Description A while back, Dean Trippe had a blog meme where people were redesigning costumes for Stephanie Brown, AKA Spoiler and for a brief time Robin. She's a tragic character, not just in her fate but in how DC handled her. I won't go on forever on the subject, but you can read more about it here:
[link]

This is the submission my wife and I concocted. I drew it and she colored it. What a team! We weren't selected by Dean or his cohorts for inclusion on the Project Rooftop site, but we're still proud of the work we did. You can read the whole description of how and why we came up with our design on our blog: [link]

I did a quick color-doodle of the costume for Comfort to reference. Here it is:

This is such a cool design. I love love love the colors. It's a sensible design with some nice fashion and fun.

I was wondering if if you minded if I used this as a reference pic for online Role Playing. I actually RP Stephanie's daughter and so wanted something different than the original Spoiler design. If this isn't alright, I'll take it down and use a different picture, but I just loved the art and thought it was fantastic. The online profile for her is here [link] !/NewSpoiler Again, let me know. Thank you!

By all means go ahead. I don't mind at all.

Too true. That's why I like Marvel slightly more then DC. But I think happy long-term relationships are interesting, personally. As stated, I'd love to see Hal and Carol together (though given Hal's track record, I'm not so sure, but hey, Han's a scoundrel, and he got Leia, so...) But the thing about relationships is if they're written well, and I care about the characters, then I don't usually mind them not being married. The problem is, there are some poor saps who are either bad luck (Peter, Bruce, Matt, and Kyle all have downright horrible track-records with women) or can't EVER get any love (Jason Todd and Cassandra Cain) Hey now. That would be an interesting one...

Spider-Bat700 [2010-08-03 20:59:56 +0000 UTC]

Agreed. I've actually noticed that the ONLY TWO COUPLES WHO HAVE BEEN ABLE TO STAY TOGETHER are Reed and Sue and Clark and Lois. Why is it that these two couples seem to be the ONLY PEOPLE IN THEIR UNIVERSES who can make it work? I mean yeah, Spider-Man and Mary Jane, but A: it's usually a boring as hell relationship (Felicia's WAY cooler) and B: It recently ended. Let's take a look at the other "long-term" ones, shall we?

Scott and Jean: Married for a short while. Ended.

Hal and Carol: I push for this one everyday, but I'm not getting my hopes up.

Ollie and Dinah: OK, this is one, but how long ago did they get married?

Hawkeye and Mockingbird: Ended. Only recently got back together.

Bruce and Selina: DC would be more likely to kill off Bruce forever and replace him with Dick, Tim, Damien and/or or Terry then they would be to give him a happy ending.

The Hawks: This one's a so-so. On one hand, they stay together forever. On the other hand, they always die just as their about to admit their love for eachother.

Kyle and Soranik Natu: Give it time, she'll die like all of Kyle's girlfriends do.

Dick and Barbara: DC seems to mindlessly love this one, so who knows? We might get lucky.

Tim and Stephanie: I already talked about this one.

I think I've proven my point.

Yeah, nobody thinks a stable, happy relationship is interesting to read about. It's part of what makes comics more of a soap-opera than genuine drama. It's all over-acted and silly instead of reflective of real experience.

...Yes, I know people can't fly or lift cars in real life, but the more a character's life and personality and relationships reflect real-world people, the more believable the whole thing becomes. THAT is how you make me believe a man can fly - by making me believe he's a real guy that HAPPENS to have super powers.

Spider-Bat700 [2010-07-28 02:12:10 +0000 UTC]

I've always liked Stephanie well enough. Personally, I'm not against dark stories, but the way they killed her was disgusting. I guess you could argue it's to show how damn evil Black Mask is, but do we really have to have it that sexually explicit and gory? Just saying. Well, at least she's back. And pretty badass too. Tim was an ass-hole to her though. I mean, his on and off girlfriend comes back after being brutally tortured to death and HE KICKS HER IN THE STOMACH. I like Tim, but man was he a jerk.

