Description
Our brains are primed to see shadows and use them to interpret objects. We subconsciously understand that when we have a directional light source like the sun, surfaces will look lighter or darker depending on what direction they're facing. That's why the most important aspect of realistic drawing is contrast between light and dark values. You can take advantage of contrast to trick the brain into interpreting a 2D drawing as a 3D shape. You create an illusion by simulating shadows and perspective.
The key to realism is contrast and texture. Contrast is a visual illusion that indicates shape. Texture comes from the surface detail, and ties into our sense of touch; it makes hair look silky and and eyes look glossy. The more senses you can confuse, the more convincingly realistic your art will be.
In my class, I do three drawings to demonstrate freehand sketching, shading and using colour pencils. I also talk about how to approach drawing long term, deal with failure and practice to improve. I give you ways to identify your weaknesses and good practice exercises so you can improve them.
I spent three months writing, filming and editing this because I wanted it to be as helpful and clear as possible.
