Excellent Tutorial. I don't use Photoshop, but GIMP but nevertheless your tutorial has certainly given me some things to think and try.

I intend to, I may even be brave and share the results if I like what I manage to produce.

This is pretty cool! Thanks for making such a thorough tut, and congrats on the DD!

The "can you do this with GIMP?" question made me explore GIMP a little more just now, so I learned a bit more how filters can work together and also got a fair bit of inspiration from that. I'll be sure to play around with the program more often and see how I can make my plain art more interesting. So really, thanks!

It was! ^^ Thanks!

By the way, for those asking if you can do something like this in GIMP, I answered yes to it here , albeit vaguely since I'm not too seasoned of a user yet.

zummerfish In reply to SuperSarcosmic [2014-03-16 13:50:02 +0000 UTC]

well I do know that GIMP has essentially functions, but never had the need to actually use it so I don't know if it can be done EXACTLY like I described.

SuperSarcosmic In reply to zummerfish [2014-03-16 14:00:44 +0000 UTC]

The only thing that immediately comes to mind with the same name is Gaussian Blur. But yeah, the interface has different paths/names of things to get the same results. Thought it'd be helpful to say.

Is there a way to do that with Gimp?

zummerfish In reply to xNeonTabby [2014-03-16 11:37:44 +0000 UTC]

I don't have GIMP so no idea here

oh

SuperSarcosmic In reply to xNeonTabby [2014-03-15 11:33:50 +0000 UTC]

I don't usually use filters and am not a GIMP expert in any way, but a quick look around found Filters>Edge-Detect>Neon to be similar to the Glowing Edges filter. There's a Soft Glow filter, various blur filters, cloud-generating filters, desaturation tool, layer masks, and other things that you would need to do something similar.

So, even with my amateur knowledge of GIMP, I believe you can get similar results. You just need to get to know the program. :>
