Description Face study-Steve Parkhurst

Pencil on Strathmore 500 cold press illustration board
22” x 22”

Once in a while the best laid plans go off track. The background the very thing that inspired this drawing took over -it slowly overshadowed the portrait. There is enough power in this face, a contemplative man in his middle age, just like myself. Thanks Steve for sitting for this and for having the interesting features to give drama to this study. I worked about 30 hours on the background which was on the left but after making the hard decision to cut it off, it made sense.
Thank you all for you questions and comments

Armin, as a print from you, since the quality, I am sure, will be far superior.

Great work, I really love the expression and how much depth you achieved in the eyes. They show a feeling and they absolutely seem to focus on the viewer. Pulls you right in
And the rich darks in this drawing are just gorgeous.

I look at this drawing and am amazed by the time and dedication that must have been involved with it. As I draw more and more and am driven by the possibility of the outcome, I find myself spending more time, adding more detail, building layers, creating details, and most importantly capturing the essence of the subject. (My latest works have yet to be uploaded to DA.) I believe patience is something learned by the artist and that you have mastered it. Your works are the accumulation of all the fore mentioned. You're and inspiration to young artist such as myself, we have much to learn from you.

Thank you John, time is sure part of this type of work but it doesn't guaranty success my any means. Ive have spent many hour on works that in the end failed miserably.

how do you shade? pencils? tissue? anythig? I'm sitting here drawing and looking at your picture trying to learn from you.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

1nimra In reply to KimIsMissing [2011-08-24 13:27:37 +0000 UTC]

i don't shade in the traditional sense of blending with stumps tissue or other things, mostly i draw with a hard pencil over soft that seems to work for me.

This just proves that in a world over taken with 5,000$ cameras and digital editing, photo-shop, digital art and any other type of technology, traditional art can still "take the cake" and make people who are lost in a world of technical mayhem, stop for a moment and appreciate someone's true efforts in making something extravagant. Absolutely breath taking, my friend.

I'm still in awe... I think the right side (his left our right) is what kinda tells you that it's a drawing because of its softness. I will sit here and stare at the details for... a few hours. It's really amazing.

I'll tell you where I see the genius in this drawing. The shadow coming from the third white hair of the left eyebrow. Didn't need to be there, nobody would notice if it wasn't, but there it is. Brilliant!
