A response toI don't think the avatar fits in Sonic Forces. You might know by now how I feel about that. But after some thought, I think I came up with the best idea to have custom characters in a Sonic game.
1. First of all, it shan't be a main title. Yes, it's easy to say it must be in a spin-off, but I think a game with Sonic OCs should be its own thing and not be part of the main canon. Speaking of canon...
2. It should take place either in the SatAM/pre-reboot Archie universe, or in a similar setting (Eggman ruling over the world, the Resistance, etc.) Yes, it's pretty much turning Forces non canon while putting the main cast away.
3. There must be no Wispon, more species, etc. To put it in a nutshell, just read my How to fix: Sonic Forces rant about the custom hero, it'd be easier.
4. It should be an action MMORPG. Make it fully multiplayer, add the possibility to fight in the Eggman Empire side, you know the deal. A huge world, many species available, each with their own unique abilities, with some post-apocalyptic/cyberpunk/resistance setting (which would be quite innovative for the MMO industry). You have the key to success, if you want my opinion.
I'm sure there's place for the custom hero within the Sonic universe, but not as it is now. Sega should have thought about that, but Iizuka being Iizuka, I'm sure he didn't think about making a spin-off all about custom characters

Well, I'm currently working on several projects, one of which (probably the main one) I want to show Sega in order to get published by them and hopelfully get in charge of a Sonic game I'm also working on (probably the most ambitious yet but I don't want to say much about it now)

1 and 2.) Why can't it be in a main series title? If anything, multiple gameplay styles actually help the boost games much more than the adventure games since the boost is flawed from a development viewpoint, as said by SuperMarioT on youtube. Plus, it's something more new to Sonic, yet it plays similar enough to Modern Sonic only there's no boost. Hell, it's actually pretty cool to see these supposed civilians actually help Sonic and co. fight Dr. Eggman for once in a game.
3.) Okay, two things. First: You do realize that the Wispons also act as weapons, hence the name, and don't just act as Mario-like powerups. Plus, there's a lot of Wisp powers out there which helps to bump up the variety a bit in both customization and level design. The Burst Wisp is easily the best example of this as you obtain infinite jumps, letting you get up to higher routes while also acting like a flamethrower to enemies, which looks like it has decent range. Without the Wispons, the custom character would look far less interesting with the grappling hook alone. It's called versatility. Secondly: Could you tell us why there should be no Wispons here as a brief summary? A link maybe? Just because you explained something at an earlier point in time doesn't mean you should tell your viewers to go look for an older post, because that's just plain lazier than Sega as you supposedly claim.
4.) An MMORPG? I don't know about that to be honest. I personally would lean towards something akin to the Uncharted games mixed with some Sonic elements, or vice versa. A lot of those set pieces in the UC games weren't just visual flair and as means to tell a story, but they actually contributed to the level design in a way that's both interesting to watch and enjoyable to play (Like the Tank from 2, the burning chateau from 3, or the Madagascar chase from 4). Plus, a lot of those set pieces were pretty fucking ridiculous for a game that aims to be more realistic anyway, so why not let Sonic give it a shot. It doesn't have to be a one to one translation, but it can hold a similar concept. Though that's really just my opinion.
But considering you being you along with your goal to prove Sega on what a "Real" Sonic game is, I'm sure that you don't have a clue about actual game development. Sorry bud.

