Description
Download the ZIP file for an MP4 video demonstration. This demo demonstrates how I create pony eyes. I do not promise that this is the best or only way to do it. It is simply the way I do it.
For the purposes of this demo, a screenshot reference is used so you can see the intended final outcome as I create each part. The exact same steps are used when drawing an eye that is not traced.
I prefer the clipping path method as it not destructive to paths and it allows me reuse simply by copying and pasting the clipping path into new images. If I want to adjust the eye, I need only release the clip, move the object and re-apply the clip.
There are some alternative methods. Some people use path operations to line up the parts of the eye. This method destroys the original path. Another method is to place the 'head' above the 'eye' in the Z-order / layers. This method also works, but it is not acceptable to me as I cannot reuse the eye shape.
Further notes:
- If you are drawing a pony suffering turmoil or a pony with eyeshadow (e.g. Luna or Nightmare), use one clipping path for both the eye and the eyelid.
- Cadance and Celestia are good to practice on as they have an outline that completely borders the eye.
- This demo uses Luna, who has pointy eyes. If you have a pony with round eyes, use an ellipsis to make the clipping path, not the pen. Use Object to Path on the ellipsis when you're finished to get a path. This is optional, but it does allow you to tweak it with the Node tool.
- You can set Inkscape to display clipping paths applied to an object. By default, clipping paths are displayed in green (masks are displayed in blue and the path in red).
- I use this method in almost every single image, so you can reference almost any SVG file to see how I did the eyes.

Thanks for your post. I will definitely be using these ideas and pondering more and more about what I am really doing right with the use of my YouTube video channel dedicated to some of the concerns you have mentioned. I'm also considering the actual way it would be if I launched a blog discussing a number of the same issues you've dealt with here. Thank you for showing me something so obvious. I used to be blinded from it. Your post has really made an impact on the way I think about my own work and ideas too. click here to know more about clipping path.
