Description
Two quick feline anatomy tutorials I stuck together. These two things are probably the most common anatomical mistakes I see in cat drawings o__o; Especially the chest.
Like honestly... Cats shouldn't be drawn like dogs (or plastic toys). Cats and dogs are built for two completely different hunting styles. And being a cartoonist or really "stylized" isn't an excuse for fucking anatomy up. So stop it, just stop it
Anyways, I hope it helps out at least a few people, so enjoy

So, may I mention that when people put a ribcage in on a cat that it makes them look too much like a lion or way too burly? I just wanted to add that...
But if people aren't drawing "cats", but a fantasy animal or actually WANT to stylize their art, that is their choice.
So.... yeah. Another anatomy fudge up I see constantly is feline faces.
What are your thoughts??
I found this helpful, so thank you for posting this! It would be awesome to see another.

I agree it makes them really burly, but lions are built with the no-ribcage-upfront just like little cats.
Yeah, but they're usually not doing it with intention, but because they don't know better (but if someone wanted to do a cat-like critter with a dog chest, then I wouldn't stop them, I'd just hope they were aware of a real cat's anatomy)
My thoughts? xD hm I dunno, I think cat faces can be drawn a lot of ways, but people really shouldn't structure them as a "dog face with a smaller muzzle" because then the doggy-feel remains obvious. A person definitely needs to remind themselves that kitties have their own subtle characteristics that make them truly feline, so working with dog (or any other animal) fundamentals is going to be a bad choice in building blocks. A person should look at a kitty and say "what makes a kitty a kitty?" Everyone sees different things in kitties and that'll make their kitties unique, but still all carry that kitty-feel. (I personally try to bring focus to their big eyes).
Thank you for enjoying it c:

no problem lol. The chest thing- they often give cats wide chests in games and it always looks stupid. I hope that they read this.

Yes! Exactly. I hope to be a game artist that makes non-mutilated looking animals (the realistic ones anyway, I love to invent creatures) So I will keep this as part of my mission statement: I will make animals with proper anatomy IN MIND!

This is a great tutorial. I used to look all around for a good tutorial that explained anatomy, as opposed to show how to draw a cat in one specific position. Great job.

Do you have any references of how they would look from a front view? I am so very glad I found this tutorial because I would have forever been messing up on the chest haha

I don't have any drawings but here's some different cats from the front:
Big cats: [link] [link]
Small cats: [link] [link]
If those aren't good enough pictures then I'd suggest looking up photographic references from breeds like Bengals, siamese and sphinx. They just happen to be my favorites for reference xD

Thank you so much! I was thoroughly confused about the chest region. Some photographs give the illusion of a chest, and I had no idea which one to trust. Now I am sure.

I am going to make my new fursona a deer and there are not many deer tutorials out there that are helpful. It would be exciting to see a deer in your comics.

AddictionHalfWay In reply to Fawnir [2010-11-01 03:27:43 +0000 UTC]
Epic Yeah, and a lot of deer tutorials out there tend to focus on only one gender of the deer but the two genders are pretty different. They both have different head shapes and the males just look so beefed up and the females are pretty thin looking. A lot of people kind of believe that both genders are in the middle and that the only difference is size and that "boys got the antlers".
Yes, it'll be a little bit before they appear but they're going to be very exciting to bring into the story
