second turn for them, because 1st barrel should be between 3-5 seconds, 2nd barrel between 6-10 and 3rd 10-15, and then the rest is about 3-5 seconds while running home. Mind you the lowest number being what the pros run(Sherry Cervi had a 6.8 when she rounded the second barrel heading to the 3rd during the 1st day of the 2009 NFR
I got the picture to prove it XD)

Awwwh, thanks! I love it too, I'm kinda getting an unhealthy obsession with this horse.

Amazing! I think this is your best entry yet! The only critique I would give is maybe coloring the lines for the hair strands? All the black is a bit distracting.

Really? Thanks so much!
I think so too, I'm still working out how to fix that. I think I will end up giving colored lines a try.
