Description
Face study-Steve ParkhurstPencil on Strathmore 500 cold press illustration board
22β x 22β
Once in a while the best laid plans go off track. The background the very thing that inspired this drawing took over -it slowly overshadowed the portrait. There is enough power in this face, a contemplative man in his middle age, just like myself. Thanks Steve for sitting for this and for having the interesting features to give drama to this study. I worked about 30 hours on the background which was on the left but after making the hard decision to cut it off, it made sense.
Thank you all for you questions and comments

I think the most time I've ever spent on a drawing is less than the amount of time it took for your left background @.@ This is crazy good....

I'm in awe. This is so excellent and powerful! I'm especially overwhelmed by his eyes as they not just look lifelike, but truly alive. Like he was really looking at me. Brilliant!

It's encouraging to see there are people who can put so much time, talent and dedication into their work. I wanted to write a lot, like how often traditional techniques get disregarded, or how the lack of patience gets the best of many (myself included), or how technology gets us lazy with picture tracing and whatnot... but I'm just at a loss for words. So, all I have to say is this:
This is not only beautiful, it's inspiring.

hey armin, why does it take you 350 hours to do this? Im sure you could build up layers on the face then go over with detail section by section , instead of building up the whole face section by section? Check out my Old lady drawing , only took about 12 hours

its a very nice drawing, this is its just my method of work, how long doesn't means squat some are just curious how long it takes

Hey , the old lady drawing is about half way done, I find that once the face is done I don't have the patience you have for doing the background / clothes. I only ask why does it take 350 hours because although the detail is extremely high it looks like it could take around 100 hours max. I guess I just want to see more of your work instead of like 3 pieces a year !
I would love to see a time lapse video of your next drawing armin, put that on youtube I guarantee you will get a million views!

Tom I have always drawn very very slowly, when I say 350 hours thatβs not always pencil in hand its sketching, planning, looking, living the journey. Yet it takes me weeks to draw a mouth, thatβs fact. As I said time means little its whatβs on the gallery wall that counts. If I would even think about shortcuts my work would be compromised and ill never do that. I had to do this very thing when I made a living doing commission work and it was a nightmareβ¦ never again. I really think you work is first class so whatever your doing its working for you.

Your right, its not the time that goes into it, its the final piece on the gallery wall. Some artists I have seen spend 3 years on one piece ! 350 hours including the planning, sketching etc actually seems reasonable. I have finished that old lady drawing now take a look in my gallery to see the final piece. I gave up on the clothing couldn't get it right Is the Steve Parkhurst a commission, or just to sell in the future?
Tom

@Slippy88
nothing against your old lady drawning, it's really great work, but this drawning has lot more details and is ways better shaded, maybe that's the reason that it took so long!
again, your drawning is awesome too ! by the way, who cares about time when the result rocks ?

I hope your art and others alike continue to be praised. No one can truly appreciate this if they think that what took someone 350 hours to draw they can capture in 35 seconds with a camera. What you did seems inhumanly possibly, but you have proven nothing is impossible!