1) & 2) "Why can't it be in a main series title?"
It can't be a main series title as, as proven by Forces, it's really hard for a create a character functionality to be implemented in a main game. For Forces, all of what they do just seem to have been put in a blender without thinking if the overall tasted good or not.
"If anything, multiple gameplay styles actually help the boost games much more than the adventure games since the boost is flawed from a development viewpoint, as said by SuperMarioT on youtube."
Sure, but still, multiple play styles doesn't help at all since Sonic looks like he plays awfully yet once again. I watched the video from SMT, and while I agree on many things he said, I still don't think multiple play styles work for that, it worked way better for the Adventure games cause, though the games had flaws back in the game, the styles from SA1 (except Big's one) complemented each other and made an overall cool experience. Here, it looks automated, uncool and just not fun at all (at least in my opinion). Though if we take only the Boost formula (something I'm not fond of as you should have understood by now) if you take a look at the modding scene for Generations, you'll see talented people managed to make Tails and Knuckles and a bunch of the other characters within the Boost formula, so why a CaC function where many people shown how Sega could handle the other characters from the main cast?
"Plus, it's something more new to Sonic, yet it plays similar enough to Modern Sonic only there's no boost."
With a grappling hook that feels automated as one of the admins from Sonic Stadium said here , the constant 2D sections (heck, even Green Hill for the Avatar is entirely 2D), the boss being just a Sonic Dash boss, and the controls of Modern Sonic being bugging me, I don't like it. Plus, it's slow as heck, there's no real homing attack, and etc.
"Hell, it's actually pretty cool to see these supposed civilians actually help Sonic and co. fight Dr. Eggman for once in a game."
I have to agree the concept is kinda cool, but people are more invested in the main cast rather than the custom hero. In many comments on Youtube you can see peeps asking what is gonna be Tails' purpose, cheering about Knuckles being the leader of the Resistance, or even being happy about the return of the Chaotix. The only time I saw something about the Avatar was in a comment speaking primarily about Knuckles. I might have missed some ones, but many were not invested in the idea at first, and it's still polarizing.
So yeah, since the idea polarizes so much, the best thing to do would have been to make a spin-off as a testing ground at first rather than being in a main game.
3) Yes, I know Wispons are just like weapons fueled by the Wisps and they don't act like your typical Mario powerup. Though the Wisps don't have their place in a main game anymore: they were already awkward in Lost World, and at the end of Colors Wii (not counting the DS version since it seems Sega doesn't count it as part of the main canon), Yacker says the Wisps all return to Home World, so there's no way some of them stayed on Earth/Mobius since then. For your second point, I agree, I was kinda lazy not to send a link to my rant, mostly cause I don't have a Core account so I wasn't able to show it as I wanted to at first; Here, take a look. I'll even quote the relevant parts so you don't have to read it, but that's gonna take pretty long.
Variety & Character Design: character creation process
One of my biggest issues with the custom hero. If you wanna have a custom character in your story, you have to make sure you have enough to present to your audience to make them happy. Iizuka stated in an interview Sonic Team added the custom character in the game to please fans begging for their own OCs to be in the game. But if you look deeply into the Sonic OC community, you’ll realize that there are more than 7 species out there, and every single OC has their unique abilities. It’s not just based on the species or what not, the characters had creative powers. And design wise, a huge part of them are really awesome (though I’m not taking the countless recolors that make the OC community seem cancerous).
That’s why this chapter will be divided in 4 sections: Species, Powers, Species design and Character design.
Species
As I’ve said, there is clearly a serious lack of species choice. Look at games like The Elder Scrolls or other RPGs. I know Sonic isn’t an RPG, but if you make a CaC functionality in a world of many colorful animals, then you should use RPGs as a reference. 7 species is not enough. Here’s a list of what I’d do if I were to choose the species you could play as.
- Cat
- Rabbit
- Bear
- Bird
- Wolf
- Frog
- Salamander
- Armadillo
- Flying Squirrel
- Wasp
- Fox
- Monkey
- Mole
- Crab
See? I have 14 species, twice more than what we actually have. 2 species from the actual game have been replaced to allow a bit more creativity and diversity to the game. Is that overkill? I don’t think so. I mean, the game has been in development for 4 years now, and the gameplay for Modern Sonic and Classic Sonic are mostly the same, so the rest should have been gone onto thinking of the species for the customization, right? And although I personally think the game has been designed with Boom Sonic in mind, maybe the custom hero was on the table since day 1, who knows?
So that makes 14 species. I replaced the dog and the hedgehog due to me not wanting to have a mere Sonic recolor as the avatar and I just have no idea of a power to give the dog… And I know there are pretty much none of these species in the OC community, but I thought about them on a gameplay standpoint, which brings me to the next section:
Powers
In my mind, powers should go in 2 categories: species power and custom power. I think the powers that have been presented for the custom hero are just meh, and don’t quite fit the species. The only one I think fits well is the Bear power; aside from that, that’s really meh: why is the bird only able to double jump and not actually fly? Why has the wolf the same power as the electric shield? And these 2 are just examples of my blown mind when I saw the actual list. For me, the powers should fit the species really well, but looking at what the OC community came with, I think there’s also room to have one passive power you can pick at the creation of your character but you wouldn’t be able to change it throughout the game, pretty much like what we have here but better.
For the custom powers, I simply have no idea of what else could be added to what the current list adds. More invincibility frames, keeping one ring after being hit once (but if you’re hit a second time you lose it, else it would be OP), getting rings after dying to have a little boost at the beginning, that’s okay, IMO. Maybe could we add several powers like the Stomp, the Homing Attack, the Spindash/Drop Dash or heck, even flying could be cool! But if your species power is on the list too, you wouldn’t be able to pick it as your custom power cause duh. But I can’t make a proper list ATM, so look out for an update of this once I can get my head at that.
For the species powers, that’s much simpler for me since I came up with the species list with the species powers in mind.
