Description “Monolithic”

Pencil on Illustration Board 30” x 40”

To see each element a little closer check the earlier wips.

This drawing is in the same realm but not a sequel to “fragile” a drawing I had on DA a while ago. There are big differences here and some similarities as well. The crux of the concept is aging and dealing with the knowledge of your own mortality. The two eyes are my step-fathers and my real fathers both have looked death square in the eye in the last year. Apart form there influence on me and the deep respect I have for each of them, they also represent an end of a journey, life’s journey. Myself represented in the center square is venerable, scared and helpless to affect time and what’s coming. The plumb bob symbolizes a pendulum (time) and strengthens the monolith. The bulb, a container of light now ruined and smashed but still idolized on its altar, its monolith. This gives some clues to my thought process and interest in symbolism some personal some universal. The rest, the sky, the storm, water and the outlined platform left with mostly negatives space strengthens the feel and tensions. I am revealing more then I usually feel comfortable with, I don’t want to take the mystery out of it so this is all I well say about this drawing, as far as meaning.
Next it’s off to do a rare commission I am extremely excited about it for is of a very special friend, I will do it as a wip I hope you check it out.

Thanks all for looking

Absolutely stunning work, it's beauty is compounded by the artist's emotional input.

I nearly cried upon viewing this piece. Something about the shards of glass, and the perfection of the eyes invoked a sense of sadness. I don't mean perfection it a technical sense, although it's mind-boggling, I was referring more to the depth of emotion in them. They aren't just eyes, they're eyes which present a lifetime of experience in them, and you've captured that in a way I've never seen before.

Bravo. Although I love art, it does not often create such strong feelings. You've done a brilliant job.

my work isnt made up of technical flexing and blatant symbolism. + symetrical composition.

and dont forget the dusty wasteland in the background. the continental abyss. talk about drama.

youre replacing an essay in this piece, and essays are for writers.

“my work isnt made up of technical flexing” your right on there!

“and blatant symbolism”, its blatant only because I let the cat out of the symbolistic bag and that’s to teach how personal symbols are worked up, some here find that interesting in a gallery, oops you might not be in one…..sorry, its just the art work standing alone. Your symbols: eyes like on a butchers slab, lets not be the Marilyn Manson of art, that really cliché and trite, oh your so dark…………………lol

“+ symetrical composition.” You got me…after about 150 years of asymmetry, I want to experiment with symmetry again, the old predictable, college boy designs bore the shit out me. There is symmetrical and asymmetrical, so what’s the problem?

“don’t forget the dusty wasteland in the background. the continental abyss. talk about drama.” That is your interpretation, your baggage not mine. Looks like you my friend have a very sallow imagination, damn cant you see more than that, take a look around you, look at others work at DA you might learn something Ezra…I doubt it.

”you’re replacing an essay in this piece, and essays are for writers” Art has always told a story, a story as simple as minimalism or as complex as High Rococo. I sure am not going to fane apologetic for using my thought process.

In the end Ezra we will never see eye to eye, I take that back. I like your work I don’t deny it, I even fav’d a few. What bothers me is your pseudo Art Speak babble, go to any art school you’ll find two types, the ones that do art and the ones that talk art, where do you fit in Ezra? The crap you toss I already heard when the only art you where making was in your dydees, get real.

I think you've gotten very used to compliments.

You need to put some life in your work, stop hiding behind this left brain bullshit.
There is no formula to this stuff sir, and you keep givin er like there is.

And you have to understand that not everyone likes your work.

Come on Ezra, we both know that we have two hemispheres of the brain, to use in tandem, use the tools available to you, feelings and facts, it’s about intellectual balance. There is a full circle on intellect, conscious, subconscious and super conscious.

Your kidding not everyone likes my work? gee I guess ill just quit and take up the flute. Come on that’s not what it’s about, I would rather have you flame the shit out of my work then ignore it…. like it, hate it just don’t walk by it.

Peace my friend keep the fire burning

You know when you see people in New Orleans drowning in shit, art is rather insignificant. Any way you make me think you always have, and again your father is one hell of a good-looking guy!

art can be a catalyst for change, or a support for conservatism. Art has much to do with what happened in New Orleans.

it IS a plumb bob, lol (looked at that part for a while before reading your comment on it)...Anywho, I love this one..very powerful, very beautiful. Your rendering on the broken lightbulb blows me away, as it did in the "fragile" drawings.

I am in no place to offer a critique compared to your skill, but the figure of you in the middle box seems a bit...stylized compared to the eyes on the left and right. the detail is beautiful, but maybe the reason it looks different is because the eye on the figure might be a bit too large? Maybe it's just the "white" of the eye is too white, especially considering how much of the shadow cast from the arm would affect it? who knows, I could be totally wrong... Then again, that could also be a help in relaying the feeling of vulnerablilty-the worried look, I guess...lovely work, though.

I might appear that way in the screen as well, it such a large drawing when reduced to this small the white areas kind of pop out at you in an unusual way, on the original it’s a little softer and more subtle, thank you for your observation.