AdamWithers In reply to Spider-Bat700 [2010-08-03 04:11:19 +0000 UTC]

It's just bad writing. Comic writers are generally terrified of characters being in stable, happy long-term relationships, and so will sometimes go to stupid lengths to avoid letting a couple be happy together.

And, like this, it sometimes results in one character acting uncharacteristically mean or stupid just to keep them in "will they/won't they" status.

I'm such a huge fan of Stephanie Brown, I just love her! Great take on her Spoiler outfit, though, I love the little details you put in, like the Robin-influenced belt. Your wife is very talented at coloring too; you guys make such a neat team.

Thanks so much! We love working together, and our styles really mesh well. For Steph, I wanted to do something that was a mixture of her time as Spoiler and Robin. Glad you caught the influences and liked them!

Not sure why, but I never really noticed this before, Great take on the character and taking several of her roles and making turning them into one solid design!

AdamWithers In reply to nukesimek [2010-06-22 15:42:53 +0000 UTC]

Thanks. I always loved this character, even though she's had a couple really bad costumes - the worst being her current Batgirl look. I wish they'd just put her in the Alex Ross all-black/gold Batgirl uniform, then made the black just slightly purple. But then, I'm a fan of simple, sleek costumes.

Thank you. I wanted it to be super heroey but still fun; dark but still kind of girly. I still like this direction better than the somewhat silly Batgirl costume she's wearing now.

I'm so happy she's still alive

AdamWithers In reply to nightpupgirl [2008-07-21 18:06:34 +0000 UTC]

I sort of am, too. Still can't escape the feeling that they did it just to shut up the Steph fans. Rather than admitting their mistake or (God forbid) give the girl a case in the batcave, they bring her back to life.

"Look, Spoiler fans! She isn't dead for some reason that doesn't make a ton of sense! Now stop complaining and shut up about it! Oh, and if you could please forget everything relating to her death and how we handled that, we'd appreciate it..."

I really, really like this. I think you really nailed it here. I love how she's just so free, happy and Steph-like, and I love those shoes you gave her! Oh, and also I give you major points for keeping her fun looking and not over-sexualizing her or anything. I really, really hate it when some people sexualize teenage characters too much. Or any female characters. Women/girls in comics can be sexy and good looking, that's fine, but they aren't porn stars, goddamnit.

So, yeah. You did a lovely job with tihs and thanks for making things right with the world.

AdamWithers In reply to xx-memory [2008-01-20 19:11:13 +0000 UTC]

Thanks. I always loved Stephanie, and losing her was really frustrating for me. As for the over-sexualization; on some characters it works. I don't see Power Girl as the type of woman to 'dress down' to make other people more comfortable with her. At the same time, not every girl is Power Girl, and should be treated accordingly. If you think of the characters as real people, figure out how they feel and think about themselves and their appearance, then dress them accordingly, you'll have a much more rounded looking world.

This is a great piece! I really loved the Spoiler, but had lost track of the character. I had no idea the travisty that had befallen her. It makes me very sad, to know that Batman doesn't even aknowlegde the fact that she served as Robin, if even for a brief period.

Stephanie Brown, we salute you!

PyroTwilight [2007-12-24 03:40:15 +0000 UTC]

Heh, I like the outfit but I think she kinda needs the whole black cowl head cover thing. Otherwise every villain she fight's will be "Hey, isn't that that two bit Cluemaster's daughter? Hey, it is! Don't they live right down there?" Etc... but I do like the design itself.

I'm not sure if it's the pose or what but she reminds me of the Trickster there.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AdamWithers In reply to PyroTwilight [2007-12-24 16:06:10 +0000 UTC]

I guess that depends on how many people would ever know that Cluemaster HAS a daughter, precisely what she looks like, and can figure it out past the mask. I mean, if nobody who knows Tim Drake can figure out he's Robin past that mask, then the couple guys who even know who Cluemaster is, let alone that he has a daughter, shouldn't be a problem.

Mostly, I just don't like the total head-covering masks. I find them dehumanizing and think they make heroes look like villains.