- Cat: Gets a second chance after being hit with no rings: after being hit with 0 Rings as a Cat character, you’re not K.O.ed instantly, but you can continue until you’re hit a second time with 0 Rings; this move is inspired by the 9 lives of the cat. A Cat character also has the Stomp, since the cat always falls on its paws.
- Rabbit: A Rabbit character can both long jump and double jump for, well, obvious reasons. Is also slightly faster than the rest of them (Yes, like Super Meat Boy with the double jump too)
- Bear: pretty much like what we actually have for Forces, the Bear could have a Fury Rush to attack directly the closest enemy on screen if you can reach it. The Bear character also deals higher damage to the enemies since I’d like to have a combat system kinda like Sonic 06 and Sonic Heroes.
- Bird: The Bird character could fly but with a stamina bar that empties with the time, kinda like when Tails flies but much longer. It would also have a Drop Attack kinda like the Stomp but it would also throw the target enemy on his fellow Badniks to destroy them too.
- Wolf: The Wolf character would naturally be tougher than the rest of them (except Knuckles), by losing less rings after being hit. It would also have a Quick Attack to destroy multiple enemies in the blink of an eye.
- Frog: The Frog character could use its tongue as a grappling hook/lasso/whip to either attack enemies or for movement purpose (it would be the only character with the grappling hook). It would also be able to climb up walls.
- Salamander: The Salamander character can climb up walls since it’s a lizard. It would also be able to spit fire balls at enemies, bringing the shooting mechanics from SA1 and SA2 back.
- Armadillo: could curl into a ball and turn invincible while rolled; while in Ball form, the Armadillo can’t move nor attack, but it’s perfect to strategize before battle. It would also have the Spindash.
- Flying Squirrel: Can glide for a certain amount of time. Would also throw projectiles (darts, bolts, nuts, I dunno, but projectiles). The two combined would make a gameplay similar to Space Harrier and After Burner, with a bit of NiGHTs here and there.
- Wasp: Can fly infinitely. Would also have the homing attack both in mid-air and on the ground (like Charmy Bee’s Sting Attack, but here you can target your enemy). Would lose more rings after being hit due to its weak nature.
- Fox: The Fox character would have a Witch Time kind of power, making it able to have a short bullet time to avoid damage; it comes from the Fox being a slick animal. Would also be able to detect secret areas and pathways; it comes from the popular thought of the Fox being a Master of Lies, and from the Norse mythos where the Fox is affiliated to Loki, the God of Lie and Mischief.
- Monkey: The Monkey character can use the terrain to its advantage both for movement and combat; in fact, it would be something like the Runner’s Vision from Mirror’s Edge to show it the different paths it could use or where to go to attack the enemy on its weak points; that also enables the parkour for him. It would also deal higher damage.
- Mole: The Mole character can dig underground, making it able both to avoid combat or to sneak attack the enemies from below. It would also be able to detect secret areas.
- Crab: Probably the weirdest of them all. The Crab character would be able to breathe under water, so you won’t hear the Sound of Fear while playing it. It would also be able to climb up walls using its hand claws.
See? It’s not that hard to find interesting powers for every species, and even more. The powers here feel natural for every species, IMO. You just need to have a little culture or knowledge to create interesting powers that don’t feel forced or just being straight copies of past gameplay from older Sonic games. Yes, it’s heavily inspired by other franchises, like Mirror’s Edge, Space Harrier or After Burner, but it’s just these powers just can either fit Sonic pretty well (the Mirror’s Edge case, which is what fans requested for Lost Mind but they got that pathetic parkour system) or are just good nostalgic throwbacks (since Space Harrier, After Burner and NiGHTs all didn’t have many games these past 10 years). I also tried not to make the species too OP’d, and I think I have a good balance between every species (but if you think otherwise, you can tell me in the comments section, I’d be happy to debate). Also, as you might have noticed, several species share the same powers, like the Frog, the Salamander and the Crab all being able to climb up walls or the Fox and the Mole being able to detect secret areas and pathways; it’s just that I felt it made sense for these species to have that. But weirdly enough, the 14 species are not the only ones I’m planning in this improvement. In fact, that brings me to the next section:
Species design
Yeah, 14 species is good, but what if you don’t exactly find the one you really wanted? Welp, I thought some species I covered here could share the exact same powers with other species. Yup, I’m just saying the game would have a huge amount of species, not just the 14 ones from above. In this list I’ll show you which species you could swap from a different one at the character creation.
- Cat: Lynx, Fennec
- Rabbit: Mouse, Hare, Pica, etc.
- Bear: Grizzly, Polar Bear, Walrus
- Bird: Hawk, Eagle, Falcon, Sparrow, etc.
- Wolf: Lion, Tiger, Cheetah
- Frog: Toad, Gecko
- Salamander: Squirrel, Lizard
- Armadillo: Hedgehog, Porcupine
- Flying Squirrel: Bat
- Wasp: Bee, Hornet, etc.
- Fox: Ferret, Stoat, Weasel, etc.
- Monkey: Gorilla, Chimpanzee
- Mole: Badger, Raccoon, etc.
- Crab: Lobster, Crayfish, Shrimp, Crocodile
In fact, this isn’t an exhaustive list, it’s just many, many things I came up with but I’m pretty sure many others can fit in the list as well. But with that, that pretty much covers a majority of the species people can come up with –well, except for fishes, and I know we can add them, but I didn’t want to due to having to think about powers both for sharks, dolphins, regular fisher, oysters and etc., which would probably made the number jump to 25 species, which would have been overkill.I wanted to be short, but you gave me no choice. Now if you read this quote so far, you'd know how I made it, Wispons are unnecessary and that would make the whole "civilian turned hero" thing way more interesting. As I said on many private discussions, I'm all open for weapons in the Sonic games, but the Wisps no longer have their place in Sonic.
4. Never played Uncharted, so I dunno. But having the game being an MMORPG would explain online features more than just online leaderboard.
"But considering you being you along with your goal to prove Sega on what a "Real" Sonic game is, I'm sure that you don't have a clue about actual game development. Sorry bud. "
As you don't know anything about me, I'll let it slip. But I'm actually involved in 5 video game projects, 3 series projects, and I have plans for more in the future. I'm game designer on 3 of these 5 game projects, and only either a mere 3D modeler or coder on the other 2. So yeah, I know quite a bit about game development, even as an indie dev.

