Description This is my second POWER GIRL cover. As with the first one, these are variants; the book is actually being drawn by Amanda Conner and she rightfully gets the main cover.

This is one of those exercises in creativity to get the job done. The end of February was a tad nightmarish; being the shortest month of the year, I was closing on a house, and I had MegaCon to head off to the day after closing.

I needed to hand in a Power Girl cover before I left, and I needed it to look decent. There wasn't time for anything elaborate or full of backgrounds. One option is to do a rougher cover like the one I did for CATWOMAN 79. Looser inks, less rendering, but still throwing in a background full of details.

The other option is: do something designy and graphic. All I had time for was a nice shot of her standing there, so I thought it'd be eye-catching of the parts of her that are lit by direct lighting are kind of washed out, but she is standing in the shade of her own logo. My art director kinda liked the idea, so the end was result this quickie.

17" X 21" pencil & ink on Strathmore series 300 3-ply illustration board, with digital colors in Photoshop CS2.

She looks spectacular!!

I like how you've incorporated the logo on both covers, Adam. Are you planning on making the logo an integral part of the design for the entire series?

btw: Congrats on closing on the new home!

Lovely. Have you noticed that big hole in her costume though? If I was a super villain, and I'm not going to commit to saying if I am or not, then I would probably use that hole...if I grappled with her.

Better to just go naked, like me. Nothing to grab onto.

And plans on/for the background?

Also...are you going to continue doing the PeeGee ongoing covers (or is it just for the first arc)?

This is the final version, and I'm not sure yet how many Power Girl covers I'm doing. I don't want it to affect my other work.

is there ever a possibility that you could make a demonstration of how you color?

Ive heard from somewhere that you use the selection tool followed by a feather radius to fill in your color?

Ive been experimenting with that technique recently

btw great piece the simplicity and design works well and the dark light across her upper body gives an impression that shes being blocked out by detail that doesn't exist ^_^

are you the creator of powergirl?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

AdamHughes In reply to sonnet-contempo [2009-03-04 20:30:26 +0000 UTC]

No, she was created by writer Gerry Conway in 1976!

sleming In reply to sonnet-contempo [2009-03-04 09:26:01 +0000 UTC]

Mr. Hughes is nowhere near that old.

I believe that Power Girl was created by Gerry Conway and the oldest published art is a concept sketch done by Ric Estrada. Her first appearance in an actual comic was All Star Comics #58 published in Feb. 1976. I remember buying it at a U-Totem convenience store. It was written by Gerry Conway and the art credits are listed as Ric Estrada and Wally Wood. To me the art really looked more like Wally Wood's work.

No problem, you're welcome.

Oh, I forgot to mention that the cover art was signed by somebody named Grell. Since Mike Grell was the only artist I know of with that last name that worked for DC in the seventies, I suppose it's probably him.

to be honest i don't like the shadow. it's a cool effect and concept, but i'd like to see the girl in full effect :] (although the shadow does hug the contours of her boobs nicely).

Unfortunate expression. My english is lame, i know :/
By "buttocks" i meant hips.
I know it's your style to draw women with narrow hips and that's allright. Licentia poetica. I just preffer them bigger.
But i don't want it to sound bad. I love your work!

Good gods, Adam, this is just... WOW! I love the effect that shadow has, and once I saw the close up of her face in the second look, those eyes are really incredible.
She's got this great playful but powerful expression. Nicely done.

That's hot Adam!!
I mean in a "nice piece of art kinda way" not in the sense that I think a fictional 2-dimensional woman is hot. lol

I think that's a first for me.. to see the Title cause a shadow on the character/illustration of the cover? never seen that before. Works out well the way you handled portion kind of painterly and others more graphic with the lighting.

Yeah, you're still the best Power Girl cover artist Adam, i don't really like the fact that some of her white top is being lost into the backgroud even though i like how your outlines are soft or none existent, i imagine its to pull attention to the face... Poor Power Girl!
