Freehand sketching is really useful and it's not as hard as you think. It gives you the freedom to alter your reference, combine multiple references and eventually draw from your imagination.

I have my own method of sketching that starts with identifying the key points in the reference and transferring them to the paper. Basically you start at one point and project a straight line to the rough position of another point (e.g. I start at the fork of the tree and project to the top of the trunk and branch get a V). You go back and adjust as you fill in the drawing and have more points to compare against.

In my Skillshare class, I do three drawings to demonstrate freehand sketching, shading and using colour pencils. I also talk about how to approach drawing long term, deal with failure and practice to improve. I give you ways to identify your weaknesses and good practice exercises so you can improve them.

I spent three months writing, filming and editing the class because I wanted it to be as helpful and clear as possible.