First off, have you even played a demo of Forces? Because it seems like you're jumping on the bandwagon. Sonic controls differently because it's not an adventure-esc game, to begin with. I understand that multiple characters should return and all that, and Shadow gameplay wise (Ignoring level design), shows itself as an experiment. The reason why other gameplay styles didn't work all that much because they were just there to make the game longer. In SA1, Amy, Big, and Gamma were just there as a means to have a sub-plot. None of them (Except for Big to an extent) had not much significance to the main story. In SA2, Tails is the most guilty of this since he wasn't going to be playable in that game, to begin with, shoe-horning him in the process. You say the custom character doesn't look fun? Amy in SA1 was a bit clunky, Big was... just no, treasure hunting in SA2 was butchered thanks to the gimped radar, and Tail's levels are poorly designed along with clunky movement. I'm sure the custom character will play SOME role in Forces that won't overshadow the main cast.
Secondly, The Wispons do matter for the custom character because like you said, the grappling hook alone would make the gameplay style more boring and automated. It's explained in Sonic Runners that some of the Wisps just stayed on Sonic's home planet simply because they like it there and they want to help Sonic and co. in the future. Besides, they're strictly on the custom character, they double as power-ups and weapons just to help compliment the level design, and at the very least they don't have a track of their own to interrupt the level music. While you have decent ideas, this also leads to another issue, Programming Nightmare. Ignoring the current state of Sega and Sonic Team, if they were to actually do all that, everyone will eventually lose steam and most likely become overworked for the sake of fine-tuning everything. Plus, you have deadlines to meet which would most likely add to the stress. Clement mentioned that in his Sonic 06 review, and considering that I plan on working in the game development field, I actually agree with him. Even though Sega is a company, those people within have families and homes too.
With that said, when I say that you have no clue about game development, I'm referring to actual game development from a (not indie) but a legitimate company like Sega. Just because you know a thing or two about programming doesn't mean everyone will agree with you on your ideas. Why do you think your rant on the Sonic Forces: Shadow the Hedgehog DLC got so much controversy? Because of your pretentious goal to show everyone what a "Real" Sonic Game is. I know I want to make my own fan game that's actually good and all that, but you have one hell of a delusion man. What you think is a "Real" game is in actuality, a game based on your personal preference, and that is just as fucking selfish and egotistical as "fans" wanting Sonic Forces to fail because it's not what they want.
It's not about what you have, it's what you do with it.

