Description
Someone just sent me a note asking "WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON RIGHT NOW!"Well, when someone 'asks' you a question in ALL CAPS and with an exclamation mark instead of a question mark, what can you do except take a screen capture of your desktop while you are working.
If you are the person who sent me said imperative request... here you go.
Hit Caps Lock off, and try some de-caf.

So, I've been wondering.
Do you sketch out the shading first, the smooth it out in Photoshop, and paint over it in overlay layers, or something like that?
I'm very interested in your process, given my lack of know-how.

This looks lovely Adam. Out of curiosity, do you shoot model ref. for this stuff ?

AdamHughes In reply to FlowComa [2009-02-22 22:37:44 +0000 UTC]
Sometimes! Sometimes I just grab a pic I find in a magazine or onlie and go "That's some good hair" or "I like the lighting on the elbow".
Whatever works!

ok cool thanks. I was curious how much ref u use, as your stuff is always spot-on with anatomy and lighting. Actually I was showing my work to Neal Adams recently(glutton for punishment that I am, haha) and he was going on about the importance of using photo ref. for everything, and he mentioned you as someone whos really got his stuff down pat.

THIS LOOKS LIKE 300DPI IS IT!
๐: 0 โฉ: 1
AdamHughes In reply to Jon-Wood [2009-02-22 22:39:58 +0000 UTC]
It's 500 dpi at print size (the dimensions that the final work will be reproduced at).

Jon-Wood In reply to AdamHughes [2009-02-23 01:48:35 +0000 UTC]
I thought print res was 300DPI. Is it higher for covers?

AdamHughes In reply to Jon-Wood [2009-03-04 01:43:12 +0000 UTC]
I believe it is; I color at a higher rez in case my art is repurposed later on, such as a poster or billboard.

I'm curious about your colouring method, everyone has their own, but I do wonder what your process is. Care to share? It seems you have some of the neatest work I've seen, especially in comparison to a lot of tablet work.
Pen and pencil are my first love, amongst other traditional tools, it would be nice to get ideas so that I could remain on these without falling foul of expensive tablets.

KeresaLea In reply to Spirit-In-The-Wind [2009-02-24 19:13:19 +0000 UTC]
You will never regret having gotten a tablet. I feared the cost too, but I've never ever regretted spending the money and getting what I wanted done.
You can still do pen and pencil work, and then clean it all up in the program after. I do.

how about one of those DVD workshops (i think ive wrote that somewhere before). But I really think a workshop like gnomon or massive black on DVD would be awesome.
I remember that when I met Jim Lee for the first time and watched him drawing one of his super- duper-killer-con-sketches he does when hes in the mood, how much it improved my own approach on art. The way he sketched out the forms, even the way he held the pencil everything helped me so much on improving my own skills.
I hope to see you and Travis Charest doing one of these DVDs someday
Regards from cold old Germany,
Sedat

Have you seen the Digital Art Tutorials CDs ( [link] )? I got three of them and have found them quite useful for some styles of coloring. Plus there's a couple free tutorials on the site (one of which I bought... ha ha)
PS - I'm not a representative of the company, just a big fan, and if this plug breaches any etiquette, go ahead and delete my comment.
