Description “Waxing & Waning”
Pencil on Illustration board

Image size 22” x 30” after framing 34” x 42”

This is actually a two part project the drawing which is shown here completed, and a forthcoming, constructed frame will heighten the feel of this drawing. The frame which is a wood construction, painted and given the illusion of weathered, rusted steal will be completed within the next few weeks.

Waxing & Waning. Life itself is a continuum of birth and death, something that was made very clear when my mother passed away during this drawing. At the hospital in the waiting room as I sat in grief, a family awaited the birth of a child to their daughter, laughter and pride filled the room as I sat choking down my tears.

Waxing & Waning relates to a series of drawings called “neo-fossil” that I have been working on for some ten years. This drawing was conceived and started way before my mother’s brief illness but it turned out to be very fitting. There is so much symbolism here that I don’t want to divulge, I am more interested to how it’s translated by others then what inspired me to draw this. Making art is always a journey and the destination only becomes clear when the viewer finds truth with their own unique interpretation.

Thanks for looking

as it is with all your drawings. it's simply breathtaking. wonderful.
at the same time it shows sadness and decay. you have written why it means something special to you. and you should know that it has a special meaning to each spectator also. but the common understanding is surely the endless ring of birth and death. some will see more positive in it, some will point at the negative sides.
and that's the best one could say about any artwork. congrats!

Well...let's start by stating the obvious shall we? Technically, this is a very stunning piece...you are truely gifted when it comes to working with graphite and it really shows in the way you handled the various textures incorporated in this drawing.

The overall composition is excellent as well. I really like the use of the circles, they really express the concept of continuity that you talked about in your description.

What strikes me the most about this piece though, is the obvious amount of sentiment behind it. Of course, I'll never know exactly what this work means to you, and what everything within it is meant to symbolize...I don't know what you're feeling right now...of course, having lost loved ones myself, I can relate, but each person has his own unique perceptions and reactions so I won't try guessing...but I do know that the way everything about this piece comes together really speaks to me.

It's beautiful.

I look forward to seeing the framed version.

Thank you Junyi ,when doing a drawing like the portrait of Frank Rugani symbolism as such is very small, I try to get the “idea” across by lighting, textures, the pose, the eye contact, and the composition. This is quite different and much more direct then a conceptual piece like “Waxing and Waning”. This work is not about the obvious, it challenges the viewer and demands a commitment of deciphering the visual dialog. I feel this type of work is a collaboration of artist and viewer. In this work there are universal symbols and very personal symbols, obvious mingling with the very vague. These can be translated in many ways and there are no wrong conclusions. Even when someone get nothing out of it, that’s their truth and the truth and failure of the work at that given point. In no way do I try or am I interested in a direct statement with this type of work, I am not illustrating a specific idea but hidden feeling that come out both directly and subconsciously. I can give hints but then it just becomes a puzzle and that’s differs from my concept as well. In the end these works are about an idea and a feelings masquerading within abstract symbolism.

Michael you are right-on with Giger! I love his work, but the beauty of organic and mechanical forms and the union of opposites get lost within the “in your face shock factor”. Now that’s not taking anything away from him for that’s what I think he is after, and he does it so extremely well. Bones, machines, metamorphoses, nature taking back is what I find interesting, and to some existent I have been influenced by Giger, but more as an undercurrent in my works but not the main thrust. Fossils themselves have had just as much of an influence, they are incredibly beautiful.

oh wow, im so happy!!!! i can see another one of your works.. awe inspring, well, inspiring in general. !!
the thing i liek abotu your work is that you always have a reason, a purpose for doing it. very few people other than yourslef on here do... thas why you find people with the description of their drawing as '...'. but its nice to see some feeling behind what you do, and to me that makes it stand out from everything else here.
thank you so much for letting us see it xxx

I noticed the shape in which you planned this piece out in; a shape that's usually associated with a Churches stained glass work. It gives more meaning to the overall theme of Waxing and Waning. I always loved your work with textures, as I think that's one of the greatest things you do to make your artwork become incredible. We are all born and die on Mother Natures Earth.