The possibility of being in the vilain side ? Hey but here is an interesting idea.
It would be very interesting to be able to choose the camp in which you want to be at the beginning of the game or to be able to change sides depending on your decisions and actions in the game. This would develop several different scenarios rather than having only one.
Of course this is rather complicated with a character like Sonic especially if the game is canon but with the CC which are supposed to represent us this is perfectly possible. After all, who has never wanted to give Sonic a lesson to make him lose the urge to make jokes ?

Yeah and that would justify the sentences "join the resistance" and "join the uprising" in the trailers.
I understand you, since Unleashed I find that SEGA and Sonic Team do not attempt anything extraordinary or innovative for the games when the scenario .... I do not even see what justifies that Sonic is the main hero as d other characters can take his place, that the scenario does not turn around him and I even go so far as to say that nobody is interested in him.
Just look at Forces, fans are more interested in Infinite, Silver, Knuckles, Shadow, CC and even by the absence of Blaze than by Sonic

Yeah it's rather ironic that "Sonic only Sonic" is not a good thing for Sonic. After you had to expect it because when you look good if you take away Sonic his role of hero that it remains to him? Nothing, but absolutely nothing.
At least the other characters have a role, an influence on others and a personality even Amy, Big and Cream. Sonic has nothing for him and SEGA and Sonic Team don't even hesitate to attribute to him the exploits that other characters have accomplished like the description of Blaze in Runners who says that Blaze was a shy character who became more friendly thanks to Sonic as if Cream had been useless.
And don't talk about classic Sonic that has no use in Force except nostalgia and make the connection with Mania. At least Paper Mario was of great importance in Mario and Luigi Paper Jam Bros because he could do things that neither Mario nor Luigi could do but Sonic modern and CC can do all that Sonic classic can do.

