Description
Someone just sent me a note asking "WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON RIGHT NOW!"Well, when someone 'asks' you a question in ALL CAPS and with an exclamation mark instead of a question mark, what can you do except take a screen capture of your desktop while you are working.
If you are the person who sent me said imperative request... here you go.
Hit Caps Lock off, and try some de-caf.

Wow, those tool boxes looks awfully small, I curious what kind of resolution you are running on your system. I am running 1600x1200, but the tool boxes don't look that small.
Thanks for sharing your work!

who taught you the channels technique?..i would like to give that a try, the look you get is fantastic. its a nice break from the heavy black ink lines you see in comics so often.

MitchGerads In reply to k9kennel [2009-02-23 15:21:06 +0000 UTC]
I think k9kennel means kind of the same thing i've been wondering.
I've been doing the color hold method of my own work straight from the book "DC Comics guide to coloring and lettering." Which works great, but the way that's set up you don't get to do any color holds till you've finished coloring everything else.
What's your method for color holds because it looks like you have a very clean way of applying them as you work.
I'll try to elaborate more if that question still doesn't make sense.

precisely, and by then you realize that without your line work your piece looks like crap.
But Adam's stuff is crisp. So when i saw the convo going about channels i wondered if that had something to do with it.

k9kennel In reply to AdamHughes [2009-02-23 15:23:21 +0000 UTC]
oh uhm,ok. You were talking about channels technically being grayscale images etc. So i was just wondering how you used them i.e channels to paint your pieces.
Maybe "channel technique" isn't the best way to describe it lol.

AdamHughes In reply to k9kennel [2009-02-23 16:01:23 +0000 UTC]
I DON'T.
I DON'T use Channels to paint my pieces.
That's what I try to tell everyone. Everyone is under the misapprehension that you can work in Channels or you can work in Layers. Thats like like saying "I like it better in the summer than in the countryside".
Even though it is possible to go into individual Channels and mess around with pixels, I don't. There's no need to.
There is no practical advantage to doing any of your art in Channels.
The ONLY reason I keep the Channels window even open is that you can save selections as Channels, for future re-use.
Also, I keep my Lineart as a Channel because it eats up less memory than having the Lineart be a Layer.
So.... no Channels! We color in Layers!

k9kennel In reply to AdamHughes [2009-02-23 20:36:10 +0000 UTC]
Ok. i gotch yuh.
So how then do you go about painting your line art so that your finished piece is not like a regular comic image where you can see the sharp contrast between the ink and the colored areas?
The only ink i see on your work is the outline....
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
AdamHughes In reply to k9kennel [2009-02-23 21:22:01 +0000 UTC]
Well, most people keep their Lineart as a Layer set on multiply. If that's how you work, then you can select the lines you want, delete them, and on a seperate layer (above your colors) that is set to normal, Fill the selection with the colors you want.
If you are like me, and you keep your Lineart in a spare Channel (because it eats up a little less memory), then you select the lines you want, delete them, and then go into your Layer and Fill with color.

By day I illustrate cereal characters for General Mills, Nabisco, etc. and asked around about our question k9. Here's how my mind was blown today. The great thing is PS is so "whatever works" when it comes down to it.
1. You have your original black lineart. Copy all of it.
2. Go to channels, create a new channel, paste.
3. Invert that channel.
4. (This is going to be on a Mac now) Now command click on that channel.
5. Switch back to your layers menu and create a new one, turn all the others off.
6. Fill with black.
7. Click on the transparency lock button, which will be the first of the lock buttons in your layers palette in PS.
8. Voila! From now on, on that layer whatever you color will just be in your linework.
Hope that helps!

Wonderful!
It still amazes me the great quality of your work, and how you get those shadings and fine hairlines using only a mouse.
Your talent is great indeed. I'm so glad you are very kind to share it with us all.
And is very nice of you to let us take a peek on your current work. Some artists may get very jelaous of their work in progress (maybe because it can reveal some of their secret craft).
But anyway, you share it with us. Is great to see a small preview of your next work, and I (like many others I'm sure-) feel veru happy to see this screenshot.
Will wait to see it completed. She's a great favorite of mine.
best wishes.
