Description
stuff on paper, inkscape, and some other digital twiddling.I am now working on some abstracts for my upcoming cafe show, but I wanted to knock this one out. It is of Skip McDonald, a man many of you may have heard but not heard of. He, along with Doug Wimbish and Keith LeBlanc formed the core of the house band at Sugar Hill Records and played on all those classic early rap cuts in the late 70s and early 80s by Grandmaster Flash, Afrika Bambaataa, and the Force MDs. The three then joined up with pan-sonic pioneer and On U Sound label head Adrian Sherwood and embarked on a recording career under 20+ different names (i.e. Tack>>Head, Fats Comet, Barmy Army, Strange Parcels) and as sidemen to various dub and pop sessions (Creation Rebel, Lee "Scratch" Perry, ABC, James Brown, Bomb the Bass, and Sinead O'Connor among them).
He has lead a variation of that same lineup as Little Axe, his merging of delta blues, dub, and electronica whose debut, The Wolf that House Built was the blueprint that Moby used to make his own Play album, although Little Axe did it with more conviction and less contrivance. Their fifth album (and second for Peter Gabriel's Real World label) Stone Cold Ohio is due next month.
His guitar style ranges from very earthy, dirty blues to very angular and effects laden aural barrages.
Some samples:

He seems to be doing quite a few solo shows over here lately. Sadly havent caught one yet. I really like the way you have gone beyong shading into a kind of abstract thing on his face! Great piece.

Wow, mate. Your stuff is always incredible, you have this fantastic way of making people more lifelike than if it were a direct potrait, or a photograph. It isn't what they look like, but what they're about.
Congrats, mate.