You know what? This was a well thought out response to my comment. I hate fan characters and that will never change and that's the main reason I don't like the custom character idea. But this is a dang good idea for integrating them into the games. Fine job, Advocate, fine job.
1. I mean yes. Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine was in no way a canon game and wasn't exactly a good idea for a Sonic game, but since it was a spinoff, people forgave it for most of it's failures.
2. This doesn't bother me since Forces is already flirting with those different Sonic universes to begin with. Plus, I'm not sure we need some giant edgelord adventure with explosions and a Gary Stu new villain for the start of a "Sonic Renaissance" era. So putting it in another universe would make total sense. (and if this was actually going to happen, yes leave the game canon characters out of it as much as possible o_O)
3. No, yeah, I agree. Wisps are no longer necessary, no longer fun, and from a story standpoint don't make sense to include in the game. I also agree mainly because I don't like the Wisps or Sonic Colors' story at all. XDDDD
4. That's where your idea really becomes exceptional. Everyone loves this type of game, it's very easy for anyone to get into it, plus it would just make sense with the theme of the game. The whole world is at stake, so wouldn't it make sense to have the characters have a wide expansive world to interact with and a large variety of mobians/animals to meet? This could really work, dude! ^^

1. When you say "not part of the main canon," what do you mean exactly? Are we talking Sonic Battle (canon, but not a core game) or Sonic Eraser (completely non-canon)?
2. Would something like that even be possible? Three of my favorite characters are from the original Archie universe and it would be nice to see them in a game, but I'm not sure if it's a realistic expectation.
3. More species absolutely need to happen, but I think Wispons should stay. After all, what if I want my character to use a weapon?
4. I don't know if this is a good idea. An MMO would only last for however long Sega wants to keep the servers running. Everything else sounds okay though. It reminds me of the Sonic world in Lego Dimensions, but on a bigger scale.

AdventurousAdvocate In reply to ElectroKyurem [2017-10-13 19:35:38 +0000 UTC]
1. We're talking Eraser. Though I tend to consider the games from Colors onwards as not part of the canon, but that's just my opinion. I want it to be its own thing, and as I explained, the setting I'd see for such a game would be drastically different than the regular Sonic games, so a parallel dimension like the Sol dimension.
2. Ah, if you knew my plans for the Sonic game I'm making, you'd have some surprises (hint hint)
3. Weapons are allowed, sure. Wispons, no. Take the Piko Hammer, the staff Johnny Lightfoot from the Fleetway comics wields, Sally's arm blades, etc. Weapons have their place in Sonic games. The Wisps, not anymore.
4. Well, having it like a combination of an MMO and solo game, like what Warframe does, is to me the best thing you could do for such a game

I strongly agree with this one, I mean the whole custom character concept needs room to grow without being bogged down by the main game.
"2. It should take place either in the SatAM/pre-reboot Archie universe, or in a similar setting (Eggman ruling over the world, the Resistance, etc.) Yes, it's pretty much turning Forces non canon while putting the main cast away."
that's an interesting idea, though granted I would like to see the main games take elements of the Satam/Archie universes and maybe outright reboot to include said elements but hey that's just me.
"3. There must be no Wispon, more species, etc. To put it in a nutshell, just read my How to fix: Sonic Forces rant about the custom hero, it'd be easier."
I also agree with this, I mean I would also like more variety and more interesting abilities.
"4. You have the key to success, if you want my opinion."
this is actually a cool idea, maybe have the possibility to form you own Freedom Fighter's team (like this game's version of a guild), oh and bonus points if you join Eggman's side you become a cyborg or roboticized like in the comics with the ability to rise in ranks and become an Egg Boss or something. and maybe have the ability to change sides at any moment and maybe act as a double agent and infiltrate the opposing side's ranks and take them down from the inside. you could also just be a neutral party who can oppose both sides like Fang for example or maybe ally yourself with other villains like the Dark Legion, Naugus, Battle Birds, or Mammoth Mogul or something. Really this is just such a cool idea in general and the possibilities are endless. I mean I don't even play MMO and I want to play this (well this and Sea of Thieves but what ever). Really there's just a lot you could do with the whole Satam/Archie setting.

Well, for all the ideas you gave, I thought about them, but I wanted to be the most concise and not spoil anything if I were to make such a game

Actually, I kind of agree with you on that. A spinoff that focuses on OCs saving parts of the world where Sonic doesn't frequent would be damn fine idea for a game. Like, a game that focuses on three characters where their adventures happen concurrently. The closest we have to a game where you can play as your own OCs is Sonic World...and you need to know someone good at modelling to make THAT barrel of monkeys roll correctly.
