Description
Face study-Steve ParkhurstPencil on Strathmore 500 cold press illustration board
22β x 22β
Once in a while the best laid plans go off track. The background the very thing that inspired this drawing took over -it slowly overshadowed the portrait. There is enough power in this face, a contemplative man in his middle age, just like myself. Thanks Steve for sitting for this and for having the interesting features to give drama to this study. I worked about 30 hours on the background which was on the left but after making the hard decision to cut it off, it made sense.
Thank you all for you questions and comments

Armin, you are such an inspiration to us aspiring realists ... you show that there is something further to aim for, beyond the limits of merely reproducing a photograph.
On a more technical note; it's incredible how you incorporate both very high and low values into the skin on different parts of the forehead, but the transition is so smooth it looks incredibly natural.

Hi again. I was wondering if you could explain to a novice what you mean about the background inspiring the portrait? To me it looks like a "standard" simple, dark background. Forgive my ignorance but please keep in mind that I am a complete novice.

As usual incredible realism. May I ask what techniques you use? In the photos of your forrest drawing it looks like you are using a mechanical pencil, do you blend or use other methods or do you "just" lay down the graphite in exactly the right way from the the beginning? Either way you artwork is impressive, I just want to learn more.

i don't blend much when i do its with a hard pencil over soft, blending always made my work look muddy
thx

Utterly stunning! OMG, this is some of the best work I've seen on DevART, and that's saying a lot! I guess you don't need me to tell you you're extremely talented, but it's always nice to hear. Will definately keep an eye out for more of your work. You're my new model of aspiration.

Armin I've been following your work for quite some time now, and I try to learn from your work. But I've noticed that you're getting better with every new piece new piece. "Beyond the Pale (Drawing of Clint) was really amazing, but in my personal opinion, you raised the bar again. Would you agree?
