Description
Face study-Steve ParkhurstPencil on Strathmore 500 cold press illustration board
22β x 22β
Once in a while the best laid plans go off track. The background the very thing that inspired this drawing took over -it slowly overshadowed the portrait. There is enough power in this face, a contemplative man in his middle age, just like myself. Thanks Steve for sitting for this and for having the interesting features to give drama to this study. I worked about 30 hours on the background which was on the left but after making the hard decision to cut it off, it made sense.
Thank you all for you questions and comments

Armin, splendid, splendid, splendid.
I should not have gone to bes so early. I had checked last night to see if the final version was posted but at that time not as yet. Now I wake up and find that soooooooooooooooooooooooooo many lucky people had seen this already. I agree fully with your decision to let the portrait stand by itself. Very, very, very much presence. I find it interesting additionally to see how much the face changed with the adding of the final parts.
Now all you have to do is to post a 'monster hi-res' version of this work for all of us to study how you mastered to get the finest details. ))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))
So now all we can do is sit back, enjoy this work and wait for your next masterpiece. You are such a master of graphite!!!!!!!

Wait, did you use a photo reference? I have absolutely no idea how you could make it this detailed without one. And Good Lord.... 350 hours.

This is SOOO good! Are you sure it's not just a photo? I'm especially impressed by the beard. White hair is so hard to draw, and white beard is even harder. This inspired me!
