I'd like to point out to people reading this, i made this tutorial a couple of years a go, it's really old by now and is to be followed with a grain of salt. My methods have changed since this tutorial and it's good only if you're starting out and wanting to learn the very basics because there are some methods here I realize now that can develop into bad habits. So once you've gotten a hang of things, please explore new methods of drawing/painting! Don't limit yourself!

The Ultimatum : D The Mother of all tutorials. Ahaha;; I did this half a year ago and decided to reupload it here. My prized tutorial, just had to reupload it. ; 3 ; <3

I'm kind of a noob to SAI... may I ask what canvas size you use? All of my stuff comes out pixelly : /

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

4th-reset In reply to ClarenceOfTheDark [2012-09-20 06:51:28 +0000 UTC]

Hmm... The canvas sizes I use vary depending on how big the picture I want to be o A o
Are you zoomed in too close? 100% is the normal size. If it's not the case check if you're using the Binary Tool or not. Binary draws completely in pixels. o v o

ClarenceOfTheDark In reply to 4th-reset [2012-09-20 22:41:52 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I'd say my canvas size has been waaay too tiny that, and my resolution hasn't been so fabulous. I'll probably end up using vector layers cuz my hand's so shaky. One last question and I'll get off your back; What tool do you use to blend out the shading? I usually cel shade for fear that blending using the wrong tool will make it look plasticy or hazy or some such

4th-reset In reply to ClarenceOfTheDark [2012-09-21 06:51:40 +0000 UTC]

I use the usual Blur tool but it's really powerful in SAI compared to photoshop so you'll have to use it sparingly, or you can use the water tool, experiment and play around~

ClarenceOfTheDark In reply to 4th-reset [2012-09-22 14:56:02 +0000 UTC]

I'll be sure to do that once I get a new tablet, I'm usually afraid to play around for fear that I'll do something I can't fix, but I should try to get over that anyway Thanks for all of the useful info and great tutorial ^^

4th-reset In reply to ClarenceOfTheDark [2012-09-23 08:24:16 +0000 UTC]

I know that feel But don't worry about experimenting, and try saving at various stages of your art so you can come back to it~ /o/
Just keep playing around til you find something you're comfortable with hoho~ and it's fun~ * - * <3

I think the horns(?) on that guy`s head are like another character`s horn in black rock shooter.
But anyway they are both cool .

I was actually inspired by Ao no exorcist that time about demons and stuff, but now that you've pointed it out it does resemble BRS.
Thanks either way

This is probably the best tutorial I've seen! You also made it really easy to undertand, so thanks a lot! ^^ By the way, do you have any tutorials on backgrounds?

Ahhh~ thank you so much! > A < I'm glad it's easy to understand ahaha orz;

And I'm sorry I don't ; A ; I'm actually really really bad at backgrounds too and I can't draw them at all, I actually need a few good background tutorials myself as my backgrounds are always really bad orz;

Dame-Hailey In reply to ??? [2012-07-06 02:56:18 +0000 UTC]

This is the best tutorial I have ever seen, you make it so clear for people to understand. Thank you for making this. I'm new to sai and digital art all together >.< I'm much more traditional. Is there a way to take a picture drawn traditionally and then make a line art out of it so it doesn't look like crap? I've tried and it always ends up so poorly .<; Do you have any suggestions?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

4th-reset In reply to Dame-Hailey [2012-07-06 16:37:17 +0000 UTC]

Ahhhh thank you so much but i'm also still learning ahaha kasdlajksd ; 3 ; <3

Well the only piece of advice I can offer you is to use tracing paper and ink the lines in with pen when you're happy with your lines, to scan your pictures in and attempt to do lineart in paint tool sai so you can keep erasing it without potentially destroying your picture? ; 3 ; Then reprint and colour..?

Or do like I do and ink them in reallyreallyreallyreally slowly I'm sorry i'm not so good with traditional works.

Dame-Hailey In reply to 4th-reset [2012-07-06 17:37:43 +0000 UTC]

Thank you :3 I'll try it later today actually ^^ I cannot wait to see what happens, lol. I'll draw something small so my first try ^^

Usagi-Elric [2012-06-29 12:26:15 +0000 UTC]

how did you get the texture thing for the pants onto a new layer? i tried and it just opened it in a new canvas

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

4th-reset In reply to Usagi-Elric [2012-06-30 16:15:08 +0000 UTC]

Ah~ when you have your two canvasses, minimize them both so they're side by side. Make sure you're on your texture canvas, now go to your layers. Click on your texture layer and drag into onto your other canvas where your picture is. It will move it to your picture as a layer. ^^ Hope it helps

yeah, but your tut helped a lot XD But I have a question: how do you color? ;3; I use the magic wand tool, but sometimes it's a bitch, so how do you color in things?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

4th-reset In reply to RubyRedOrca [2012-05-04 13:06:18 +0000 UTC]

I use the magic wand tool and the bucket tool. Then I deselect everything and look for leaks or holes in the colouring and fix them up. ; v ;
but it's not really reliable since you can miss a few leaks and only notice them later.
Usually people manually colour it in withthe pen/brush tool but i'm usually too lazy so don't follow my example orz;

RubyRedOrca In reply to 4th-reset [2012-05-04 21:04:37 +0000 UTC]

Omg, me too XD We're both too lazy to color it like a picture ;3;

Since the glowy effects are quite easy I'll probably end up being long-winded and adding all sorts of other stuff in it. But I'll see what I can do. ^^/ <3
