Description
According to the Wiktionary:
edgy (comparative edgier , superlative edgiest )
I only took the most relevant definitions. Sonic was always meant to be a challenger to Mario, even at the beginning of his inception. Heck, Yuji Naka imagined the core of Sonic's gameplay by speedrunning the first Mario game, and Green Hill Zone as a speedrun of World 1-1. Sonic was always meant to be this allegory of coolness, attitude, he oozes radicalness. He challenged all of the video game industry back then. People will claim "Ow the Edge" how many times they want, so why not embrace it? Edginess is just pushing the boundaries, it's unsettling, it's cool, it's sharp. Sure, when you mention anthropomorphic animals, people often see the likes of Hamtaro, Doreamon, Looney Tunes, Disney or the Tex Avery shows, with slapstick, childish humor, bright colors, but also, well, uniformization of entertainment. Yet on the other hand, me I see the likes of Sonic during the 90's and early 2000's, Sly Cooper, Ratchett and Clank, Jak and Daxter, Crash Bandicoot (to a degree). What do they have in common? They all have story. Sonic is a rebellious teen who fights an evil, industrialist scientist to avoid his friends and his habitat to be ruined, and later to protect civilians from said scientist. Sly Cooper is a young thief who steals goodies for the fun of it and to protect the world from ancient magical artifacts of world destruction. Ratchett has to fight an industrialist so his home planet is not destroyed in the first game. Both Crash and Jak have been experimented on and have to fight the ones who made this to them. All of these games can be deemed as edgy, yet the Nintendrones only take jabs at Sonic so it stays in the kiddy pool. Why? Probably cause they want their Lord and Savior the Big N to buy outright Sega? Cause it's only Sonic who gets this definition of edgy:
4. (Internet slang ) Exhibiting behavior that is disconcerting or alarming, sometimes in an effort to impress or to troll others.

They really sold the most? Prove it! Show me the actual sales figures so that I know you're not just talking out your ass.

And yet, Sonic 3 and Knuckles, the one with the least dark story and one of your so-called "Classics" is highest on that chart. Also your little thing about why Forces was so low on that chart sounds like you're just in denial and damage controlling.

Yeah, but 3&K didn't shoehorn in a bunch of pointless edgelord nonsense like those other ones that sold even less did. The fact that the others kept losing sales means the series was in a state of decline ever since 3&K, which is saying something.

Those games didn't sell the most because it had dark stories, they sold the most because the actual gameplay and other qualities of the game were either good or the game just really popular.
Also, Heroes did not have a dark story, that's just inaccurate.
Sonic was always meant to be radical and cool, but not over the top edgy and borderline cringe like the stuff in 06 and Shadow the Hedgehog.
There's a difference between cool, and just edgy...

People enjoyed the stories sure, and they loved the stories of the adventure era, but that doesn't mean that's why those games sold so well, I'm not saying the music made the game popular either, that would be contradicting myself.
Taking over the world or wanting to enslave all organic beings isn't a dark story since Eggman tries to do that in every fucking game, and you know damn well ''every fucking game'' isn't dark. And it never said hew anted to kill his creator, even if there were indications of that, and even then, you admitted this yourself, it doesn't take up enough of the stories plot to make the story sound dark, like, I'd say those lasts parts of Heroes were only 5% of the overall story, it's just the climax, that's all.
And why did you get triggered over the fact I mentioned the word edgy, I'm not a moron, what Sonic has been doing was radical and cool, likw I said, he wasn't being the aggressive or a try hard.
I never played Undertale to understand what you're talking about there.
06 went for an overall aggressive tone that the last two adventure games didn't have, it's graphics were more like reality and less cartoony.
And before you say ''Sonic's always been edgy and realistic like that'' he hasn't, in the adventure games the humans and visuals looked cartoony, but not too carttoony, on top of that, Heroes was the embodiement of cartoony and playful.
You also have to realize that the edge you claim that exist in Sonic only ever existed in like two games in total, O6 anf STH, most of the games in the series had serious elements, but the plot of those said games didn't have enough of those elements to make it borderline edgy.

