Face study-Steve ParkhurstPencil on Strathmore 500 cold press illustration board

Once in a while the best laid plans go off track. The background the very thing that inspired this drawing took over -it slowly overshadowed the portrait. There is enough power in this face, a contemplative man in his middle age, just like myself. Thanks Steve for sitting for this and for having the interesting features to give drama to this study. I worked about 30 hours on the background which was on the left but after making the hard decision to cut it off, it made sense.

Armin, I wouldn't know. I've seen this slump for quite some time now. Very little new and interesting work, not even the ever present celebs nor heated discussions about 'cheating' and 'waht is art and who defines it'. Same slump at Scribble Talk as well. I'm glad I'm here and can see good and interesting work and a very vibrant community. Thanks for nudging btw.

I've read your jornal about "what is art?" and having your own style.
To me a good answer is "Art is something that echoes in eternity"

If I can EVER achieve anything close to this, I'll die happy. The attention to detail in every inch of this is marvelous! The lighting, the reflective light, all the different tones and values, its astounding. And the method you used to do this piece...working section by section rather than as a whole piece.I just don't understand how you did it without being afraid of something not being in the exactly right place and throwing the whold piece off. Just brilliant.

I didn't know it was possible, but you are still improving, Armin. Great job once again. I'm just wondering about all the details. The hairs for instance, do you make those up as you go or do you copy them exaclty from the reference?

I translate the patterns closely but individual hairs I move around to make them interesting, you donβt see this on a reference photo so itβs my imagination and knowledge that I tap into, thank you for your good words
