Description
“Waxing & Waning”Pencil on Illustration board
Image size 22” x 30” after framing 34” x 42”
This is actually a two part project the drawing which is shown here completed, and a forthcoming, constructed frame will heighten the feel of this drawing. The frame which is a wood construction, painted and given the illusion of weathered, rusted steal will be completed within the next few weeks.
Waxing & Waning. Life itself is a continuum of birth and death, something that was made very clear when my mother passed away during this drawing. At the hospital in the waiting room as I sat in grief, a family awaited the birth of a child to their daughter, laughter and pride filled the room as I sat choking down my tears.
Waxing & Waning relates to a series of drawings called “neo-fossil” that I have been working on for some ten years. This drawing was conceived and started way before my mother’s brief illness but it turned out to be very fitting. There is so much symbolism here that I don’t want to divulge, I am more interested to how it’s translated by others then what inspired me to draw this. Making art is always a journey and the destination only becomes clear when the viewer finds truth with their own unique interpretation.
Thanks for looking
Armin

Hey Armin,
As usual, nothing better out there. Peace to you and your family. Just found out a few weeks ago my younger brother has brain cancer. Don't have that loss yet, but can feel it.
Thanks for your work. Inspires us all.
Sincerely,
Dragon "Keith" Huntr

Ok, Armin, this is the second time I'm trying to write a message here....Sometimes I hate computers, especially my laptop! Anyway, let's hope THIS message can get posted before my lovely PC kicks it off!
Well, seeing as my laptop removed my message JUST as I finished it last night, I've had PLENTY of time to mull over this newest piece of yours! Which is probably a good thing because this latest is definitely thought provoking! This is what I love most about "Waxing and Waning" - no matter how many times I look at it, I find something new and discover more truth. You once told me:
"When art hangs on the wall its out of your hands, you did your gig, now it's up to the viewers translation and peoples own baggage that becomes the "truth" for the short time its being viewed. Personally I love that, it tells me my work has its own life and it confirms I'm not an illustrator."
You have done that with this piece, and I sincerely mean that! How is it possible that an abstract, surrealistic drawing can open up a can of worms in me is alarming! Me - the one who used to emphatically hate abstract work! Thank goodness I'm long past the narrowminded view I used to have years ago and love abstract and surrealism now. But it still amazed me how this piece truly did open up a can of worms, showing me my own baggage. Now, I'm not going to share what that baggage is, mind you, because baggage is meant to be sealed!
LOL! But I thought I'd let you know that you certainly did your job here.
On another note, though, I can see the symbolism of this piece and have enjoyed interpreting it. Even though each person will interpret it differently, I don't see a "wrong" interpretation from this, so it can certainly reach everyone. Some people see roots holding up the pedestal. I see sticks. These sticks look eerily like people to me - people of the past holding up the pedestal, the present. These people are gone, but they still live (the leaf). They live on in each one of us, holding us up, making us who we are today. The skull is the present to me. It is large and solid, the structure of our bodies. (Without our skeletons we can not stand.) The present is the most visible, which is why it is the focal point (to me). Then the circle of rock and earthen ware above the skull meaning the future, yet it is being unearthed by those ahead of us, seeing how we lived years after we are gone, which then brings us back to the past ones behind us, holding us up......The cycle of life. The circles and moons show time (many moons ago, the passing of the moon, etc) and the continuity of time is never-ending. The circle of life continues, making us who we are.
Perhaps I analize things too much, but this is what I see when I look at this, yet I always see more when I come back and look at it later. Something new is unearthed and shown to me each time, almost making this piece a living and breathing work, if that makes sense. This is truly inspiring, Armin! You've certainly created a piece of art! But I've come to expect that from you, you know. Your desires and drive have certainly paid off!
This has to be so impressive when seen in it's actual size! I would love to see it! I certainly look forward to seeing the "frame" you will add to this because I know it will only enhance what you have already done!

I'm glad you liked my description! And here I thought my words were hard to follow seeing as I had a hard time trying to explain my thoughts! I'm honored that you wanted to post that on your website.
It ought to be great fun talking art with you! I'm sure others would rather bury their heads in sand first though! My husband will have a grand time sitting back and just listening as us crazy artists chat. I can hardly wait to see good ole Michigan! Problem is - I won't want to leave it!

I love the symbolism in your works, there's so much to interpret no matter how many times you look at a piece like this. And as always, your detail work is masterful! it's incredible how much depth you can give something with only white, black and gray. I'm sorry to hear about your mother.. I hope that with the love of friends and family, and an outlet such as art to keep you going, the pain of her death will lessen some.

Well, I guess the most apparent symbolism of your theme is the skull of a dead animal with life sprouting up right under its place in the vines... and the skull breaking the circle of life...

The wheels spin while things emerge from the earth and return to the earth. That was my immediate response to this piece. Some of the circular elements seem to have a strong resemblance to planets and the way that they move. A dialogue between macros and microns, or something of that nature.
I also have to agree with a previous poster who mentioned the idea of the Church-like shape of the drawing. It resembles an altarpiece. But, really those pieces always gave me the impression that they were projecting upward, or directing our eyes that way.
Best wishes,
~MG

I'm sorry to hear about your Mother, dear Nimra. Just before reading your comment on this drawing, I was stunned once more by your inimitable way of mixing the organic and the mineral.
And, for this sentence : "Making art is always a journey and the destination only becomes clear when the viewer finds truth with their own unique interpretation." I thank you.

So sorry for your loss Armin.
There is nothing about your technique in pencil work that I can comment on, I wouldn't know where to start , but looking at the picture as a whole the one thing that stands out the most and really grabs my attention is that leaf, to me it symbolises hope and athough nothing else in your drawing shows obvious life, that one leaf does.
