Description Here's four of the design sheets I did for Sideshow, to help the sculpting process along. Just sketches from my sketchbook, nothing fancy.

The first one, in the upper left, was done at the Sideshow offices/studios, during a brainstorming session for a bumch of ideas. I produced the rest over the next few months as sculptor Tim Miller went about making three-dimensional fabulosity appear.

I like the doodle of the size comparison between Jennifer Walters and her alter-ego, done mainly to show Tim what I was thinking of when I designed She-Hulks torn street clothes. I think some people draw the Hulk or She-Hulk in torn clothes that look like there's enough fabric to actually cover them, if the outfit wasn't in tatters. I was trying to illustrate to Tim that when Jen tranforms, she goes from something like 5'4" to 6'7". A small women's suit jacket would probably look like a childrens's vest on a gal as big as She-Hulk.

We had some slightly racier rips, tears, and bulges going on, originally. Marvel asked us to tone it down a tad. PRE-DISNEY Marvel.

Truly, we live in an age of wonders.

Since you mentioned it in the comments, I was wondering what you, as a professional, think the long-term effects of the Disney/Marvel merger will mean. Tim Townsend talked about it a bit over on his DA, saying he talked to Quesada and was assured that things were going to stay pretty much the same. Obviously, it's fairly old news, but I'm curious what your thoughts are.

I'm not sure.
I can imagine how it might go, down two or three different paths. But to actually predict? I have no idea. The wholw entertainment industry is in flux; none of the old, reliable rules seem to apply.

Different characters require different aproaches. Both Black & White Queens are dressed like dominatrixes (dominatrices?); She-Hulk is a different breed of cat when it comes to this pinup-style stuff.

That's cool that you put that much thought into it, rather than just being like "Hey, lady in torn clothes."

The comparison sketch is fabulous, especially when considering what would happen to her clothing. I'm not sure that a fitted skirt would end up that short after transforming, although I can imagine it would be split at the bottom on one side or the other. Nice tip about how a sleeve works, I never knew that for some reason.

Someone else mentioned about the bra being a bit unrealistic as well and while I agree, I can imagine it being more possible that the bra survives than the tailored clothing. Oh, and I'd think buttons on the waistband of her skirt would have been affected somewhat as well.

And now I'm probably overthinking the whole thing and should just say "I love it!"

Yeah. Marvel wouldn't let us do a realistic statue of this situation, which would be a nude.
You can only go as far as the client will let you.

Thanks for the kind words!

RhyssaFireheart In reply to AdamHughes [2009-11-25 03:36:13 +0000 UTC]

Bah, nude statues (or either gender) take all the fun out of imagination, IMO. Having the clothing partially torn like that but still decent is much more interesting.

/wanders off thinking about a few male superheroes with some strategically ripped clothes....

kinda seems like she-hulk is just a giant, sluttier version of her normal self. not that i'd put that past Disney, nor that i'd think comics fans wouldn't enjoy that, but is that really what this character is?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

AdamHughes In reply to zeromager [2009-11-25 04:07:39 +0000 UTC]

Yes!
I planned on the litho that accompanies this statue to have the whole story in the background of the piece...
... but in the interim, I used the idea for a Power Girl cover.
Basically, on her way to court, Jennifer Walters sees some 5-alarm disaster that needs her alter-ego's help.
She 'hulks out', ready to help the police and firefighters.... and realizes she forget to put her costume on first.

Amazing concepts! It's awesom how you can maintain such consistency with your characterization in all angles. The thought process behind the 'minifying' clothing instead of just tearing it to pieces in an interesting one I hadn't considered. Makes you wonder how much stretch Banner's purple pants really have!

Disney needs to learn that not everybody can be as rip-free as Snow White. She-Hulk needs to fight the man.

And that man is Walt Disney.
