Description
---This is a surprise gift for all the people that have subscribed me!
Still don't know the last ones but i hope you like the gift
---
This is an advanced layer tutorial. It will teach you how to use photoshop layers, the advanced way. If you are still basic inside photoshop i suggest you take some basic tutorials first.
excuse for the confusing guide, but deviantart didn't let me load images bigger than 10080x10080 pixels so i needed to
crop it up a bit.
---
!For those of you who can't read the tutorial because of to small texts!
Download the image, DeviantArt crops the full-size which is highly disturbing
---
I hope it helps!
And don't hesitate to send the results after you tried it!
Greetings,
Z
(my English isn't that great so if you see spelling mistakes that are really bad, tell me)

gotta give you my thanks, up untill i found your tutorial, i was strrugling to get to terms with the layer modes. even having bought a book on gimp image manipulations, layers arent explained effectivley for somone trying out graphic art.
once again thank you, and please dont take note to any critques mentioning grammar, only a fool would manage to misunderstand what you have written,
this will surely help me alot.

Very helpful... I use a lot of layer functions and layer styles in my work and I used to paint entirely in color from beginning to end, and now amy really enjoying painting in grayscale and then colorizing after, so this helps clarify a few things I didn't know about but was curious to find out... like the difference between OPACITY and FILL in the layers menu!
I agree with the other critiques, though that spelling and grammar could make the tut really exceptional... even though you're Dutch, I'm sure you can pass spell check over your text to clean up some of the mistakes... it won't catch everything, like learn/teach, but it'll catch things like "falue"...
As for the pixel size, I don't think it needs to be so dense, although the detail is appreciated, it's really more appropriate for print, not online reading. Most screens are only 72 dpi, so unless we download and zoom waaay in, the detail is lost anyway. So for layout my biggest suggestion for what it's worth is lower the dpi and pixel count, up the font size to make it more readable
Anyway, it's a great tutorial, hope you take our critiques as encouragement and keep up the great work educating the DA masses!!

Thank you very much , glad you learned a thing or 2
I know my spelling isn't very well (in dutch either to be honest), i will try to clean things up in new tutorials
As for the pixels, I posted the image before Deviantart used a new kind of 'shrink image' full view. Which is really annoying. As well as the size of the file, i wasn't aware that Deviantart has a image size maximum of 10.000x10.000 pixels. So, lazy as I was, I made simple edit to make it present able.
I already advised in the description that you should download it, because most computer screens aren't big enough to screen the entire picture.
Thank you very much for the comment, and i am glad i could help .

I agree with *Eil 's critique in that the tutorial being split up in 3 parts, or better yet, just one long scroll-down session would've been better.
Some other things Id like to point out: I feel that the font is way too small, and nearly unreadable althrough the entire tutorial.
Another thing that I would've preferred is if you enlarged the more informative parts. For instance, the names of the different overlay functions and the values of (for instance) the hue/saturation/lightness box are unreadable, and this trend continues on in the entire tutorial.
Other than that, I do think this tutorial is very helpful, and I don't think I've seen another tutorial on dA about Photoshop's layer functions.

My original idea was making one big scroll down, but dA doesn't allow images bigger than 10.000x10.000 pixels.
It's the new dA full-view size thingy. It sizes to the size of your screen. Click on Download to get the original image.
Hope it will help

I didn't know the first thing. DA, damn you
And the second thing... well, it was never an issue for me until now, so I guess I had forgotten it. I'll download the tutorial, thanks

Fantastic tutorial, so many many thanks. I will not repeat those comments in the critique below as I agree with them and they are only minor. If I can add only one of my own, that is it would be great to have a link to your original greyscale image as a reference piece to practice on to achieve the same fantastic results. Once again Many thanks

[link] open it in photoshop, press ctrl(cmd)+shift+U and its grey scaled. The textures are still one it and the contrast my be slightly stronger but it would do the trick

Thank you so much for sharing!
I found this extremely helpful, and for a long time I didn't know the difference between all the different layers and how to use them. I really loved how well you explained everything (especially since English is not your first language).
Now I can use my Photoshop with a much better understanding of these very important tools.
Thank you again
