Description
People nowadays care so much about content, art design and graphics that Street Fighter V, DmC: Devil May CryΒ and any HD remake got criticized and nobody gives a crap about the gameplay anymore.Gameplay is more important, graphics and content are an optional bonus. No matter how complete or incomplete a game looks like. Games like Sonic 06 and Sonic Boom are the REAL incomplete games, because the gameplay was poor and it was rushed, unlike Street Fighter V, who has a complete gameplay, no glitches, but people criticize it for the lack of content where I just wanna facepalm so harder. I know, it's the same thing with Killer Instinct, although after three seasons, it felt complete.
Again, Gameplay is the MOST IMPORTANT thing in videogames, whether it looks incomplete or not. I blame Mariotehplumber and other people who started this "Gameplay is not the most important in gaming" mindset.
Oh and before you get annoyed, I find the gameplay of Killer Instinct and King of Fighters XIV as badass as every Street Fighter game.

You again?
Sure, but if all a game has going for it is the ability to play it, it really doesn't help much. If a game has a good story, it could help encourage players to press on to see it further develop. Same applies to a decent art style.

Well remember this. We're not saying gameplay is the ONLY important thing in a videogame. We're saying it's the MOST important. Yes, everything else could help, but not much. let's say we have a shitty game with a good story for example. If the gameplay sucks (whether its unfinished, or has god awful controls) the story alone is not going to make it a good game. The same applies with graphics and music. Sonic 06, despite it's wonderful soundtrack, is critically panned as one of the worst games of all time. The soundtrack didn't save that game from getting the reputation it got.

Oh sure, the next thing your going to tell me that Mario has sucked since 1985 because it has gameplay as it's only forte to.
I can't say anything about this game since I've never played it myself. But if the game itself sucks gameplay wise, why should I care about everything else. I don't know about you, but I'd rather not get frustrated because of stupid design choices or unfinished gameplay, just to see how a story folds out. (Especially if the story itself sucks.) Content only gets you so far kid.

It was a game released on an 8-Bit system in the mid-80s, a time when game development was still limited.
It's not about frustration, but rather appreciating qualities that help boost the adage that games are more than just mindless entertainment, but an art form. Simply being able to move around and interact is hardly an art form.

gameman5804 In reply to Channeleven [2016-11-15 23:14:10 +0000 UTC]
Still holds my point especially since people cared more about gameplay back then.
They've always been entertainment, and entertainment isn't art. Sure it can have artistic qualities, and I sure as hell would appreciate it. But any game developer would never forget that videogames are entertainment. If I'm not entertained, then all of the work that was put into the content will mean nothing and will be wasted. People will lose interest and may probably shut the game off and may trade it in.

So consoles were able to make cutting edge graphics and visual storylines back in the 80s?
Then I guess we could hold that against all forms of media. I could tell that whoever you move a player, you'd just burst into laughter. Just because there're people who believe that gameplay is all that really matters, it doesn't automatically make it right. I'm just saying.

Content wasn't the focus back then. That's why game developers were focused on the gameplay at the time.
And there's more to gameplay than just moving a player around. The amount of gameplay genres can no doubt speak for themselves. Just saying.

So... you agree with my point that developers didn't have the capability to go beyond 8-bit graphics back in the 80s? Gameplay was the focus because they couldn't do anything past that back then. Remember, video games were still in a state of development in the 80s.
And what do those genres have? Moving around, shooting stuff, interacting? That's about it, and those genres you speak of contain derivatives of those three attributes. I could see you as a diehard fan of Call of Duty because you're trying so hard to make it seem like gameplay is more than what it is.

I'm not talking about technical limitations. Gameplay still plays a prominent role in videogames regardless of how much content you put in. Stop treating videogames as if they're art (because they're not) and treat them like actual entertainment. They've always been classified as entertainment and they always will be. (No matter how much videogames have evolved over the years). They're called "videogames" for a reason you know.
And just a side note: I hate Call of Rehash.

It's ironic that you hate Call of Duty, yet you're putting all of the importance of gaming onto gameplay, which is all Call of Duty has.
So you're against games trying to employ a higher sense of creativity, hence providing diversity amongst said games? I would love to live in your limited world, but I believe in bringing creativity to anything.

I never said it was the ONLY thing that mattered. I said it's the MOST important!
Look up ONLY and MOST in the dictionary.
And I said gameplay is the main component that separates videogames from books and movies. Why do you think that you have the controller? If we focused on content alone, then what's the point of making a videogame to begin with? I don't think I need actual proof when it's common knowledge.

Now now, use your inside voice.
You say it's the most important, and in doing so, you ignore other factors that are just starting to become important. Hence, you're focusing too much on the aspect of gameplay.
Just because gameplay is utilized to make games differentiate from film and literature, does that mean it has to be limited to just gameplay? Just so then you could push the ludicrous idea that video games are nothing more than a lesser boob tube?
I do, your attempts at evoking superiority are just too empty.