Can I mention some other times that Anthropomorphic Animals were serious?
-Rocket Raccoon (Guardians of the Galaxy): An Anthro Animal who teams up with a space outlaw and is friends with a mutant plant monster, and goes to fight galactic bandits, a living planet, and even against freakin Thanos!
-The Ninja Turtles: Four Anthropomorphic Animals (and their anthro animal Mentor/Surrogate Father, Splinter), getting involved in really serious scenarios and fighting a genocidal samurai and his ninja minions, a bunch of formerly human body horror monstrosities, a race of destructive Brain-Like Aliens, Cthulhu, and so much more! Mostly in the 2003, 2012, and IDW Comics Series mainly.
-Fox McCloud and Team Star Fox: A Team of Anthro Animals whose leader had his father die horribly after one of their kind turned on them, then he fights in a Space War against a crazed Weapon Scientist who was exiled from their world, a Dinosaur Planet, a race of Biomechanical Parasitic Insects, and much more!
-Red (Solatorobo): An anthro animal who pilots a super cool mecha and goes on journeys to fight destructive mech pilots and learn the secrets of his ancient land.
-The Swat Kats: Two Anthro Animals who pilot transforming vehicles and fight terrorists and hideous and serious body horror monstrosities and more.
-Winston and Hammond (Overwatch): Two Anthro Animals who fight terrorist organizations and sentient robots, one who is a scientist who creates energy shields and his own power suits. The other who wrecks stuff with a Droideka-like Mecha with shields and a Sphere Mode.
-Bobo (Generator Rex): An Anthro Animal with a serious attitude who helps Rex face against a bunch of hideous Biomechanical Creatures who were once human till they got corrupted by the same thing giving Rex his powers. And Bobo is the one with the guns and the attitude assisting Rex in this.
-The Knight (Hollow Knight): An Anthro Insect Warrior fighting to stop an infection plaguing his kind, traversing through depressing and desolate-looking lands, facing hideous monstrosities, and more.
-The Penguin (A Penguin's Memory): An Anthro Animal who is very colorful shown fighting in a Vietnam-like war, then when he gets home with a purple heart, suffering PTSD and trying to get his life back in order in a very serious and sad story.
-Mickey Goofy and Donald (Kingdom Hearts): As opposed to their regular counterparts, these guys help a warrior of legend fight formerly-human corrupted surreal monsters who are invading worlds, Goofy bringing the defense, Donald bringing the Spells, and Mickey helping on his own accord, even once donning an Organization XIII jacket (which is enchanted to protect one from the Corridors of Darkness's corruption) and infiltrating their ranks.
-Mrs Brisby and the Rats of NIMH (Secret of NIMH): A bunch of anthro animals being imprisoned and tortured by a mad scientist and then plot their escape, then go into in-fighting against each other and experiencing loss. Also one who is like a head priest to them dies violently.
-Little-Foot and the Dinosaurs (Land Before Time): An Anthro Dinosaur who witnesses his own mother die when she bravely went to save him from a Predator, then being forced to go on his own to find a new land of refuge after the divide, and later him and his friends having to face that said Predator once more.
Those are more examples of Badass and serious Talking Animals who are not like Hamtaro, Looney Toons, and what not, and what Sonic can be like too!
Also Nintendo buying out SEGA will definitely not be a good thing. Knowing them, they'll try to make Sonic become Lost World 2 and try to add in all their "innovative" but terrible experimental controls to try and ruin it more.

Nintendo fans generally don’t want to care about the others like they want to care about Sonic (and Crash+Spyro).

God thank you I've been saying this for a while but people don't get that Nintendo would probably polish the games better but in terms of content it would just be more of the same on steroids. Mario games for example have crazy amount of polish to create a solid experience but the series' simplicity is what sales it. Sonic seems like it would clash with how they make games and how they view their characters because Sonic has a lot of potential built around it that is incredibly mishandled and underutilized.

Some people would rather give an entirety just for a little piece of heaven.
Instead of opting to change Sega's infrastructure (something that would actually work out with competent owners) they'd rather see properties like Sonic move to a different home not understanding that these companies may not even have "you" in their best interest. Just looking at Sonic and the amount of changes they would make is enough to or at least should be enough to scare off anyone wanting this idea considering how well Nintendo treats their properties but also demanding. We will for sure get a Sonic game like I stated that will be well polished but an entirely different machine that still has some of the Sonic feel in there.

I agree, people who think that don't know what Nintendo has done to their own franchise and how many fan projects, have been taken down just to protect their so-called " IP ", heck it doesn't even look like they care enough to save Mario and Luigi, so why would people think selling Sonic to Nintendo would make things better? it would make it so much worse than it actually is.
